Board Game Breakfast #543 Excellent Elocution
Transcript
Good morning everyone. Welcome back to the Dice Tower. My name is Chris Yee. I'm Wendy Yee. Good morning. I'm Eric Summerer. Good morning Eric Summerer. I'm Chris Yee. Nice to meet you. I'm Wendy Yee. Oh, there it is. And I'm Eric Summerer. Fantastic. Hey, we're kicking off this week here with Board Game Breakfast. This is going to be a fun normal week for the most part here on the channel. We're going to have a you know, top 10 list crowd surfing all that stuff. Tomorrow morning, we are doing a live play for Zombicide Dead Men Tales, the first Zombicide that's coming out from
I thought Dead Men Tail, not Tales. Well, these ones do cuz they're dead {question mark}.
They're so chatty.
They're breaking all the rules. You're little gossiping zombies. It's like in the D&D movie when you forget to ask the the third question.
You seen the D&D movie Eric? Uh yes. It I don't remember the gag though. It's been a while. The resurrection spell. You bring someone back, you can ask them three questions. Right.
Three questions. Anyway, yeah, so Dead Men Tales Zombicide tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. And that is the first Zombicide coming out from Fantasy Flight Games. So that's kind of cool. Yeah, so we've got a couple of other things going on. I'll be out of town starting Thursday. I'm going to be going to that Funky Town's Board Game Convention in Knoxville, Tennessee. Mhm. So that'll be nice. That'd be fun for you. Yeah. No houseboat though. Chris almost stayed on a houseboat. Do you know that they they have Airbnbs now that are like houseboats or like just docked boats that you can stay on? I mean, they have Airbnbs that are everything. So yeah, that makes sense. Ooh, I want to stay on a train. Like an Airbnb old abandoned train. With AC. I would like it to be serviced slightly, but yes.
Slightly abandoned.
Fully abandoned.
Semi-abandoned. But with bananas included. Like little breakfast.
Couple of bananas. They just a hobo comes by, sneaks bran muffins to you every morning. Okay, when Airbnb was brand new, [cough] it was like dirt cheap and they'd feed you breakfast. Like I feel like I feel like it's changed. Oh yeah. Everything that was cheap when it first started is no longer cheap. See Uber and Lyft as well. Uber Eats and Lyft Eats or whatever they do. Anyway, Yeah, so some cool stuff coming this week. Eric, is there a podcast coming this week? There is a podcast coming this week. We recorded it way early and I'm trying to remember what the subject is. I think we're talking about a to-go bag. Like what games are in your ready to go container and and then maybe which ones can you teach to the muggles when you're out and about at like a dinner party and say, "Hey, we have 15 minutes.
Would you like to play a game?" Here's not Uno. It's an interesting discussion. All right. H O T T O G O. And then one other very cool thing coming this week is that we have the official nominations for the Dice Tower Awards, the 19th annual Dice Tower Awards featuring the sultry dulcet tones of one Eric Michael Summerer. Oh, yeah. We did all the research and and got us at least 90% I think credit on pronunciation this time. I think.
Oh. I think we're darn close. 90%? That's That's pretty good. Which language trips you up the most? Polish? Is it Polish? Polish is very difficult to to pick up. French sometimes gives me trouble cuz the vowels don't make sense. Um But yeah, and and then there's the ones that don't have references and and you know, a lot of artists tend to not to have references just floating about. BGG isn't doing an interview with them at Essen or something and so it's a lot harder to find those actual references. Does the Google pronunciation help? It's actually helping more, but I don't always trust it unless it's going to give me the actual reference. At least sometimes the AI is going to say, "This is how you pronounce it. Here's why we're saying that." And I do appreciate when they give me that information cuz then I can double check. Yeah. Yeah, it's a that's that's a big one.
Yeah, so that'll be streamed Thursday morning. So yeah, if you want to see the the opening slate nominations for the Dice Tower Awards this year, bam. Thursday morning. Bam. Bam. Bam. We also want to talk about Dice Tower East. That's coming up the end of June slash beginning of July or it is the beginning of July. It's the very first of July. It's the firstest. That's right. We're just setting up like the day before. That's why I keep thinking it's the end of June.
Yes. Yeah, if you want to
a little early. Yeah. If you want to see one of the coolest features that we have for Dice Tower East this year, we just did a test at the Big Game Bash. Of this board game broadcast.
Yeah, so Oh, sorry. What?
[snorts]
Oh, ooh, I haven't heard that that tone in a long time. So
like eh. Oh, yeah.
That's a different tone. Yeah, I don't like that one. So virtualfleemarkets.com is a portal here where when you log in, there are different events and this is how we're doing virtual flea markets now instead of on on big kind of you know, BoardGameGeek geek lists. So this is a dedicated website where you can go to whichever event you want to. So for example, Dice Tower East 2026. You join this and you can see all of these different listings here. People are posting them up themselves. You can post up things. You can go through and peruse and purchase stuff. It'll show you some recently sold things here. What what is stuff selling for? Barcelona for five bucks?
That's the little expansion promo pack.
Oh, okay. Yeah. But you can go through browse listings and it'll show you all of these different you know, all the different stuff that people have posted up. So if you're interested in picking up and and some of them will have like extra details too. So we click on this root here and it'll show you several expansions included and then you can add in more details. You can make comments and and ask particular question which expansions already have a few you know, or whatever it may be. You can go to different listings and as you're interested, you can go to the buy or make an offer button right there. Sometimes there'll be extra images included if people have certain specific things that they want to show off. Some people have upgrades on their on the stuff that they're selling, 3D prints or you know, other official things. So go through this and very good prices on here. There's a bunch of very interesting and cool stuff. Ooh, Metrox.
Ooh, I don't need it.
