How this game feels to play
Description

It is a time of unrest in 1920s Europa. The ashes from the first great war still darken the snow. The capitalistic city-state known simply as “The Factory”, which fueled the war with heavily armored mechs, has closed its doors, drawing the attention of several nearby countries.

Scythe is an engine-building game set in a 1920s era, alternate-history. It is a time of farming and war, broken hearts and rusted gears, innovation and valor. In Scythe, each player controls one of five factions of Eastern Europe, all of which are attempting to earn their fortunes and claim their stakes in the land around the mysterious Factory. Players conquer territory, enlist new recruits, reap resources, gain villagers, build structures, and activate monstrous mechs.

Each player begins the game with different resources (power, coins, combat acumen, and popularity), a different starting location, and a hidden goal. Starting positions are specially calibrated to contribute to each faction’s uniqueness and the asymmetrical nature of the game (each faction always starts in the same place). Scythe uses a streamlined action-selection mechanism (no rounds or phases) to keep gameplay moving at a brisk pace and reduce downtime between turns. While there is plenty of direct conflict for players who seek it, there is no player elimination.

Scythe gives players almost complete control over their fate. Other than each player’s individual hidden objective card, the only elements of luck or variability are “encounter” cards that players will draw as they interact with the citizens of newly explored lands. Each encounter card provides the player with several options, allowing them to mitigate the luck of the draw through their selection. Combat is also driven by choices, not luck or randomness. Every part of Scythe has an aspect of engine-building to it. Players can upgrade actions to become more efficient, build structures that improve their position on the map, enlist new recruits to enhance character abilities, activate mechs to deter opponents from invading, and expand their borders to reap greater types and quantities of resources. These engine-building aspects create a sense of momentum and progress throughout the game. The order in which players improve their engines adds to the unique feel of each game, even if having played one faction multiple times.

Quotes (from this video)
  • King of Tokyo is having a new version.
  • Wingspan now will fit your pocket and
  • Scythe. Oh boy, you can't imagine what will happen with Scythe.
  • The hottest board games out there right now like a civilization game that will be super streamlined and good.
  • To talk about the Jewel game first, we have to check Scythe and Expeditions because the Jewel game is kind of mixture of both of these.
  • It's a two-player board game where one player will play there with the rules of Scythe and the other player will play Expeditions rules and they fight with each other.
  • This sounds really exciting. How exciting? Let's rank it.
  • To be honest, this has really made me want to play Scythe now. So I am excited.
  • In King of Tokyo, you are trying to be the best monster possible.
  • This is right up Yiannis's alley.
  • So, this one goes here. Whoop.
  • The third place goes to -60°, which is a heavy heavy Eurogame, and we don't have much information about it.
  • Gray Loon takes us back into medieval times and this board game looks gorgeous and promises us two things.
  • It's generally a mechanical Eurogame, which is not bad at all.
  • And this time, the top step goes to Time Span, which is a streamlined civilization game that looks gorgeous.
  • It's highly worried because of those asymmetric powers and things and it's simultaneous, which means that uh you basically will play at the same time most of the game so it's much quicker.
  • So these were the hottest board games of the month. What do you think? Which one of these are you the most excited to try?
  • Remember to support the channel cuz that's how we can do all this research, spend time in making that lovely presentation and uh not remembering all the names of the games and people and so on.

  • Hell of a deal. Hell of a deal.
  • I want to upgrade everything, as you know, because I I have a terrible problem making everything deluxified.
  • So, I'm going to get the metal next. I'm going to get these action tokens for Scythe.
  • This one was really funny because it's a one versus many one person is this creature because you crash landed onto a planet.
  • I honestly really wanted because I just saw the cover art and I'm like, 'Wow, this is this is beautiful.'
  • This one is a cooperative poker game where you are playing against the devil along with like different bosses and everything and it is a co-op, but still I think it'd be really fun.
  • So, I've been looking for a lot of different solo games. I think I got more way more than I was expecting.
  • Gen Con this year was next level. The booths were insane. I feel like everyone leveled up their production for the booth overall.

