hello and welcome to another what you played q a show my name's Matthew and together with a valley your help let's answer all of the world's burning board game questions the first question this month is fun it's we all own some strange games one of the weirdest games you own strange is subjective I mean I've normalized a lot of the weird parts of my life so that I think it's just fine but I mean class to The Outsider I can see people looking at Classic and going what but for me and for a lot of ball Gamers we're just like yeah it's class let's just ask crow canal to a normal person looks bizarre but to us we're like yeah it's broken up as though that's a normal word to use it's a subjective list but I do have a few games I think are quite strange mind bug is a card game where you are playing cards against your opponent in a classic kind of Magic the Gathering feeling kind of way you play a card down and your opponent plays a card down and you do stuff and you attack and you try to win you've got three Health points however there are these mind bugs in the game which allow you to just take control of your opponent's card you've got two of them and it's when you use them it's a very bizarre game and I can see that as being a bit weird I also own a game
which is called heck Mech and there's lots of different versions of this it's called Pokemon in some places it's a rhino game fantastic game where you're rolling dice in a Yazi style to try and get these uh these uh tiles which are great the only weird part about the whole game is that it along with the entire chicken line of games from zoc verlag are highly bizarrely themed in hack Mac you are chickens trying to steal different worms from a Barbie grilled worms you're trying are they grilled worms in that one there was another one with this grilled ones there's a lot in the series it's highly bizarre thematically really truly strange but I love it other games I think are quite weird though on The Cat In The Box it means a popular game we we a lot of people have really been enjoying Cash In The Box but it's a trick taking card game where there's no suit there's no suits in the game until you decide what the suit of the game is that is strange all right regardless of what you think that slightly weird it's bizarre nightmare chess is a weird game it's chess but all the cards do vastly strange things I think there's lots of games that when we really truly look at them we go arguably this is strange not only what you're doing but the theme that has been chosen I love that there's weird games I've got a game called huel dock which is a card game but the theme is just
onions that's the theme for onions I love it weird abstract nonsense themes they do make me happy what are the weirdest games that you own let me know because I'll probably buy them the next question I have is what board games would you recommend to video Gamers this is a quandary sometimes for people because a lot of people think of it as being one Hobby gaming but it's so often the case that they there's no crossover I know a lot of people who just play video games a lot of people who just play board games the reason is that people do their hobbies for different reasons thus going into the different Avenues but if you have a video gamer in your life or are a video gamer yourself hello welcome to what you play here are a few games that I think you really could get into the board game hobby via the Video Game World I've tried though to avoid apart from with one very node for example I've tried to avoid just the video game version of the board game first one is Sniper Elite the board game Sniper Elite the reason I mention it it is a video game already it's a board game implementation of a video game it's a fantastic game the reason I mention it is because I personally have had luck with that game in the past I've had some friends who are into video games and I was like do you want to try this game called Sniper Elite and they loved it they really really liked it now I think one of the main reasons I liked it in it
it's a hidden movement game where one person is the American Sniper the other people are playing in the Germans and you're trying to do your mission and the Germans are trying to catch the person doing their mission I think one reason that they liked it so much was it just completely blew their mind with the expectations and possibilities of what board games even offered it's like I did not know board games could do this and that I think was really exciting for them the next game I introduced those two people to specifically was unmatched which they have run away with quite literally I no longer have my copy of a match that uh it's at my friend's house unmatched is a skirmish game and the thing that they loved about it was all the different characters all the different possibilities there's so many versions so many different characters to play now loads of opportunities to play characters that you love and care about maybe you love like one of the IPS like Marvel or Jurassic Park and they loved it and it's simple to understand engaging it's very beautiful The Minis are very lovely and I think it's just once you're up and running with unmatched you just have endless possibilities with the game and yeah unmatched I think is a really solid choice for people who love point and click style games those kind of like mystery games problem solving deduction type of games I think you could introduce people to the exit series obviously there's the exit series The unlock series a bunch of those I think people could really get into that because it's it does the same thing you know you're
looking for the clues you're trying to work out what's on this card how to solve this puzzle this riddle this mystery I think exit games would be a really good option for video Gamers of course video games come in all shapes and sizes and manners and tastes so I've tried to have lots of different choices and that's why the next one is for those video Gamers who love three in a row games those matching style games where you're kind of like matching things and there's explosions going off well I thought potion explosion that's a great game for that you know if you will have someone who loves candy crush or something like that potion explosion is just a really good option I feel like for those types of Gamers because it it satisfies a lot of those same feelings scratches the same itch I feel like the next one I've written down is adrenaline now this is a game that I feel like went under the radar it's a cge game and it's literally a first person shooter game well obviously it's not literally a first it's meant to simulate a first person shooter type of feeling and you're going around this board with your character shooting people and getting resources and respawning and going off and shooting them again that one feels like a video game and I think people who love those kind of like shoot them up first person shooter kind of games adrenaline might be a really good choice for those for the stardew valley gamer in your life or even the people who love those kind of like efficiency games like satisfactory or something I think fields of green might suit them really really well fields are green another game I think goes largely under the radar one