I have a different version of it. But yeah, so virtualfleemarkets.com you can check out the Dice Tower East one and then there'll be the actual meet up at the convention where people be able to exchange things, but you can do all the the payment through you communicate through the different channels here, PayPal or establish that you want cash payment or whatever it is. So if you sign up for an account, you can you can list and sell stuff. You can go through and purchase stuff. And yeah, we used it actually just this last weekend at the Big Game Bash event we were at. And it went really smooth. It worked very nicely. And so thanks to Jason and his team for programming this and putting this together. It is very good and something you should definitely check out if you're anticipating coming to Dice Tower East, which you should be.
Yeah. All right. That's a lot of things. Chris also has a word from our sponsors he'd like to share with us for GripMats. This show is sponsored by GripMat who makes custom playmats for many of your favorite games. With their custom grip surface, you can keep cards and tiles in place without worrying about messing up the gameplay. Or you can get one without the grip surface if you just want a great looking mat. Whether sprucing up a hot new title or old classic, consider picking up a GripMat in the Etsy link below.
[screaming]
Do the scream. Do the scream, Chris. I like the scream one. I'm not YOUR DANCE MONKEY.
[screaming]
DANCE MONKEY, DANCE. THERE YOU GO. I'M WORRIED THAT that that that scream sounds more like me than me actually sounds like me. That's the real problem with life. That's the existential dread we all live with when there's a promo intro that is supposed to be us floating around out there that we have to see every couple weeks. Yeah. Yeah. I live a tough life. Hey, it's a tough life.
is a segment we call I Catchers where we talk about some things that have caught our attention in the last couple of weeks. I I think I mentioned last episode two weeks ago that I was about to head off to Barcelona. I was going to be accompanying the the school trip, but the reason I'm using past tense is that I didn't get to go. My youngest got sick right before we were supposed to leave. So the two of us did not get to go to Barcelona and and the the other two members of the family did. But one of the things that we did get to do while having a quiet week at home cuz you know, I didn't have any work to do. I was you know, doing other stuff. I was recording stuff for the Dice Tower's intro. I was working on a parody for the the Dice Tower Awards show.
Uh but we also got to bring out Slay the Spire the board game. And not only played it once, but played like three runs of Slay the Spire the board game. Unlocked a whole bunch of content from Slay the Spire the board game. And my youngest is like, this is great. I really love this game. And I mentioned that oh, you know, I think there was a an expansion that came along. It's called Slay the Spire downfall. Um and when this was originally announced, I said uh we still have a lot of stuff to unlock in the original game. So I'm not as interested in learning more. I just know it exists. Of course, now that we've played a lot more, now I know it exists and now I am quite interested in Slay the Spire downfall. Uh this is a an expansion for the board game that allows you to play as the villains. Uh four of the main um the most iconic bad guys from the original game are now playable characters for you to travel along and it it like flips the script. So the bad guy in the main game is the heart the corrupted heart. Uh you're now trying to defend the heart and go after Neow who is like the cosmic whale that's the good guy. Um leader, I guess. Uh and so you're going to be fighting evil versions or good versions boss versions of the original character. It flips the script entirely.
Um adds some clear cards and all sorts of fun stuff. Um of course, the campaign is over. But uh late pledges they say will be a thing uh in the next couple of months. So I am now signed up and I am kind of committed to to get the Slay the Spire downfall expansion uh cuz my youngest would really like to continue with more content uh from this this lovely game. I'm I'm excited for it. It it sounds like it has a lot of cool things. Uh and I have a lot more, you know, sometimes you hear about people like upset that they missed a particular Kickstarter. I have a lot more sympathy for those people cuz everybody makes purchase decisions at different timelines. Irregardless, I know I use that word uh of of the timeline of a campaign.
Uh and so it's nice to know there are sometimes ways that you can get the Kickstarter versions a little late. Um so I'm I'm excited to do that. They have their own bag. There's a bag? It's so big you need it. Wow. I don't know if I need to carry that around that often.
on top? I think so. Yeah, I think that's base game and expansion and then something.
Expansion. I don't know what's on top of that though.
that's actually a Taco Bell party box late night first meal.
Oh. It's a box of card sleeves.
Sweet. That could be. That could be. It could also be like extra alternate art cards or something. I like my theory better.
not played Slay the Spire, but our Dice Tower copy gets played so much that I've had to request uh like extra sleeves from the publisher multiple times. Wow. I mean, there was an issue with the early sleeves that they were peeling. Um and and so they've actually they will replace them entirely with a new set if you are having that issue. Um so I I have replaced my sleeves once in my copy because they started to peel.
Mhm. But the new sleeves shouldn't do that. There's the beta art. That's what that is.
Aw, that's a cute little uh Base game beta art. 381 tacos, no cards. Mhm. Mhm. Tacos. It's raining tacos from the sky.
Play mats. I don't need the like the super deluxe version. The super deluxe version comes with uh player neoprene mats. Um I'll get the smaller one that just comes with the multi-layered. I don't need the acrylic tokens, although they are pretty and you can get them as an add-on. And now I now I want those too. Stop showing me things, Chris. Fine. Gosh, man. Stop looking now. You talk about your stuff, Chris, so Eric can buy less things.
Anyway, I'm excited. All right, you want me to go next? Uh my eye catcher is uh these the last few days here of the Arribada and Seagrass campaign here. This is from Bitewing Games. And uh they've done this travel line of games with Gazebo and uh Gingham. Mhm. And I think that they you know, they they've done some interesting stuff with that little like travel package, but not as interesting as turning one of the travel packages into a sea turtle. Look at that. Look at that. Oh, it does have little legs and a head.