Quotes (from this video)
  • And I love that we talk about everything but games when we start the show that makes me so happy not talking about games just talking about everything else
  • And then when we finished we felt that great shame and the pain in the belly and it was wonderful.
  • Overall topic that I was thinking about today. So, I had game night this past Wednesday.
  • And I realized as I was teaching Orton's story that I I really appreciate and I really love expansions that seamlessly integrate with the core game so that you can teach it to anyone
  • Should we call those plug-and-play expansions? They seem like they're plug and play.
  • On the surface, you think you're bringing in just a new character, same rule set. Uh, you play the game the same. the the turn order is exact exactly the same, but it gets a little complicated when you're bringing in new characters to Dice Throne
  • But it is it is nice when a game already works pretty darn well and you're just adding more cards in there and more tiles.
  • And I think it's worth if you're if you're a designer or a publisher uh listening, I think there's there's value in that.
  • So, the board game designer you'd most like to collaborate with and haven't had a chance to collaborate with.
  • Um, but I think I have to go with Vantage because Vantage is kind of the culmination of some of the things that I've talked about here. It was it's the most passion project of all of my passion projects.
  • If your body could magically handle playing hockey right now and you had the chance to play hockey for a year and just go and and travel and do that and all the things that come with it, would you would you choose to do that at this point in your life?
  • Of all the podcasts that you've hosted, not been a guest on or listened to, but of all the podcasts that you've hosted on a weekly basis that have lasted for more than 60 episodes, who's your favorite co-host?

Quotes (from this video)
  • Basically, I think this is the third maybe fourth. I think it's the fourth time I've done a top 10 overrated games list, hence more. And I called it you have been warned.
  • But actually, surprisingly, despite somebody sharing it on Facebook, which I was not happy about really, cuz I mean I I don't know. I I like my content being shared on Facebook and I do say do it, but that list is a dangerous one to put on Facebook because, you know, we do have this problem in the hobby of toxic positivity.
  • No, shut off. It is really is not. I'm doing it because I enjoy it.
  • There's certainly examples of this you see in real life and it's just gez, how closed is your bubble that you have to think that that argument still works?
  • Do not be misled thinking that you look at this game and it's going to be a charming little farming game. It is everything but.
  • This game isn't really a game about cultivating roses. This is a game about debt management.
  • This game is multiplayer solitaire through and through.
  • This is a solo puzzle.
  • Hated this.
  • The hobby has become very elitist and very clicky.
  • Shame on you if you do it.
  • If you are done with the table and you're not playing something next, then get off the freaking table and let someone else use it. Honestly, it is selfish and irresponsible.
  • If you are the sort of people who leave your games on a table for hours on end just to hog the table and stop anybody else playing on it. And you essentially don't return to the table for hours on end. [...] If you're doing that to gaming tables, then shame on you.
  • For a hobby that is meant to be about, oh, let's be inclusive and let's uh get new people in and stuff like that, it doesn't half do a pretty damn good job of excluding a lot and, you know, being very elitist.
  • It's not a good feeling and it is something that is hurting, you know, conventions in general and I think that's the biggest reason that conventions sometimes don't work.

  • We sat down to play that game hole holy cow we were literally passing a hat Vil around the table for how much thinking you had to put into that game that surprised me
  • this game London when we first saw it at Gen Con when Oscar green said hey guys scream hey come take a look at this
  • the cover of the game box and how plain it is but mm-hmm it really some reason fits this game it just looks nice the cover looks elegant and the art is really good and then you actually get into the game and you find this really elegant cool little card game
  • engineers it was really cool cuz it's kind of math because you had to like the little algebraic problems you have to solve but it's such a great thing of a dice manipulation game plus the area control game plus a set collection game all merged into one that's one of those I really got to the table a lot in 2017
  • and Tony this was actually one of the early games in 2017 that really grabbed us one of those that didn't look that great on the table but then you start playing in and it's one of those that we just played over and over and over again and just just really enjoyed it
  • that rule about when that third dragon comes out yes everything stops correct I kept saying it and kept saying it and reminding people boy we had a flip the table moment when that occurred
  • oh die another seaman without miniatures look at that
  • two seam on one two squirrely Awards and neither games had merci ya don't have to put miniatures in the game to make it go no you don't lure in DOS so good
  • it's what I call the reverse work replacement where you're taking stuff off the board and putting it on your board in order to activate things I just thought was a really unique mechanic
  • and again tony is one of those shockers for us at the beginning year I had never heard of gentes and we got an early copy and try to try it out and it blew us away