of my favorite games of all time is in my top 10. it's a game where you are building out your farm those I mean it's the farm version of Among the Stars but you're trying to put things into your farm build it out but you need things to be next to water you need the docks to be next to this you want the dogs to be next to this you want the this type of grain to be next to this type of thing and you're planning out building this very bucolic looking Farm I absolutely love the game and I think that for people who love stardew get the stardew Valley soundtrack going in the background while you're playing fields of green I I want to do that now that sounds great there's a big series of games where you are kind of going off in a team to fight a zombie horde you know the Left 4 Dead set of the world those type of games and I think zombicide frankly you've got the Cooperative nature you're getting the equipment getting all this stuff all the resources that you need and tactically trying to fight off a zombie horde how could those video Gamers not enjoy some wholesome zombicide Action Now racing games are a huge genre of course and there's obviously going to be huge genres of video games that I'm missing out but racing games was a difficult one for me to pick a game for a lot of the racing games I really love technically are bidding games you know so downforce for instance long shot they're technically like gambling games to a larger extent but one game that is a race that doesn't
feel like a race or look like a race this might be a bit abstract I chose the Quest for Eldorado I mean it's a deck building game but you are trying to Race Across the ball and I feel like that energy that kind of excitement is replicated where you're trying to race across the board as quick as possible I mean obviously there are lots of racing games and Heath is also a very good option I think for people who like racing games but yeah Crossroad Rider I think makes a lot of sense there's a whole mass of games that are these card games essentially I mean slay the Spire is a hugely popular video game and now there's a board game version of it the one that I chose actually is aeon's end aeon's end is a classic deck builder in many ways but you're also fighting big monsters and I feel like for people who like those slay the Spire games aeon's end really isn't much of a leap for them and I think to understand the game they're gonna they're gonna catch on so quickly they're gonna know exactly what's going on getting new cards upgrading their deck getting more powerful so they can cause all these effects to kill the monsters I think aeon's end's a great one for the slay the Spire video game around there and for the wargamer out there I've chosen undaunted Normandy firstly there's so many war games out there that cover so many different time periods I appreciate that and vice versa in the board game model but undaunted Normandy is just such a great wonderful fun game that I personally love a lot also it's a huge
jumping off point it's because there's so much content for that game now but I think for the people who love the Strategic thought behind a a war game that's personable because it comes down to a unit by unit basis right it comes down to the person on the card is who's fighting I think those people might really enjoy undaunted what board games have worked for you in the past what have you introduced to video Gamers to try and not come about them but just broaden their Horizons let me know about that and the final question is are we in the Golden Age of board games this is a tough one because we don't know do we it only feels like we are but perhaps not I feel like it's a mixed bag as far as the Golden Age of board games we're certainly in a great age of board games but who knows how awesome and amazing and massive this hobby could be in 50 years in 100 years who knows my thought of that we aren't quite yet in the golden age is because if you say board games to the normal person on the street they're still going to say Monopoly to you but if you say video games to the average person on the street they're probably not going to say pong and Tetris and that to me suggests that ball games has a long way to go still
the golden age doesn't mean ubiquitous popularity amongst everybody I appreciate that the Golden Age of a very small thing can still remain a very small thing but I still think there's so much room for growth in the hobby the problem with saying the golden age is that it also kind of leans on the idea of the bubble bursting and I don't think the bubble is gonna burst anytime soon or possibly ever it's not really how these things tend to work I feel like I think we have Ebbs and we have flows we have high tide and low tide but I don't think we have the bubble bursting and all of a sudden No One's Gonna play board games I don't see that happening it's like saying all of a sudden no one's ever going to want to go on a hike anymore it's just not gonna happen but what makes you think we aren't quite in the Golden Age of board games and don't get me wrong we are in an abundant amazing era of games and it makes me so excited is that the world is getting an outside makes you sound like an old man but the world is getting more and more digital all the time well I think that board games offer an antidote to that step away a moment of Peace away from technology that like it or not humans are hardwired right upon to not be able to take all the time we need to be able to step back into nature that can mean doing something physical tactile real
and that's not to belittle like anyone else's hobby anything else the world in general I just think board games like book reading isn't gonna go away anytime soon because it really is a safe haven away from the technological age and obviously we all board game in different ways we all game in different ways but the primary way that most people game is as a communal in-person Hobby and I don't think that I desire to have communal in person time with our fellow human is gonna go away so I think while the Golden Age of board games May Never arrive I think we are a long way from the Zenith of the is Hobby I really do but what do you think let me know in the comments below any of your own answers to any of my questions any rebuttals that you think Matthew why are you like this let me know and also if you have any questions that you want to ask in an upcoming episode let me know as well and we can all answer those together in the comments below and I'll see you next time I'll see ya thanks for watching everyone bye
