Description

In the 2400s, mankind begins to terraform the planet Mars. Giant corporations, sponsored by the World Government on Earth, initiate huge projects to raise the temperature, the oxygen level, and the ocean coverage until the environment is habitable. In Terraforming Mars, you play one of those corporations and work together in the terraforming process, but compete for getting victory points that are awarded not only for your contribution to the terraforming, but also for advancing human infrastructure throughout the solar system, and doing other commendable things.

As a player, you acquire unique project cards (from over two hundred different ones) by buying them to your hand. The cards can give you immediate bonuses, as well as increasing your production of different resources. Many cards also have requirements and they become playable when the temperature, oxygen, or ocean coverage increases enough. Buying cards is costly, so there is a balance between buying cards and actually playing them. Standard Projects are always available to complement your hand of cards. Your basic income, as well as your basic score, are based on your Terraform Rating. However, your income is boosted by your production, and VPs are also gained from many other sources.

You keep track of your production and resources on your player board. The game uses six types of resources: MegaCredits, Steel, Titanium, Plants, Energy, and Heat. On the game board, you compete for the best places for your city tiles, ocean tiles, and greenery tiles. You also compete for different Milestones and Awards worth many VPs. Each round is called a generation and consists of the following phases:

1) Player order shifts clockwise.
2) Research phase: All players buy cards from four privately drawn.
3) Action phase: Players take turns doing 1-2 actions from these options: Playing a card, claiming a Milestone, funding an Award, using a Standard project, converting plant into greenery tiles (and raising oxygen), converting heat into a temperature raise, and using the action of a card in play. The turn continues around the table (sometimes several laps) until all players have passed.
4) Production phase: Players get resources according to their terraform rating and production parameters.

When the three global parameters (temperature, oxygen, ocean) have all reached their required levels, the terraforming is complete, and the game ends after that generation. Combine your Terraform Rating and other VPs to determine the winning corporation!

Quotes (from this video)
  • My son is going to be excellent at those type of games we're talking chat we're talking uh yeah Chinatown we're talking bear raid we've already got strong negotiations skills.
  • I have a very compelling reason that it was my least favorite we only had the base game we had no Kickstarter extras we had no expansions we had no extra missions no extra cards no extra enemies.
  • It's just not singing songs.
  • If I'm sitting at an angle to the board where I can't read the names on the board very easily I struggle a lot.
  • My ability to recall names limited my ability to recall pictures stories and uh tell Tales is heightened because the way that words process in my brain unlike your brain is you use you you probably use the more if if you have a um non-dyslexic brain uh that means the part of the brain that deals with uh numbers memory um short-term and long-term recall uh deals with kind of analytics uh that part of the brain is the part of the brain that learned language for you.
  • My brain is the part of the brain that handles visuals is the part of the brain that learned language for me which means I cannot spell at all it affects your uh short-term kind of immediate recall but I can tell stories and I can see pictures and I can remember nicknames and all of that's kind of its own unique uh wonderful superpower.
  • Terraforming Mars best game out of these 6 and arguably the best with a newborn.
  • The important thing always find a scapegoat.
  • I know I'm going to think of it the moment I turn this off.

  • Whoever has the most monies at the end of this pop quiz will be employee of the month.
  • This game is broken every other Wednesday.
  • This is so bad for me, y'all.
  • I'm so bad at this.
  • My brain doesn't do these.
  • I guess I can give you a little clues if you want to.
  • So, this is uh this is from the teens.
  • This is the worst round of I've ever done in the history of these kinds of games.
  • The problem is these aren't helping because it's just flavor text from Lord of the Rings.
  • I was like, Lord of the Rings doesn't have flavor text and I was like, oh, what would have a ton of flavor text is the card game, of course.
  • So, we each have a strike. Strike.
  • Gosh, man.
  • Yeah. So, what's what's our current score right now?
  • So those are all basically fake on West but they were still number one.
  • Mike is the employee of the month.
  • Nick, you will be our next pop quiz master.

  • Colonies expansion adds too much complexity and unbalances the game.
  • Turmoil expansion is considered a must-avoid.
  • Map size feels unnecessarily large for the base game.
  • Playing with 4 players can be too much, 5 is "right out."

Quotes (from this video)
  • This is something I fancy doing for a bit of a change cuz I don't think I've seen this list done by many other creators.
  • The ones that improved over time. Occasionally is here, but it's less common.
  • Trust me, when I tried to come up with this list, I could only think of 10 games.
  • It's just a case that before I either didn't like them or found them kind of meh. And now I'm like, yeah, I'll play them. I'm fine.
  • The heart has warmed to them and therefore I'm willing to give them a try.
  • It's like, oh, I don't know, I'm going to need this and this well, how do I get that well, I need to get these three things and turn them into this and it's that this whole thing is actually quite cool.
  • And so when you throw in all the janky factions and too many players it just becomes ridiculous. I can't do this.
  • Honestly, the main time I've warmed up to Race of the Galaxy is playing as a two-player. I think two-player is the best way.
  • But the app from Czech Game Editions is just too freaking damn good.
  • This is not my day job, remember?
  • It's still only a game, so hopefully you enjoyed it at the end.