Yeah, it's got got all the things. Yeah, it's a little turt. So anyway, these are two games you can kind of like a little tile laying pattern type games uh coming from Bitewing. You can get them in a regular box. That'll be like the default. And if you back the Kickstarter, I believe that you get the travel package as like an optional or as a I think a free add-on if you back it and then you can purchase it later if I'm not mistaken. Uh and so yeah, these two games you have to types of tiles you draw and then you lay them out onto a onto a map with different interaction points and stuff with the players. Did you notice that that tile holder bag is the correct kind of tile holder bag? Round base? Yep. Yeah.
Stands up on its own.
Round base stands up. Uh-huh. Up and bottom jeans. It's got a little turtle. But yeah, so you you get in uh Arribada, you get these little uh turtle tiles with different numbers on them. And then the shell is a little clear plastic disc of your player color and that's how you mark them. So you can make a little turt and it's a little shell. Aw.
So anyway, super adorable uh designed by Robert Hovakimyan who also did Gingham. Uh and then I believe that Trevor Benjamin and Brett Gilbert are the designers on uh Seagrass here. So yeah, look at that. Look at them turts. So anyway, yeah, so Seagrass is uh yeah, I mean, I really like those designers and I really like that that turtle bag. I do have to say I'm not going to like cuddle that turtle bag in bed.
You don't know that.
quite that cuddly and soft.
I mean, I'm going to. Can you take the cardboard out of it and just add stuffing? I don't know if you put stuffing on the inside if it'll do much.
Anyway, yeah, it looks like it has a hard side. Yeah. Yeah. Quite a hard side. It'll actually protect your game pieces. So anyway, these look good. Uh I have a lot of trust in what Bitewing does. I haven't gotten to try these. Well, yeah, I haven't tried the finalized version of of Arribada or anything, but uh I haven't played Seagrass, but they look Aw, there's a jellyfish. And crabs. Ooh. Aw, the sea turts in both games. Anyway, yeah, I'm excited to check these out. Uh I really like what Bitewing does. So that's been my eye catcher the last 3 days here for uh for this particular Kickstarter. Nice. All right, my eye catcher is
a review of a Sorry, before you move on, is there a review from a dog uh as you scrolled by? Yeah, the Board Game Animal. Oh. Okay. Just checking. Now that you say it, I recognize it now. Uh thank you. Yeah. Yeah. No, no, no. Uh Justin is a human and that is the the dog who who is the owner of Justin, I think. Mhm. This makes sense now. I wonder what the dog does for a living. Poses for pictures, I think.
Yeah, it's a model, I think.
model. Okay.
Yeah, I like Board Game Animal.
I don't know if the dog is male. Truth on that. All right, we ready for me now? Oh, yeah. Rock it away. Okay. All right, so my eye catcher is a video game that I have been playing a ton of and Tom's been playing a ton of too. So he's probably already mentioned it on the channel, but it is Crimson Desert. So I have kind of taken I had taken a big step back from open world games because I just felt like they were like copy and paste, you know, you're doing the same fetch quest. You could go kill this guy. It's like three options of things you can do and everything is just the same. And then playing this, I'm like, oh, exploration again, storyline, cool. Um I just really enjoy the powers and stuff that you can unlock. And I think what's interesting about this is that you start off as just this dude who's trying to like find his scattered clan and he just has a sword and a shield and a bow. And then progressively like the mysterious stuff start showing up and unlocking and you're like, what? I'm going to this place called the abyss. And I there's like magical stuff involved. And so I think it's really cool how that like is slowly unlocks throughout it. And yeah, there's just ton to see. So I was a big fan of Skyrim.
Um that was my first like big open world game and loved it. Played for years. Absolutely adored it. And this gives me so many of those vibes. Like there's just tons of stuff that you can do. On that note, there are F words like every 2 seconds. So uh
if you are uh if you have young children around, the recommendation that Tom gave me was to put the audio in Korean. So that you can just read when it's a story, you could like read the story, but then every time you accidentally bump into someone, you're just not like being sworn at constantly. I would drop a lot of F bombs if I had to carry around a pig that big. Look how big that pig is. That is a big pig. Of all the things like him like jumping and swirling and magicking around, I think this is the most impressive thing right here. It is funny cuz you can there's so many different types of animals and you can just randomly pick them up. You're like, oh, hey look, a a dodo bird. I'm going to go pick that up. Why? Because cuz I can. I'm just carry it around for a little bit. Do you do you ever carry around your horse?
No, but when you when you like collect people for their bounties, you have to stick them on your horse and then climb on your horse and then go drive to the the main town and drop them off so you can get a reward for tying them up. This is the image I'm going to end on here. That's a good eye catcher one.
It's good. It's what I do all the time in the game. That's pretty much the whole game right there. Crimson Desert, right ladies and gentlemen.
All right, we're going to jump some contributors and we're back with our top 10 list. Hey board gamers, PJ from Board Game Gumbo here back in the breakfast. This time taking a look at Between Two Castles Essential Edition. All right, the quick overview is that we're trying to build out castles and we're sharing these castles between the players on the left and right. We're drafting these tiles, each one of the tiles is a different way to score or different way to collect things, uh different way to collect bonuses. We'll pick two of those tiles and then once everybody's done that, we'll flip the tiles back over and then share these tiles between the two castles. Whichever castle scores lowest between the two at the end of the game, that's going to be our personal score. So, it's competitive, but it's also a little bit cooperative as you work with the other two people. So, what do I like about this game? I like the artwork and I like the fact that it's it brings in it really does the Castles of Mad King uh Ludwig uh theme because of the way that the rooms give bonuses and the way that the rooms score. Uh you know, for instance, these blue tiles, you can only place them at the top of something because they're open air. Nothing can be built on top of them. I really like uh these little orange cards and you get these bonuses for building certain rooms and these give you a scoring method that you can use for you and your partner to kind of drive the rest of the game. I also like the line up in here. Essential Edition comes with these game trays and these game trays are just super easy to use because you pop them off. Uh the tiles are ready to go, pull out the stacks and then you put them all back. So, super
easy to set up, super easy to tear down. The miss for me is the fact that it's the cooperation between the two sides. Frankly, on one side or the other it's going to one person is going to kind of take the lead, otherwise the game kind of bogs down and so I found that the least interesting aspect of it, working with the two and that's essentially the hook of the game. All right, that's Between Two Castles Essential Edition. I love the theme. I'm not as high on the mechanics. Honestly, I don't really like the shared play between the left and right one. So, it's been kind of a miss for me every time I played it. I do I don't turn it down, I'll play it with other people when they want to play it and it is pretty popular when we play it at Southern Board Game Fest, but say the truth, it's a miss for me. But until next time, let's hear what Paul Gumbo has to say.