  • I love looking at empirical cells data whether it be for movies or comic books or albums it doesn't matter I like seeing what the top sellers are
  • those four games have been around for quite a while which goes to show that either one people in this hobby are still buying those games or hopefully hopefully people are coming into the hobby and those are those gateway games that everybody recommends for people to check out
  • evergreen as' I just made that term up
  • it doesn't matter how often they refresh that game it's always a fantastic seller thing is though I bet it drops out of the top ten in the next quarter
  • so to have this game that is a hundred bucks still continue to sell well quarter after quarter year after year is just a testament to how popular that game is
  • exploding kicking kicking exploding chickens now that would be funny
  • now when I first saw Dominion on this list I thought wait a minute that should be a board game but I guess when you really think about it it's nothing but cards 100% card game

  • Pap, you still haven't received your Tekkaido that you backed at a pretty high amount because you got your own character in the game.
  • It's funny. We we talked about that at some point. Just like the humor, like the humor of doing something like a pep talks where I would talk about, you know, like some advice for particular games and it's something I like that. I like that. I love that idea of a pep talk.
  • Rebel Mage here uh, left a message just said, "Pep, just want to say you're a great co-host for watching play. Keep up the good work."
  • For me, it's probably going to be Star Realms. Star Realms is very high on here as well for me. Um, but I kind of want to skip that just because of how repeatable Star Realms is anyway. And I'm going to go to Sheriff of Nottingham.
  • Uh, this is self- serving, but I would dress up as a Mounty and be my character from the Dead of Winter promo that's in the fundraiser.
  • I'd want to find something I already look like and kind of like I wouldn't just go as my favorite character. I'd go as a character that I think I that I could that I could best look even kind of naturally almost, right?
  • Yes, we talk about it somewhat frequently actually. Like, oh, we should probably cover some of the old older classics. Yeah, cuz there are still people today who pick up those games and and want to uh learn how to play them, right?
  • Every game. But the one that always comes to mind for me is uh Pathfinder and any game that's kind of trying to do what the Pathfinder adventure card game is doing because in that game whenever you level up and complete missions, you get like draw a random item out of the box or do this or do that.
  • Like Seall has something similar to that. They have an emnity thing. If you attack someone then they remember that other players remember that in in the game's mechanics and then that comes back to haunt you later or whatever.
  • The whole idea of under Mountain is like it's constantly shifting and like it's the surroundings are changing. So every time you go down, things will be a little different anyway. So it' be really cool to make like a legacy style dungeon exploring thing around the end of that naturally.

  • I really enjoy I look big conventions are fun they're exciting yeah small conventions yeah I just do now I agree
  • I love deck builders it's probably one of my favorite types but eventually unless you're adding a very new mechanic it does just become like when I walking by the market yeah buy the most expensive card that's available pick up cards that let you draw more cards like it's cold

Pros
  • Not an isolated game; you have to respond to opponents and evolving circumstances
  • Emphasis on building an engine via bottom-row actions
  • Five workers is highlighted as a sweet spot (practically common in play)