Quotes (from this video)
  • The camera does something unique. You see, it keeps everyone's attention on the game and very quickly removes and exposes the areas that seem to ruin all our gaming experience.
  • The phone can be very annoying.
  • By talking out your turns, you play more accurately and you actually play a little quicker than you would if you just sit in silence with analysis paralysis.
  • Quackaloupe and Quackaloupe affiliate products stand soundly against board games such as The Mind that involve no talking whatsoever at all.
  • Lighting makes all the difference in the world.
  • So, there you have it. From one board game expert renowned in nearly every way to either a balding amateur or a firefighter who got a little too close to the heat.
  • Stay tuned because I think the next conversation needs to be five reasons why I hate and I mean I like that's a strong word. I mean it like poptarts still frozen.
  • I hate playing board games at conventions. Like it's terrible. It's miserable.

Quotes (from this video)
  • Unlike other rankings that I know and love, like on BoardGameGeek, the hotness, um the hotness is kind of dominated by games that are coming out in the future, rather than games that are already that people are actively already playing.
  • I wanted a power ranking hotness-style list about games that we've already played, and now that we've played them, we want to play them again.
  • The bottom three get knocked off, and next month they will be replaced by Terraforming Mars, Sanctuary, and Dune Imperium.
  • I think that is really clever. I kind of want to see more games with this discovered asymmetry that impacts all players during the game.
  • This is the number two game that people have played that they want to play again.
  • A real classic game here that has been given a little bit of new life thanks to I think the special edition, which is really stunning.
  • I think these are games that people play. Like, people aren't I don't think everyone is playing Galactic Cruise every night. And even if you are, you're probably mixing in a lighter game every now and then. And those games I think are relevant are are relevant, too.

  • These are top 100 games for the people that do not appear in my personal top 100 solos list.
  • I've only played the original Zombicide and Zombicide Black Plague. Black Plague is much better than the original and, you know, it's fun for what it is, but I didn't really enjoy it solo.
  • I saw someone online call this game a slog, and honestly, I think that's the best word for what I felt.
  • I have no question that this is a great deck-building game.
  • I had very similar issues with this one as I had with The 7th Continent.
  • I love Scythe as a multiplayer game.
  • I get a lot of flak for not putting Nemo's War on my lists.
  • I think it looks hideous. It's a bad production.

  • One thing I think I'd like to mention is that I still think it's fairly unique that in Scythe, the resources that you earn, the the the wheat, the wood, the the ore, the oil, that they are all kept on the board itself.
  • I love the interactions that happen here. It's one of my favorite types of interactions in games.
  • I think what I will say is uh I'm kind of amazed that it uses such a clever dice selection mechanism. And I'm kind of amazed that other games haven't tried to use this.

  • I think the fifth similarity is the way you do have those two types of cards terraforming Mars what had three the red green and blue but essentially you had the green the green and the blue and the blue was the engine building cards and the green was the point scoring ones all Loosely speaking yes and you've got that here as well with the sponsor cards giving you that engine build and the animal cards giving you the points
  • the ending is very abrupt someone when someone reaches by the time you get to the end of the game if you've planned everything out correctly you should be getting like 10 15 even 20 points per turn

  • Terraforming Mars: Ares Expedition
Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Action order: support then main — Most turns involve a support action (e.g., modifying dice) followed by a main action (often playing a card).
  • Board placement of oceans, cities, and forests — Players place oceans and build cities/forests with adjacency scoring implications.
  • Card chaining / sun card mechanics — Chaining mechanic where paying costs can grant another die and enable further card plays (e.g., playing a sun card to gain a die).
  • Card play with costs and effects — Play cards from hand; costs are shown on the card; cards can place oceans, grant bonuses, or score points; green cards can modify production.
  • Card types: events and production cards — Red events allow printed effects; blue/green cards provide passive or one-off actions and/or extra dice; green cards often increase production.
  • Dice manipulation via spending — Spend two dice to convert one die into another side; discard down to three dice during production.
  • Dice-based resource system — All resources come from dice; on production turns you draw up to five cards and gain production dice; you discard down to three dice if needed.
  • End-game conditions via end-track thresholds — The game ends when two out of three end-track conditions are met.
  • Milestones and Awards scoring — Milestones are awarded for reaching certain goals; awards reward specific card combinations or costs.
