Description

Dune: Imperium is a game that finds inspiration in elements and characters from the Dune legacy, both the new film from Legendary Pictures and the seminal literary series from Frank Herbert, Brian Herbert, and Kevin J. Anderson. As a leader of one of the Great Houses of the Landsraad, raise your banner and marshal your forces and spies. War is coming, and at the center of the conflict is Arrakis – Dune, the desert planet. Dune: Imperium uses deck-building to add a hidden-information angle to traditional worker placement. You start with a unique leader card, as well as deck identical to those of your opponents. As you acquire cards and build your deck, your choices will define your strengths and weaknesses. Cards allow you to send your Agents to certain spaces on the game board, so how your deck evolves affects your strategy. You might become more powerful militarily, able to deploy more troops than your opponents. Or you might acquire cards that give you an edge with the four political factions represented in the game: the Emperor, the Spacing Guild, the Bene Gesserit, and the Fremen. Unlike many deck-building games, you don’t play your entire hand in one turn. Instead, you draw a hand of cards at the start of every round and alternate with other players, taking one Agent turn at a time (playing one card to send one of your Agents to the game board). When it’s your turn and you have no more Agents to place, you’ll take a Reveal turn, revealing the rest of your cards, which will provide Persuasion and Swords. Persuasion is used to acquire more cards, and Swords help your troops fight for the current round’s rewards as shown on the revealed Conflict card. Defeat your rivals in combat, shrewdly navigate the political factions, and acquire precious The Spice Must Flow cards to lead your House to victory!

Quotes (from this video)
  • I hate that it bugs the crap out of me
  • I don't want to have a list I don't want to order these I don't want to have a favorite out of these you know like don't make me choose
  • It's just so easy to quick pick up and play you just won't really have to remember too much too many rules or anything
  • it's cheap you go buy twenty dollar book
  • it has the Tactical fun combat
  • it's just pure Wizards and spells and you can just cook up all of these cool scenarios
  • I think you need the first expansion in my opinion it adds enough variety and stuff to the cards to just make it a lot more replayable and just give you some other kind of fun sort of you know strings to pull on
  • Don't believe anybody that tells you that because I have seen somebody win the game who had the ability to beef up their dreadnoughts and then never built a single dreadnought and won the game

Quotes (from this video)
  • The most interesting thing about role-playing games are those really cool character interaction moments.
  • I think it's better to come up with your own one and let sort of conspiracy theories run wild.
  • I think every game is making a political statement.
  • We're often put in positions where we don't have time to think about the future we're we're barely being able to hold on to the past or pay our rent or pay our bills or whatever it is we're dealing with the present or the past and I think we're finally at a spot where we can start taking some of the lessons of our pasts of our of our cultures and going well how would those apply to the Future.
  • That that complaint comes from a narrative laziness.
  • What makes a game indigenous is having an indigenous designer.
  • I fundamentally disagree with the idea that games are not political.
  • It cannot be said enough until everybody just assumes it's a truism we need to keep saying it.
  • It's like it's never just a game every single game is an artifact of its culture and it has some kind of perspective.
  • I think there's some Core Concepts there in a lot especially of a lot of like Euro games that that have that baked in and that's not necessarily I'm not trying to necessarily say that those games are all evil or bad or I don't like them or I mean that's not that's not what I'm saying at all I'm just trying to bring awareness to thinking about the mechanics that you're using and you're playing and thinking about the themes that you're engaging with.
  • When I say gross I mean that that vision are some of the most difficult for me.

