Description

Maria is a game based on the War of the Austrian Succession, between 1740 and 1748, where Austria was attacked by Prussia, France, Bavaria and Saxony, while only Great Britain, Hanover and the Netherlands (by forming the so-called Pragmatic Army) helped her.

Maria is primarily a 3 player game. One player is Austria, the second is France plus Bavaria, while the third player plays as Prussia (Austria's enemy) and the Pragmatic Army (Austria's ally) at the same time. This is made possible by the division of the map into two parts, the Flanders map and the Bohemia map.

Maria is derived from the award-winning Friedrich: Anniversary Edition, but has its very own character, including politics, hussars, force marches, imperial election, Saxony's betrayal and Prussia's annexation of Silesia. Subtle maneuvers, seizure of fortresses, prudent retreats, and Machiavellian politics are the keys to victory. However, players must be careful: whoever uses his Tactical Cards unwisely in battle can suddenly find himself not on the highway to glory but on the road to ruin.

Maria takes you to the era of the 18th century's ruthless struggle for power. It can be played in 2 variants: the shorter, simplified introductory game or the longer but richer advanced game, with its simultaneous campaigns in Bohemia and Flanders.

Pros
  • The card play is very solid.
  • The board part is good, interesting, makes sense, not too convoluted, works out.
  • Satisfying pack openings.
  • It's good if you are good with not going down the rabbit hole of microtransactions and keeping up with the whole thing.
Cons
  • Microtransactions and keeping up with the whole thing can be a trap.
  • The banner with the dice tower in the name of the game seems a bit overkill.

  • Card Play — You get mana basically and you spend it for those cards, but you're also building a board that lets you traverse the space, get to your opponent's side and smack them.
  • Combat — You'll be using that deck to fight against your opponent.
  • Deck Building — I think what I'm going to do is go build a deck and then we'll try this again.
  • Deck construction — You are going to be constructing a deck of cards. You'll be using that deck to fight against your opponent.
  • Land Types — Plus, you need some specific land types to play specific cards.
  • Resource Management — I have three mana or whatever they call that. So, I can spend that to play cards.
  • Unit Placement — I can only play cards on my own land. So, I'm going to go ahead and play a couple of lands because I need to do that.

  • It is very Hearthstone, including them selling you new sets, them selling you over here.
  • So, it's Hearthstone, but it also has a board. So, it's kind of like Hearthstone with geog geometry, geography, both.
  • The board part is good. It's interesting. It makes sense. It's not too convoluted. It works out. I really like it.
  • The opening of the the packs, the cards, the whole like the thing vibrates and then explodes and you're like, that gets you every time, doesn't it?
  • This is very solid.

Quotes (from this video)
  • I'm going to throw it out. I'm So all day I'm just gonna say Don and I'll let you guys decide who I'm actually talking to because I have not figured out a good way to do it without like long names here.
  • The little epilogue, we were laughing reading it like actually out loud laughing, not like, 'Oh, that's funny.' Like legitimately funny as you go through.
  • And this one uses an app that I my understanding is it does like all kind of the behind the scenes math and stuff for you.
  • It's like if you know Alan Moon did Oathsworn you'd be like what?
  • This game is crazy pants. It is hard and I love it.
  • It's deadly if you focus on all of them.
  • This is the kind of game that you could play many
  • I adore that that's on there, especially in a two-player game.
  • If you want a free lunch, go eat your house
  • And that's a testament of a really really good game, especially one as heavy as Sweetlands.
  • Stuper Monday is one of those games that similar to Sweetlands. It's not as deep, it's not as heavy as Sweetlands, but when it comes to timing, efficiency of actions, and uh sort of using cards to do actions, it's it's right there in that sweet spot.
  • This is a train game but with magic. And the magic matters because basically it's like ah gosh I can't connect my train to this spot. Magic. And now I just teleport over it and I keep moving the stuff.