All right, it's time for our top 10 list. What do you think about that? I think that sounds tenable. Ten- tenable? Tenable. Tenable, yeah. Untenable.
Yeah. Yeah, tenable. I like that. Uh yeah. There's there's lots of words that we only use the un or anti version of. We don't really we don't really talk about like the the regular versions of them. Mhm. Yes, I'm I try to be gruntled all the time. Yeah, I try to be couth. How does it feel
Yep. to be gruntled? Pretty okay, really. Just satisfied, generally.
Uh hey, it's a top
uh regardless? Irregardless. No, don't say that again. Irregardless is tenable. Thanks, Mike. Uh hey, it's top 10 time. If you're not familiar with the top 10 list, what we do here is each of us has picked three picks, which leaves nine, which is bad math, so you, the audience, have to fill in for the number one answer here. So, go ahead and drop your answers to this top 10 topic in the chat, the top 10 most mispronounced game names. Great.
We already killed Eric in the beginning. We haven't even gotten to the first slide yet. Oh, that's good. That's a good Yeah, I would have chosen this but I've never even I've never even come close to seeing this game in the wild. I used to own it. I actually owned I think two copies of it, but one was incomplete, so Really? I had this one. Wait, did you buy a second copy to make the first one complete? I had a weird there was a weird issue with the first printing of the game where certain things were missing and so I ended up with extra pieces, something like that. Um but yeah, I I purchased this one when it was first out. Very nice, very nice. I know I I don't have that claim to fame. However, uh yeah, I do have a couple of good picks here, so I'm going to start with my number 10 pick. I will proceed around myself, then Eric, then Wendy.
Uh so, we're going to start off these games that I mispronounce or I hear a lot of other people mispronounce, certain co-workers and or bosses mispronounce.
Just I'm not picking on anybody in particular, right? But this is one that trips up everybody. It's also one of the
Municipium. Mhm. If you want to be proper If you want to be pinkies up proper, Municipium.
is that about? Nobody's called it that, I think, in the history of ever. Municipium.
What kind of accent do you put over a C to make it a cuh sound? Cuz if you want to make it an S sound, you can put the little like squiggly on there, yeah. Yeah. Uh a Latin accent, I would imagine. Yeah, I don't know.
it a K. No, Latin Latin's not all about that. They want to be as confusing as possible. So, yeah. So, uh Municipium, uh which I would never, literally in a thousand years, never have guessed that that's the correct way to pronounce it. Uh an old busted Reiner Knizia game reprinted by Bitewing, actually, as Sylos, which nobody can mess up. There you go. That's my number 10. All right. Nice. Uh I'm going to start with a uh it's a battle game card game called Gudnak. Um and the reason this is mispronounced is because the creators can't agree on how it's pronounced. So, there are multiple designers of this game. Um and uh one of them thinks it should be pronounced Gudnak and he wrote the rule book and so he said Gudnak, pronounced Gudnak, is blah blah blah. Uh the other designer thinks it should be pronounced Goodnak.
Um and when they displayed this game at PAX Unplugged, they printed banners on which both sides of the banner had conflicting pronunciations of the word. So, if you viewed the sign from one side, it said you say it Gudnak and on the other it says Goodnak. And I just recorded the audio book for There's an audio book of short stories in this world. I just recorded it. They told me to At first, they wanted to have me alternate it throughout the book. I couldn't do that, but I did read the entire book Gudnak, but then in the end credits I said Goodnak. So, this one's mispronounced because they want it that way. Gudnak, my number nine. It's on purpose.
I'm going to I'm going to I'm going to get a game published and we're going to print two different versions of the rules.
This is great. And then mix them in the boxes and whatever people get, they get.
Whatever you get, yeah. Oh my goodness, it could be anything. All right, uh mine my next one or my first one. So, when Chris and I were baby board game reviewers, we were just starting out with our podcast, uh we decided to review Teotihuacan and I worked really hard to be able to learn how to say Teotihuacan without struggling, without, you know, having any issue. Was very proud of myself. And then someone showed me a documentary where professionals who study Teotihuacan all the time pronounced it three different ways.
I was like Okay. Could be anything. Teotihuacan? Teotihuacan? I mean, to be fair, some of these professors, allegedly, were like British people. So, I don't really So, they're not allowed to pronounce things correctly? I don't I don't really expect British people to know the transliteration of a Spanish word from a from a a dialect. You know what I mean? Teotihuacan was an infinitely vast city of untapped knowledge. You know what I mean? Like it's I the same way that when I Uh we don't talk about Deutschland, right? Right, yeah, yeah, yeah. So, yeah, we butcher things, they butcher things. Everyone's allowed to butcher things. Butcher away, my friends. Yeah, that's what this list is all about, right? Yes. Te- Teotihuacan.