Pros
  • More accurately depicts and engages with the book's universe.
  • Introduces the sandworm mechanic.
  • A much deeper, more rewarding, and longer-lasting game.
  • Enhanced locations, spies for manipulation, emphasis on combat, and ability to combine/craft decks.
  • Lower cost cards with more powerful abilities and high-cost, high-punch cards.
  • More rewarding buy and draw cards structure.
  • Cohesion in factions is a compelling aspect, rewarding close-knit and tactical play.
  • Can fill hand with many cards quickly, rewarding the discarding of base cards.
  • The game can be more rewarding and has more depth.
  • Can always catch up in Uprising, which matters.
  • When combined with the right elements, can offer a better deck-building experience.
  • The changes made greatly improve the experience.
  • Second and third place in combat have compelling things to aim for.
  • Paired objectives allow players to decide when to go all-in in a battle.
  • Resource demanding extra victory points on cards.
  • Duplicating effect of sandworms can be fun and impactful.
  • Less of a wrong thing to overemphasize combat than Dune Imperium did by underemphasizing it.
  • The game can be much more swingy and offer a controllable level of variance.
  • Makes the puzzle more enjoyable than the base game.
  • Can win one combat or not even win but prevent someone else from scoring.
  • Victory points can score much higher.
  • Ability to buy multiple cards of a similar faction.
  • Rewarding end-game scoring moments and pops.
  • Games can run up to high point thresholds with most players above 10.
  • Can always catch up in Uprising.
Cons
  • Does not match the lore and story told in the books as well as the base game.
  • Spy mechanic doesn't accurately reflect the book where information is restricted and loyalty is key.
  • Sandworm mechanic does not stay true to the book's purpose of sandworms.
  • Sandworms in the game attack enemies, whereas in the book they did not attack enemies but broke things and were used as troop transports.
  • Heavy emphasis on combat might be too much for some.
  • Belief that they went too far in rebalancing combat for Uprising.
  • Need to win multiple combats to have a shot at winning the game.
  • The game can be too swingy.
  • The helter-skelter nature can ruin the game if players prefer a more controlled experience.
  • Won't happen much to win without worms.
  • Scales back on complexity of leaders in favor of complexity on the board.
  • The Bloodlines expansion's Sa'car commanders are considered lacking and cumbersome by one speaker.
  • The game can feel less rewarding if combat is too heavily emphasized.

  • Deck building is more highly emphasized.
  • Satisfying deck building experience with potential for combos.
  • Less emphasis on combat compared to Uprising, allowing for background strategies.
  • Decisions feel very important, especially in later game, creating a strategic chess match.
  • Can sneak in and work around combat by focusing on tracks and resources.
  • Rewarding when a player can win without others noticing.
  • The base game with Rise of X expansion is considered a '10' by one speaker.
  • Incorporates elements from the first movie.
  • Can be a thematic and lore-driven puzzle.
Cons
  • Deck building didn't focus enough on combat.
  • Board spaces are bland and don't offer much growth.
  • Originally the least favorite of its genre before expansions.
  • Underemphasized combat.
  • Difficulty in getting cards and not being rewarded by having many.
  • Requires the 'clear the row' wipe system from expansions (Immortality) which should have been in the base game.
  • Harder threshold to cross with deck building.
  • Can struggle to get cards and is not rewarded by having a lot of them.
  • Found it hard not to spend collected money, leading to disappointment when unable to use it.
  • A 'cool strategy' ended up with too few cards and not drawing to the threshold.
  • Underemphasized combat to its detriment.
  • The game can feel less dynamic if players are not focused on combat.
  • Decisions can feel less impactful if the game swings too much.

Quotes (from this video)
  • I like Dune Uprising more than Dune Imperium and I'm the complete opposite
  • We're debating games that are very very solid to begin with you're going to win no matter what you play it just comes down at this point to preference and why we like certain things over others
  • For me personally having played multiple times between the original and Uprising the one that I feel is more accurately depicting and like kind of you know making me feel more engaged with the book The Universe found in the book has got to be this one
  • Uprising for me is a much deeper much more rewarding and much more longlasting game in my collection than base game Imperium is
  • Base game is much more like a chess match
  • I function well in chaos and this game gives me that
  • I think they went too far with it I think there's too much of an emphasis on I need to win multiple combats in order for me to have any shot of winning this game
  • I think you can always catch up an uprising and I think that matters
  • Rise of X is a 10 for me on Board Game Geek
  • I hate the five and six player variants of uh of this game
  • I think it's terrible I think it's unplayable

  • So, inserts I think are worth it.
  • The money you get in those two games is garbage.
  • I do have a lot of inserts in a lot of my games. Now, some of them I probably shouldn't have bought because the game doesn't get played often enough.
  • Upgrade it from something that's crap to something that's really good. Don't upgrade something that's already good to something that's just a bit more good. It's not worth the money.
