How this game feels to play
Description

It is a time of unrest in 1920s Europa. The ashes from the first great war still darken the snow. The capitalistic city-state known simply as “The Factory”, which fueled the war with heavily armored mechs, has closed its doors, drawing the attention of several nearby countries.

Scythe is an engine-building game set in a 1920s era, alternate-history. It is a time of farming and war, broken hearts and rusted gears, innovation and valor. In Scythe, each player controls one of five factions of Eastern Europe, all of which are attempting to earn their fortunes and claim their stakes in the land around the mysterious Factory. Players conquer territory, enlist new recruits, reap resources, gain villagers, build structures, and activate monstrous mechs.

Each player begins the game with different resources (power, coins, combat acumen, and popularity), a different starting location, and a hidden goal. Starting positions are specially calibrated to contribute to each faction’s uniqueness and the asymmetrical nature of the game (each faction always starts in the same place). Scythe uses a streamlined action-selection mechanism (no rounds or phases) to keep gameplay moving at a brisk pace and reduce downtime between turns. While there is plenty of direct conflict for players who seek it, there is no player elimination.

Scythe gives players almost complete control over their fate. Other than each player’s individual hidden objective card, the only elements of luck or variability are “encounter” cards that players will draw as they interact with the citizens of newly explored lands. Each encounter card provides the player with several options, allowing them to mitigate the luck of the draw through their selection. Combat is also driven by choices, not luck or randomness. Every part of Scythe has an aspect of engine-building to it. Players can upgrade actions to become more efficient, build structures that improve their position on the map, enlist new recruits to enhance character abilities, activate mechs to deter opponents from invading, and expand their borders to reap greater types and quantities of resources. These engine-building aspects create a sense of momentum and progress throughout the game. The order in which players improve their engines adds to the unique feel of each game, even if having played one faction multiple times.

Quotes (from this video)
  • It's a way for board game publishers to take their existing customer base that has already purchased something from them, and say "Well you like that? Heeere's more!"
  • Because usually expansions require you to have the base game in order to play with them.
  • So you don't get it home and get disappointed or feel ripped off.
  • And the cynical side of me suspects that that's just a way for publishers to train their customers to try to play their games more than other people's games, right?
  • So I have a lot of expansions in my collection that are either unopened, or they've... I've just opened them and organized them, I've played them maybe once, or they're on my big list of things that I desperately want to play, and it's all because the people I play with don't know the base game.
  • So that's really important to know going in, hoping - you know - hoping that you can mix everything together, and then finding out that you can't.
  • It should go without saying, but it just feels better playing with better stuff!
  • So what you really have to try to figure out, and it's difficult I realize, is: will paying that extra money be worth that amount of enjoyment that I will get out of extending the lifespan of the game?
  • BUY!!! BUY!!! BUY!!!

Pros
  • Enlist star is very powerful; can yield a large number of combat cards
  • Mechs enable spreading workers and claiming territories efficiently
  • Strong synergy with power and combat stars
  • Possibility of two-star turns in a single turn under the right conditions
  • Certain boards (e.g., Patriotic) can boost coin generation via bolstering
Cons
  • Build star is awkward and slow to achieve
  • Upgrade star is a bottom-feeder star requiring many bottom-row actions
  • Encounters tend to lose power in mid to late game
  • Popularity star is often not worth pursuing due to action costs
  • Naked mech (mech with no workers) is discouraged as a poor tactical choice
Thematic elements
Comparison games

Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Board variants influence strategy — Different boards (Patriotic, Innovative, Mechanical, Agricultural, etc.) alter star value and action costs.
  • Combat and bluffing — Combat decisions rely on power and bluffing; opponents' responses and power holdings influence outcomes.
  • Combat: Deck/Hand — Enlists provide powerful combat cards; combination with neighbors' enlists can yield many cards.
  • Enlist and combat cards — Enlists provide powerful combat cards; combination with neighbors' enlists can yield many cards.
  • Mechs and territory spread — Mechs move workers and help expand into territories; distributing workers across the board is key.
  • Popularity and buildings — Popularity affects scoring; building actions can increase popularity and influence stall strategies.
  • Power, coins and upgrades — Power and coins are key resources; upgrading and bolstering affect actions and point potential.
  • Star priority order — Prioritize stars in a specific order (workers, enlist, combat, mech, objective, power, build, upgrade, popularity) depending on board and strategy.
  • Top-row vs bottom-row actions — Strategic planning centers on optimizing top-row actions (produce/deploy/move) and bottom-row actions (enlist/bolster, etc.), with boards affecting efficiency.
  • Worker Placement — Workers are central to scoring; more workers enable more territories and thus more points.
  • Worker placement and star system — Workers are central to scoring; more workers enable more territories and thus more points.

  • The four words that all begin with the letter E they are explore expand exploit and exterminate
  • The term 4X generally describes again this is not a hard and fast rule but a grandiose epic big long game with a lot of moving parts

  • I would much rather have you know one designer two designers work on one game with components that are made specific before that game that they want me to play than just sort of this grab bag of game components and ideas and concepts
  • Cyril helped me figure out that I don't really like tile placement games
  • they managed to take sherlocky subject matter and build the really schlocky game out of it that feels like a zombie movie but it feels sort of slapdash