Teotihuacan. All right. Now, I guess it's uh I guess it's a back to me. So, uh because I think localized here in the United States, we are right next to a a very prominent Spanish-speaking country, Mexico, so I expect the fact that we have a proliferation of establishments like Taco Bells and Del Tacos and Tacos al Pastor, like all these places, I would expect that that more people that I've run into would know like basic Spanish rules, like the J makes an H sound, right? We don't say jalapenos. There's like that level of understanding.
There's that level of of expectation I have for people. Okay. So, when people say La Granja or La Granga, mhm, I I just If you're British, you have a pass, okay? If you're British and have a PhD, pronounce this however you like. If you're British If you're not British, but you put on a British accent just to say this game name, I also approve.
Gentle pass. That's true. That's true. Yeah. So, anyway, La Granja is just it's very simple. It's two syllables, Granja. One of them is just you just ha, all right? But I've heard this mispronounced and changed so many different ways, it's very perplexing to me. But once again, if you're British, you get a pass. There you go, that's my number seven. All right. That's the rule of the game. Um all right. Yeah, I mean this one gave me trouble as well. This this one What is the origin lingual origin? Is it Spanish or is it Portuguese? And I think that's where people had trouble. Oh, with La Granja. That This one's set in Spain. Okay, so La Granja. All right. That one Yeah, I remember having trouble. There was always discussion on on how to pronounce that one. Um this is an older title um Off Axia uh was a Spiel des Jahres winner. It's actually been redesigned as Lay Lines uh just recently. Um but this is a classic pick up and deliver game.
And uh for the longest time uh my my friends in the in my game group called it Off Arcs. And and sticking an R in there in in ways that uh there's no R in there. Um but Off Axia uh it's you know, German titles are tough to uh to jump into and so this one is just comedically one that I've heard mispronounced a number of times despite its prevalence in the board game world. You know, my maiden name, now that y'all can steal my bank account, uh my maiden name is Rosser and multiple times in my life people have added ends for no reason. So, they'd say Rossner. And I I don't know why and it's not just a single person. It's like this giant conspiracy. A lot of people add ends to my name as well. I got a lot of Sumners um around cuz you just can't They can't process the er er or the It just No.
To be fair, your name is Yeah. It's a It's a bit stuttery. It's Your name is awful. I'm sorry to have to be the first one to tell you. But really? Yeah, you probably should have changed it. You should have gone by like Winter. I mean, I my my my first radio job um wanted me to change it. I went as Eric Michaels for a long time um because they thought Summer was too difficult. What about What about Eric Knight? That'd be a really solid strong name. We got married. We wanted to change our
Knight? Then I could drive a cool talking car. Oh, you could. With a ghost in it. We got married. We wanted to change our last name to Dragon. Cuz that would be cool. And then we realized we had to go through like a whole legal process for that and gave up. Yeah. All right. Off Axia? Is that how it's pronounced? Off Axia. Yeah. All right. All right. Well, my second game is a Board & Dice game again because they pick the hardest pronounced names in the world. Uh so, Teotihuacan came out earlier this year. What Surprise. Teotihuacan came out earlier this year uh and I thought that was hard and then Thebe, pronounced like eBay, came out um and I definitely called it The Bye until Chris corrected me like eight times.
And then I made the connection with eBay and I was like, "Okay, I can remember this." That's only because we stopped by the Board & Dice booth and they're like, "It's pronounced like eBay." I was like, "That will be forever like locked in the noggin of useless information that I will never need." Also, I keep calling it Teotihuacan because I don't remember the the They both two games came out somewhat close together and it They're
They're set in different places though, right? Yes, the it is. But since I can't I don't know what either word is, it just becomes meh.
The AI vowel construction always confuses me depending on which language you're talking about and I've got authors that will insist that it's the incorrect pronunciation then I have to read a whole book with the incorrect version even though there's some like lingual scholar that will tell me I'm wrong. Uh that's fun. So, yeah, the I the AI and the EIs, I do not like those constructions. A E I O U and sometimes Y. Ooh, this is kind of a sad comment up here. For years I thought the author of The Witches was Ronald Dahl. Because they put an N in there. Yeah, I wrote is a weird name to be fair. Ronald Dahl. I see it. I understand. Yeah. Yeah.
Uh number four is coming from me and I I don't even know if I'm going to pronounce it. I'll just put this up here for your viewing pleasure. Um There you go. That's my number four pick. A game that you when you pronounce you must put the space in verbally.
Yes. I was like, "No, that's easy." I was about to just blurt it out.
Cape Cape Cod's Horn. Horn. Yes. Oh, what a beauty though.
All right. I have my my uh my other selection, my final selection, needs us to look back a little bit. Um for about a year or so, if you wanted to uh to track down the game that we know of now as Mysterium, you had to order from Portal Games uh and uh from overseas and and get their Polish version, uh which is Put it up on screen, Chris.
[clears throat]
That is Tajemnicze Domostwo. Um and for a year we had to try and pronounce this until somebody announced that they were going to call it Mysterium and um and I I think I ordered two or three copies of this because the shipping made more sense and then sold them to, you know, people once they got over here. Uh and this was the original version of Mysterium, but for the longest time put that in front of people and and ask them to pronounce it and you're going to come up with all sorts of interesting things to say and then Ignacy Trzewiczek will laugh at you. Did it have the same art cards? They changed I think I think it changed. I think the art is different. And so some people bought both versions and uh mixed them.
This game made such a splash. Like I forgot that people for a year were importing copies of it because it was so different. And uh Is that the name of the designer at the top, Eric? Uh I think the designers are on the right above the title. I don't know what that says up on top. Okay, that might be a phrase and that might be like uh yeah, explore the spooky mansion or something. Yeah. Oh, holy Once again, that's Tajemnicze Domostwo. Yeah, of course. Yeah, obviously. Yeah. All right, I'll pass [snorts] on mine.
