Description

Our planet has run out of resources, and we are forced to move. We have discovered a series of planets and sent our rovers to test their environment with the hope of colonization. Our rovers have confirmed 1-6 viable colonization options.

Planet Unknown is a competitive game for 1-6 players in which players attempt to develop the best planet. Each round, each player places one polyomino-shaped, dual-resource tile on their planet. Each resource represents the infrastructure needed to support life on the planet. Every tile placement is important to cover your planet efficiently and also to build up your planet's engine. After placing the tile, players do two actions associated with the two infrastructure types on the tile. Some tile placements trigger "meteors" that make all planets harder to develop and prevent them from scoring points in the meteor's row and column.

Planet Unknown innovates on the popular polyomino trend by allowing simultaneous, yet strategic turn-based play via the Lazy S.U.S.A.N. space station in the center of the table.

Quotes (from this video)
  • If I wanted to play the same game but be really stressed, Silver Frost would be my go-to.
  • I argue I'd almost argue that it's the best artwork of any of the Everdale games.
  • Whereas normal Everdale, you can kind of chill and just be like, 'Yeah, let's build these fun things and look at my little critters.'
  • the landlord's game was the basic blueprint for Monopoly.
  • and arguably the best game ever made. So really what we've ranked is completely wrong.
  • that is quite dull. Let's say you're rolling. The only so I feel like the boring bit about it is that you're just rolling dice and you land where the dice tells you.
  • Monopoly Legacy.
  • The board state changes. Buildings go into disrepair and crumble around you.
  • There are elections. Hire one of you becomes a mayor of the city. You can control other people's turns and what properties they're going to buy.
  • How do you improve Cludo Legacy?
  • Well, just dying over and over again.

Quotes (from this video)
  • In this game, you are a superhero and you are building your own origin story.
  • It's a trick-taking game and every round you're mostly getting points for bidding and collecting the tricks that you want, but what's cool is that as you play, you keep acquiring new superpowers and these superpowers kind of change the rules for you with respect to how it is you take tricks.
  • Origin story checks all of the boxes, but that first one, that approaching problem-solving. I'd like to see something a little bit more challenging, a little bit more strategic.
  • It's the game Karuba.
  • This is a tile-placing game where the objective is to build a route from the explorers to the treasures.
  • This is a racing game where the end is triggered as soon as somebody collects all the treasures, but the winner is the person who has the most points.
  • I've been playing it with my kids since they were five years old. It really is an awesome game.
  • Again, this is Board Game Dad. Thank you so much for watching. I'll see you next time.

Quotes (from this video)
  • In my opinion, I think they are trying to make the right amount of games for people, but uh print to demand or print on demand is is very different.
  • We haven't discontinued Charter Stone. In fact, we haven't discontinued any of our games.
  • If there if there is demand for a game, we will make more of it.
  • I really love what Covenant is doing lately with these long form discussions that are available on their YouTube channel and also as a podcast.
  • I wonder if maybe it was put in there because the designer thought the game was running a little long in general.
  • My I've only played Deep Regrets once, but it lasted over 3 hours, which did feel a little long for the game.
  • I think um getting uh quantity of blind playtesting with that asymmetry and variability, and also analyzing that data.
  • I think it's a good question to ask yourself. Like how how much um if I'm putting a component that I think will cost quite a bit to make, how much value is that adding to the game?
  • I do have a recent video about regrets. In fact, I have two videos about regrets, so you can see um the types of things that I regret about game design and product design decisions.
  • If we can combine those two together for a seamless experience without increasing the price, we're happy to do that.
  • I truly truly am not interested in using AI at all.
  • I think the original Between Two Cities box, I think it was too small.
  • People the contestants on Survivor have gotten really focused in my opinion of on trying to bring people to the finale that they think they can win against.
  • "Human made no generative AI." We have that on the box of the the reprint of the Wingspan European expansion.

Quotes (from this video)
  • We're going to use Wingspan, Scythe, and Terraforming Mars and Planet Unknown.
  • Scythe is a very specific puzzle.
  • Can't believe I skipped a turn on Wingspan. That is going to sting cuz Wingspan is not a particularly difficult realm.
  • Garrett says, 'Tough realm combo because you need pretty exact numbers for Wingspan eventually. And oh, one and a three, another low one. And I'm best served by exact for some pretty precise numbers in Scoville Tier, too. And it is easy to fall behind.'
  • You are correct, Garrett. It is a tough combination, but that's what makes the puzzle fun for me in Rolling Realms that you have these different combinations to work with.
  • All right. Take care. Let me know how you scored in the comments.

Quotes (from this video)
  • Meaningful strategic decisions that then feed into a lot of random outcomes and very entertaining random outcomes.
  • The game does the best like chain reaction type experience that I think I've seen in a game.
  • It feels like Ethnos meets Quacks of Quedlinburg.
  • It's got the same element as a game like Quacks where you might just have a bad round drawing. But it feels even worse in this game because you're playing a big two plus hour game and have a bigger overarching strategy. So for it to really not pan out it stings more.
  • Number one goes to Arcs.
  • This is the marriage of those two [heavy conflict interactions and trick taking].
  • When you're able to pull something off, it feels like this game is so satisfying.
  • Having the cards push you in different directions and like I can't do what I want, but how can I make something work? I find a lot more kind of compelling and replayable.

  • It's going to spin around and randomly select one of the five areas.
  • It is a spinner, not a dial.
  • I'd rather spin it around and see what I get and then use that to the most of my ability rather than slowing down the game for everyone else by making a very intentional choice that will take some time.
  • I welcomed randomness.
  • We're not going to do that. Instead, the active player is going to flick this dial and let it spin around.

Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • asymmetrical_boards — Each player has a unique planet board alongside a dual-sided corporation board, offering distinct starting conditions and evolving strategies; asymmetry encourages diverse tactics.
  • biomass_track — Biomass track awards green bonuses that let you place additional greens to complete rows or attach tiles anywhere on your board; this creates flexible scoring opportunities.
  • central_rotation (Lazy Susan) — The active player spins a central Lazy Susan to reveal two tile options. All other players then choose one of the two tiles in front of them, creating a fast-paced, simultaneous feel with minimal downtime.
  • civ_cards — Face-down Civ cards are drawn when thresholds on the civilization track are reached, granting temporary or ongoing benefits that influence planning and timing.
  • components_and_setup — All tiles and boards are compactly designed and stored together, allowing quick setup and pressure-free play; the material quality and the molded rails for the corp boards reduce accidental slides and clutter.
  • rover_and_meteor_mechanics — Advancing on the corporation tracks moves a rover that can retrieve objects and meteors, which are collected and placed on a player's board; meteors interact with scoring and end-game state.
  • scoring_and_endgame — End-of-game scoring awards points for completed rows and columns while meteor strikes reduce stability; players optimize track progression to maximize points while defending against hazards.
  • Tile Placement — Players place polomo tiles onto their personal planet boards, aiming to complete rows and columns. Each tile provides scoring potential and triggers advancement along a civilization and technology track.