  • hello and welcome to games that left my collection in 2018 this is a list of 10 games I've gotten rid of over the last year or so
  • not every game needs to stay in your collection especially not if you found a game that does much the same thing only a lot better for you
  • I don't have to be the one that owns everything I don't have to be the person in the group that owns every single game other people can own games and I can borrow them off them that's fine that's great
  • it's actually quite neat for other people in your group to go actually this is the game I want to own I want to add this to my shelf and for you to go cool you you get that one that's awesome I don't need every single game
  • the app absolutely killed my interest in playing this as a solo on the tabletop or as a multiplayer game
  • all I could think was this is an improved version of Arkham Horror wow I must be totally out of line with what everyone else is thinking because I'm not enjoying this at all
  • it really bugs me when the optimal way to play someone is so utterly boring
  • one thing that drove me up the wall was when a character would be at one location discover a clue but then anyone could act on it so if you were on the opposite side of the map you could go and complete that assignment and it just didn't make any sense to me
  • Foreclosed is just rubbish
  • you either have to play down so people can learn the game or you play your ability and people just get stomped
  • it's just because the groups I play with if they want that hidden Trader experience they're going to play Battle Star Galactica and shadows of Camelot just occupied much of the same space
  • no game is for everyone and Through the Ages is not for me
  • it's just such a time consumer there's so much fiddling around with cubes and the game just has a heck of a lot of downtime when it's someone else's turn
  • my only real regret with this one is that I got rid of it just before I started the channel because despite my reservations with the game I think it's one that would do quite well as a 3-minute recap

  • This is by a company called Splotter, a European company that makes a very very heavy strategy games, and they're known for it.
  • They even advertise, you see, on the front: "100% dice-free!"

  • Painting is not my medium AT ALL. i'm no good with it i prefer markers... i prefer pixels, really, to paint with.
  • The things that i would like to paint, if i were able to paint, go in this order, i think, of preference: first, the little items in Tiny Epic Quest.
  • The drawback that i heard is that you get all these different colours of paint, but the one that's missing is red.
  • i WAS worried as i was applying this darker colour that i was sort of muddying up the model and it was looking a little too dingy, but i guess this is the step that corrects that.
  • Figure painting is not for people with bad eyesight. It's not for people with Parkinson's or arthritis in their hands. It's not for people prone to seizures, or people who have just had multiple cans of Dr. Pepper, like i have.
  • i think i may have caught the bug, and i think that this book and this product has given me enough confidence...

Quotes (from this video)
  • Because that's not the point of this video AT ALL.
  • So this is why i got a few new pieces of gear, because i'm able to do this stuff just talking right at you, and then if i want to switch cameras, check this out: i push a button...
  • If you'll allow me to suck at something, i really appreciate it.
  • The person who drove me to do all this is a fellow named Rahdo.
  • It enables him to do live to tape runthroughs with absolutely no editing, which is wonderful.
  • The interesting thing is... ..... DUHHHHHHH for, like, fifteen minutes!
  • So this is Scythe: The Wind Gambit, and a very... it makes me sad, because just before the pandemic hit, and everything was was shut down here in Ontario, i've been playing Scythe with my dear friends Derek and Emily, and we started into the Rise of Fenris campaign, which is a story-based campaign that you go through in steps, that you add to your Scythe game.
  • All it is, is - i think - just five or six different plastic airships, and i think a couple of cards that change the way the end of the game works.
  • So the airships can carry stuff around, and they can affect combat.
  • That's pretty cool.
  • It's pretty exciting.
  • More lovely artwork.
  • You know, one of the biggest reasons to buy this game, of course, is the artwork.
  • Unique faction ships, one mold.
  • Oh well.
  • That's fine.
  • i'm not too burned about that.
  • They're cool... they're cool, though.
  • i think that's a brilliant solution ,and i'm working on it!
  • It's coming!
  • So! Let me read this to you anyway.
  • Bombard: before you engage in combat on your airship' territory you may pay 1/2/3 resources from this airship to reduce your opponent's power by 1/2/3.
  • Xheck your dictionary, fellas!
  • Ryan sweats buckets when he's out of his comfort zone.
  • You guys made this fancy new gear possible.
  • i'm excited to keep using it, to get more stuff, and to do exciting new forms of content for you!
  • And i'm very excited to not have to edit this piece!