Eric just wins. Eric wins. He does. He does. Uh so, I decided to pick the game that I thought was one of the hardest games pronounced. It's currently in the Dice Tower library and this is what I would call Schüttel's. Um is actually pronounced Schüttel's. Like shirtless with an uh with that little uh Is that called an umlaut? Yeah. The the the little uh The the dots over the Yeah, the dots over the U. Yeah, but I'm still going to call it Schüttel's. It looks like Schüttel's. Space shuttles. Space shuttles. Schüttel's. Huh, [clears throat] Schüttel's. Schüttel's. Okay.
Oh, man. Yeah, so this this one Yeah, I guess you're rolling uh little gnomes out of a cup. You're trying to roll a Schüttel out of a cup.
Yes. of gnomes out of a cup. Mhm. Right up there up top. So, it's a it's a gnome shuttle is what it is. That's what the cup is. Cuz you're dropping them off at the theme park that they're taking a shuttle to. Oh. But they don't all want to come out and go on the rides. Only seven of them. Specified number. I've never heard of this game before, but now I kind of know how to pronounce it. Um Okay, next time that you're down here, Eric, this is a game that you would love. It's like basically a stock market game and depending on how many of the pawns you roll out of the cup, like that's number active. So, you you want to spill out not all of them, not only one. Those are like bad and then everything else in between like bumps up the the value of these different companies you can invest in. It's ridiculous and I think that you would love it with every fiber of your being.
Okay. I'm excited now. All right, good. Yeah, yeah. Oh, there's so many good choices for the number one pick in the chat though. Y'all crushed it.
that I would pick. Which one is that? I think you might. Is it up on the screen right now?
it's up on the screen now. Ooh, um Is it Is it There's There's so many good ones. I'm going to have to go with
Yeah. this classic right here. Din Up review just went up of Down Up on the channel. What? Down Up.
[clears throat]
Din Up. Din Up. Din Up. Din Up. Din Up.
how you spell that.
Are you sure, Eric? I'm pretty sure. Oh. Yeah, so uh the the box uh the cover of this has Din Up right across the front and then like in little parentheses around this side like multiple place on the box it says pronounced Down Up. Like I'm sorry. That's just damage control. Because
Well, at least they were smart enough to add it to the box, you know. Yeah. Anyway, yeah, so Din Up will forever lives on in my heart. Neat game. It's actually it was originally called Revolve like the first edition of it from Japan because it's one of those card shedding games where you can flip the cards in your hand. They can revolve. So, I see what they're going for with the whole Down Up idea. I don't see what they were going for with the Din Up idea.
But [snorts] Yep. So many many many many
Crusoe on on my list cuz everybody wants to put an extra A in there. Robinson Crusoe versus Caruso. Oh, yeah. There There's a famous actor and they're like a or uh David Caruso. David Caruso, yeah. Maybe that's why. David Carnuso. Put an Put an N in there for good measure there. Yeah, we need more Ns in words. There is so There's so many good ones in the live chat. I had to give the nod to that. So, thank you for that. Uh we let's jump to another contributor here and then we'll be back with a game show as led by Wendy.
Hey, let's talk about a weeknight game. This one is really interesting in that it is nothing like the game it's based off of. It is absolutely an abstract game with very uh pretty artwork and production, but nothing like the base game. And this is Flamecraft Duels. I honestly wish they probably wouldn't have called it Flamecraft, maybe like Flame Duels or something like that would make more sense to me um because I don't think this one is anything like a two-player version of Flamecraft. This is a straight abstract game. This could be played you know, if you if this was part of like the line of games like uh like um Yinsh or Dvonn, that kind of like I don't think anybody would have batted an eye if this was in that series with just [snorts] colored chips and a hex board. Nobody would have thought anything of it. But anyway, Flamecraft Duels is delightful. This is a two-player, like I said, abstract game with really cool production. The box opens up and it becomes the board right here. You can open up the different storage containers underneath and that's where all your pieces are being held.
And in this one you have uh all these different uh Flamecraft dragon kind of chips and you're going to put pick one out, put it on the board, do the action that it says. Some of them are going to allow you to manipulate the the different chips around the board. And you're trying to get different patterns there. And once you get those patterns, you can score a card and then you pick up a new one. You try to score as many cards as you can before the end of the game. It's got really great PVC cards with some crazy like metal clasp on it. Like the whole thing is overproduced, but it may it just brings to the uh it brings so much to the occasion when you're playing this game. I like this one uh tremendously. It's a really cool abstract game with really cool puzzlingness and thinkingness uh uh like connected with this just top-notch production. I think it's really great. So, Flamecraft Duels really nice, really cool, really fun.
All right, it is game show time. And I thought I would bust out the good old Rotten Tomatoes game. So, this is a game kind of like Timeline where you want to put stuff in order, but instead of putting it in uh time order, you're putting it in movie order based on the Rotten Tomatoes scores. Really? At the time that this was printed cuz I Oh crap, I just dropped all a lot of cards. Um yeah, I assume at the time this was printed cuz those scores change a little bit here and there. Um but we are going to go for critical score and instead of having like 10 cards spread out cuz you all can't see that, uh we're just going to play a higher or lower. So, I am going to uh read off one card and then another and you're going to tell me if it is higher or lower. So, So, this is the starting line right here. Is it the starting line right here? We're going to start with Eric as our first contestant.
Um also, I should probably have a way to keep score. Here we go. I I don't expect these numbers to get astronomical.
