Description

PARKS is a celebration of the US National Parks featuring illustrious art from Fifty-Nine Parks.

In PARKS, players will take on the role of two hikers as they trek through different trails across four seasons of the year. While on the trail, these hikers will take actions and collect memories of the places your hikers visit. These memories are represented by various resource tokens like mountains and forests. Collecting these memories in sets will allow players to trade them in to visit a National Park at the end of each hike.

Each trail represents one season of the year, and each season, the trails will change and grow steadily longer. The trails, represented by tiles, get shuffled in between each season and laid out anew for the next round. Resources can be tough to come by especially when someone is at the place you’re trying to reach! Campfires allow you to share a space and time with other hikers. Canteens and Gear can also be used to improve your access to resources through the game. It’ll be tough to manage building up your engine versus spending resources on parks, but we bet you’re up to the challenge. Welcome to PARKS!

Before You Play - PARKS video thumbnail
Click to watch at 0:00 · YouTube ↗
Overall sentiment (raw)
positive
Pros
  • Strong engine-building core with a clear upgrade path for dice and actions
  • Deep thematic integration of acclimatization, continents, and altitude considerations
  • High variability from 100 mountain cards plus a mid-game cycle shift to B deck for replayability
  • Meaningful player interaction on climbs through shared energy costs and joint climbs
  • Private endgame bonuses via bonus cards that incentivize diverse strategic paths
Cons
  • Prototype status means balance, iconography, and rule clarifications are still being refined
  • Steep learning curve due to multiple resource types (energy, gear, experience, companions) and complex climb interactions
  • Some B-deck mountains are extremely challenging, potentially slowing game pace at lower player counts
  • Partial playthrough may not reveal the full pacing and synergy across all upgrade tracks
  • Two-player games may underrepresent the game's intended depth and interaction density
Thematic elements
  • Mountaineering, exploration, and competitive flag placement with asymmetric endgame bonuses.
  • Global mountaineering expedition where players travel between continents to climb world-famous peaks, managing energy, gear, and experience along the way.
  • Engine-building, card-driven climbs with a mix of cooperative and competitive elements; two deck system (A and B) introduces mid-game shifts.
Comparison games
none
Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • action selection — On each turn, a player places a cube on one of three actions (rest, prepare, climb) and executes the action following a sequence of steps on their player board.
  • Card-driven climbs — There are 100 Mountain cards split into A and B decks; each card has bottom-left icons that denote climb requirements and top-left corner rewards chosen from two options.
  • Companions and bonuses — Companion cards contribute to experience or provide special effects; some companions reduce climb requirements or alter dice outcomes.
  • Endgame scoring with bonuses — Endgame bonuses come from bonus cards, continent control (most flags per continent), and other endgame objectives tied to climbed mountains and neighboring players.
  • Engine-building dice — Three upgradeable dice govern energy, gear gain, and experience/tracking bonuses; upgrading dice unlocks stronger rewards and enables more flags.
  • Resource and track management — Players manage energy (via stamina), gear, experience, companions, and flags; endgame is triggered by the first player placing 16 flags.

Quotes (from this video)
  • This game is designed to be an engine-building game for up to six players that features 100 Mountain cards that illustrate Mountains from all over the world.
  • This is a prototype copy of the game so things are subject to change in the future if you are interested in the campaign there's a link in the description which you can check out at your leisure.
  • We are going to be doing a partial playthrough of the game since some of the rules and cards are still being adjusted but we still wanted to give you an idea of how the game is played.