Quotes (from this video)
  • It's a game I very much adore.
  • It's my top 10 characters I enjoy playing. I feel good while I'm playing them. It has nothing to do with how powerful they are, how weak they are.
  • They feel good to me. They feel like they're characters in many ways, the the the the comic characters they're attempting to represent.
  • It feels broken a little bit.
  • This is my top 10 heroes in Marvel Champions.
  • It is just These are characters I very much enjoy bringing to the table, shuffling up and playing. They feel good to me.
  • I love the idea of progression in Marvel Champions. That That feeling of your character getting better and better at whatever it is that they do.
  • Ironheart, my number two, literally does this by upgrading her card, the card that represents you in the game, by taking her card here from version one of the Ironheart suit to version two, to eventually version three, which is tremendously overpowered basically.
  • You're you're racing the villain to see who can outpace the other.
  • The characters that play risky tend not to be my favorites. The characters that really tow the line where you're living dangerously for lack of a better term.
  • My number one is the character that I guess the exception that proves the rule, let's call it, and it is also happens to be one of my favorite, thematically one of my favorite characters in the game, and that is Wolverine.
  • Wolverine has an ability here where at the beginning of your round you get to heal two damage, which is tremendous, but the reason for that is because you're going to be taking a whole bunch of damage with your claws.
  • this whole paying for cards things, that's for the birds. I'm going to live dangerously by spending my life total to be able to drop this card that costs four for free, and I still have all my cards left.
  • It's insane, it feels tremendous.
  • My favorite character in the game. That is Logan i.e. Wolverine.

  • Multiplicative movement — If you use two dice and the total is seven or less, you move twice the sum; if you use all three dice and the total is seven or less, you move three times the sum.
  • Roll-and-move with constrained totals — If the sum of the dice on your turn would exceed seven, the turtle returns to the raft, ending your turn and passing play to the next player.
  • Stacking and Balancing — When a turtle lands on another turtle, it stacks on top; the top turtle's owner determines whether to roll the second and third dice on future turns, influencing control and risk.
  • Stacking and carrying — When a turtle lands on another turtle, it stacks on top; the top turtle's owner determines whether to roll the second and third dice on future turns, influencing control and risk.
  • Two- and three-player variants — In smaller player counts, players control two turtles each; egg cards can substitute for rolls in a limited way, preserving tempo and tension even with fewer participants.

Pros
  • Strong world-building and art progression; the comic-book feel grows on you
  • Lore-rich Summoners with distinct backstories add thematic depth
  • Robust resource management and trading options foster player interaction
  • Temple/blessing mechanics provide meaningful strategic choices
  • Dramatic tower/defender interactions create tense, pivotal moments
Cons
  • Dice luck can dominate outcomes, especially in 2-player games
  • Long playtime for 3–4 players; no published playtime estimate on the box
  • Some unit availability and consistency concerns observed during playtesting
  • Rulebook density and setup can be intimidating for newcomers
Thematic elements
  • Conquest, territory control, and resource management in a magical world
  • Fantasy realm of Throk where five Summoners vie for towers and control of domains
  • Lore-rich background stories for each Summoner; flavor text and world-building drive immersion
Comparison games
none
Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Area control / tower control — Players vie for control of towers and their own domain; holding towers contributes to end-of-round victory conditions.
  • Defender square and tower dynamics — Battles occur on defender squares; towers provide extra hits and can be crumpled or repaired; control can shift through combat outcomes.
  • Dice-based combat (fleet variant) — Attacks resolve with dice results; hits translate into wounds and potential unit death; the fleet variant emphasizes multiple dice with hits counting per die.
  • Movement on a grid — Units move orthogonally, diagonally, or in combination up to their movement value; engagement requires at least one movement.
  • Resource Management — Four resource types (Blood Stones, Dragon's Teeth, Toad Stool, Fairy Dust) are used to summon units; players prioritize primary, secondary, and tertiary resources to meet unit requirements.
  • Temples and blessings — Temples grant blessings that upgrade a unit's hit rating; blessed units flip when hit and may revert after damage; temples add strategic depth to positioning.
  • Trading and transmutation — Resource cards can be traded between players; three of a kind can be transmuted for another resource from the discard pile, enabling flexible purchasing.
  • Unit deployment and portal rules — Summoned units enter via the domain portal; if blocked, the unit returns to the pool and spent resources go to discard, creating risk-reward decisions.