It matters. It matters. I can't remember anything. Are you doing uh 17 points per correct answer? Uh no, we're doing one point per correct answer. Fine. All right. The first movie is Wedding Crashers from 2005. 10 men or sorry, two men who show up on uninvited to a party and seduce vulnerable women at wedding celebrations consider changing their ways when one of them falls in love. It's Shakespeare all over again. Now, the question is, Eric, is Transformers from 2007 a scatterbrained young man is thrust into an intergalactic civil war when sentient shapeshifting robots from space come knocking on his door for an important artifact in his possession. Is Transformers higher or lower than Wedding Crashers?
All right, so is this complete aggregate or is this the uh the critic score?
This is the critic score. Oh boy. Um so, I don't think critics liked Transformers, although many would argue it is the best of the whole mess. Uh I I think that Transformers has a lower critic score than Wedding Crashers. You are correct. Wedding Crashers had a 75% so it was certified fresh, whereas Transformers had a 58. Eric gets one point which I will write down on my spreadsheet. It's not even a spreadsheet. It's just a notes. All right, Chris, you ready for this?
All right, so you're doing two cards at me again or what?
Two cards at you again.
All right, here we go. The first movie is a classic. This is Flubber from 1997. Higher. A brilliant but scatterbrained scientist invents an implausibly bouncy substance that soon causes all manner of madcap hijinks at the college where he works. Are there madcap scientists in all of these selections? Is that Uh there are. Oh no. But only ones with hijinks. My favorite part is when when Robin Williams' crazy professor shows up in Wedding Crashers and he he bounces through and he slam dunks the ball from half court. Nice. What a good scene in Wedding Crashers.
All right. All right. Uh the next one is Inception. So,
Higher. is Inception
That was easy.
I'm still going to read it. A master thief who can steal ideas and secrets from people's dreams must outdo himself and figure out a way to plant an idea in another subconscious. Madcap science, baby.
correct, Chris. Inception is an 87% versus a 24. Uh you got that point. Yes. All right, Eric. Let's see. Are yours going to be really easy? All right. Your first movie is The Bonfire of the Vanities from 1990. A hard-drinking journalist in ignites a scandal in New York City by reporting on a hit-and-run perpetrated by a Wall Street fat cat and his mistress. Wow. I So, I've never seen this movie um but I just imagine it's the uh it's the beach party scene from The Karate Kid. That's all I think of. I think that's the entire movie is that they're having a bonfire and that that's the movie. So, extended it out or over and over again?
Like reliving the experience. [clears throat]
just all the the entire movie takes place during the beach party scene at of The Karate Kid. In the background you see the bonfire and you see All right. The The movie that is going to be either higher or lower is Baby Geniuses from 1999. When a one-year-old genius is kidnapped by evil scientists, he must escape and rally the help of other infant prodigies to free more captive babies. Is Baby Geniuses higher or lower than The Bonfire of the Vanities? Baby Geniuses uh has a lower score than The Bonfire of the Vanities.
Yes, it does. So, The Bonfire Vanities had a 16% and yet Baby Geniuses only had a two.
All right, Chris. No. Oh, when I tossed one out. I don't know how bad a disparity this one must have been. All right. All right. I thought she was stacking the deck. I thought that these were curated No, they were not. They were random. All right, Chris. Problem Child 2. Problem Child 2. You get Daddy Day Camp from 2007. This has Cuba or Cuba Gooding Jr. and Lochlyn Mu- Munro? Mun- Munro? Throw in Throw in a stick an N in there, yeah, just be sure.
Munronen. Wait, does this one have Eddie Murphy or no? Is he's not listed.
No. So, Daddy Day Camp from 2007, the owners of of a successful daycare purchase the summer camp they attended as kids and attempt to make it as wonderful as it was in their youth. Is this a cheap cool of Daddy Day Care? All right, continue.
is or the second movie is The Boondock Saints from 1999. In Boston, twin brothers believe God has called them to deliver vigilante justice to the gangsters who have ruined the city and they set about doing his will. Boston. That one's higher. Higher.
Higher, I say. Always higher. The Boondock Saints at 27%, Daddy Day Camp at one.
Boondock Saints only has 27%.
Yeah, I'm actually surprised at some of these low scores on on what I would consider [clears throat] critically, you know, acclaimed films. I mean, The Boondock Saints has Willem Dafoe in it. How could it go wrong?
No, it has a 91 audience though. Clearly, people like that movie. You guys are amazing at this game. Two points each, right? All right. I'm not doing that one. Come on, Beverly Hills Chihuahua. Beverly Hills Chihuahua.
All right, Eric. You get The Devil Wears Prada which he uh a number two is coming out for this actually. From 2006, a college grad gets hired as an assistant to the most powerful woman in fashion, but her icy new boss's demanding nature and cutting personality put her commitment to the test. Okay. Okay. Okay.
Versus Bring It On from 2000. A successful cheerleading squad's new captain faces a dilemma when she realizes her predecessor stole their award-winning routine from a hip-hop dance team. If Eric gets this one wrong, do I get to steal?
I I mean Which one is higher, Eric? Bring It On or Devil Wears
a little trickier because I feel like Bring It On was relatively enthusiastically celebrated when it first came out. Um and I don't remember what the critical response to The Devil Wears Prada was. I have I'm going to say uh Bring It On is going to be lower than Prada. You were correct, Eric. The Devil Wears Prada was 75% certified fresh, whereas Bring It On was only a 64. Mhm. Not better than Nintendo Prada. That was a close one.
All right. Yeah. Let's see.
DJ Dan makes a great point. Yeah, it's It can't be bad, right? They made a sequel to it. They wouldn't make a sequel to a bad movie. Who would do that?
Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2. Yeah, not Daddy Day Camp, which I looked it up is in fact a sequel to Daddy Day Camp. There you go. Yeah, they couldn't even get back uh Eddie Murphy for it.
Maybe he's on there, he just wasn't credited. They just use like cut scenes from the previous movie of him. They just shoot him from the back and it's it's all just they just react to his character. Yeah. Yeah, exactly. All right, Chris. Your movie from 1979 is Alien, the classic. In 2122, the crew of a salvaging spacecraft investigates a distress call and ends up unleashing a nightmarish organism that imperils them all. Imperils? Imperils them all, yeah. Unimperils. Versus Captain America: The First Avenger from 2011. Oh, I heard
Avenger, not adventure.
Okay, yeah. I was like, wait, that's a knockoff. Yeah, I was like, who is It's not the cart- or not some cartoon spin-off. Not like the '90s Roger Corman, you know, Flametastic 4. As World War II rages, a scrawny military reject gets his chance to fight the Nazi the Nazi scourge when he's accepted into an experimental super soldier program. That is a summary of that movie. All right, so the
Alien versus Captain America: The First Avenger. I mean, I know who'd win in a fight, but it's cuz Cap is undefeated. No cap. Um I'm going to say that Captain America: The First Avenger is lower critically than Alien. He is lower. So, Captain America got a 79, which is a good score, but Alien has a 98%. Yeah. It's a nigh perfect movie in many many
it nigh perfect, yeah. Yeah.
All right, for all the brownie points. You're beautiful today. Last round.
Oh, that not that type of brownie points.
We're going to have three movies Oh. that you have to put in order now. Eric, this changes the game. This is the changes it up by 50%. [clears throat] So, did you know that in the Rotten Tomatoes box, the Rotten Tomatoes, sorry, uh there is I think four different game modes where you can uh order them like in timeline by critical rating or by audience rating or by year they came out or you can read the description and you have to try to guess what the movie is. Okay. Because they have all these blurbs on there. It's a
[clears throat]
It's a surprisingly fun game. I really like this one actually.
It is. Sorry.
The Rotten Tomatoes? Trying to find [snorts] some good ones together. All right. Wendy's just trying to make this as difficult as possible.
She's looking for Problem Child 2. Trying to do one that you guys can do together. I keep drawing wild cards. Here we go. This is perfect.
Wild. It's a It's a game mechanic thing. Sure.
everybody can hop in on your turn. So, this this We're going to do three in a row. Okay. And Eric and Chris are both going to separately give their guesses. Ooh.
Oh, do we have to write it down? Sure. Sounds fair. Wait, this is the part you're unsure about writing down, but three points, you're like, I got to I got to get my notepad out for this. I have a trouble memory. I mean, what if you guys got a lot wrong? Then I would have really struggled. All right. The first game it first movie is Waterworld from 1995. Beautiful. A post-apocalyptic Earth is covered by a global ocean, leaving the few humans left on the planet to battle for scarce resources and search for the mystical island of dry land. Ooh. Really hope these are all water movies. Let the next one be Waterboy. The next one is National Treasure from 2004. Ooh.
In search of a treasure hidden by the founding fathers, a historian steals the Declaration of Independence and sets off on a scavenger hunt for the ages. They did do a sequel to that.
And the last one is Twilight from 2008. Oh. A teenage girl moves to a new town and falls in love with a brooding vampire. That's all you get from that one. That's a very short synopsis. Oh, no.
All right, we want This is delightfully devilish, Wendy.
Lowest to highest. What is your order? Lowest to highest. All right, Eric. Oh, DJ Dan is invoking the Super Mario Brothers movie, the old school one from the '90s I'm I'm assuming, right? I'm assuming.
All right, I I've I've locked in my answer. I too have locked in my answer. All right. Do you want to hear the answers before
that happen in Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? All right, Eric. What is your order? So, I said that the highest ranked is uh National Treasure. Um I think that there's enough there that people, despite the ridiculous premise, that that some people enjoyed it as an action movie. I'm going to make Waterworld number two. I know it's it's great to say it's the worst movie ever made, but I think there's somebody in that pool of critics that was like, I I appreciated the um the composition of some of this stuff. And then Twilight's number three because it's just objectively bad. Okay, and you, Chris? I am going for a a wild one here. I think that going for Should I follow Eric's best to worst?
Sure. All right. I think that there is an unfair bias against Nick Cage. So, I'm going to say that the highest ranked of the movies was Twilight. The second middle one was National Treasure and the bottom one's Waterworld cuz that's where it belongs. Well, Eric, you were wrong and Chris is right actually. You got all three in a row.
Very impressed. Yes. I can't believe that Twilight beat National Treasure. I genuinely thought that was a good movie. National Treasure? Yeah. It's I liked it. It was so fun.
I love that movie. I'm not going to say it's a good movie.
It was an absurd premise, I think. Yeah. It deserves more than a 46. What did What cuz the What were the
scores were Waterworld was 45. National Treasure was 46. Oh. And then Twilight was 49.
Okay. You know what I mean? Like National Treasure is not right next to Waterworld. No, come on. Unfair Nick Cage bias, I'm calling it out now, Hollywood. Go repent yourself in sackcloth and ashes.
three more points. Oh, man. All right.
well, that's Rotten Tomatoes-ish. And And who won that one? I I could I couldn't keep track of all the points. Chris won the game. You won the game. I don't know. I didn't write down the last points, so I I don't remember. I guess it's a tie. All right. Well, awesome. Thanks for running that. Rotten Tomatoes, fun game. Worth checking out. Um like I said, uh come back tomorrow morning where we'll be doing Zombicide: Dead Men Tales. Come back uh Wednesday for all of our live shows, Thursday and everything, but Thursday special you'll get to hear more of from Eric as he pronounces designer and artist and publisher names from around the world for the Dice Tower Awards.
