Description

Wingspan is a competitive, medium-weight, card-driven, engine-building board game from Stonemaier Games. It's designed by Elizabeth Hargrave and features 180 birds illustrated by Natalia Rojas and Ana Maria Martinez.

You are bird enthusiasts—researchers, bird watchers, ornithologists, and collectors—seeking to discover and attract the best birds to your network of wildlife preserves. Each bird extends a chain of powerful combinations in one of your habitats (actions). These habitats focus on several key aspects of growth:

Gain food tokens via custom dice in a birdfeeder dice tower
Lay eggs using egg miniatures in a variety of colors
Draw from hundreds of unique bird cards and play them

The winner is the player with the most points after 4 rounds.

—description from the publisher

From the 7th printing on, the base game box includes Wingspan: Swift-Start Promo Pack.

Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • action selection — It's really straightforward what you're doing on a turn and you're just taking that one action. So every time it's your turn, you're just taking one action.
  • Area Control — Fish want to eat other fish and so you have to play them on top of smaller fish so that way they can eat these smaller fish and sustain themselves that way.
  • Card Play — When you have a hand of cards, you're going to play these fish out on this board and then some fish are going to cost cards from your hand to discard.
  • Resource Management — You're going to discard cards from your hand to pay for them. You also have these fish eggs that you're laying all over the board. Some cost sometimes you'll have to pay a fish or pay an egg in order to play some of these fish.
  • scoring — Each round you're going to have kind of a special scoring parameter and then ultimately at the end of the game some fish have some extra special scoring parameters as well. You might kind of in addition to your overarching strategy, you might, you know, this round in particular, I'm going to really push the eggs. I'm really going to push the the the young fish or I'm going to really push having fish in the the top section in the, you know, the sunny portion of the board, whatever the case is. So, I like how you have these short-term goals and you have long-term goals and they're both kind of playing together to get you points throughout the game.
  • Set Collection — Each fish has inherent value, but also all of your eggs, your young fish or schools of fish and just your fish cards. All this stuff is going to play out into your points.
  • Token conversion — You can take an action to hatch them all. So then you have hatching little young fish and then you can kind of move those little young fish all the way around the board. If you were able ever able to move three of those young fish all into the same spot in the same board or on your board on the same spot. If you're able to get three in the same time, the same area, they turn into a school of fish. And school of fish are worth more points.
  • Worker Placement — You have all the workers, they're gone, the round's over, you score, you go again.

  • I just really liked all the graphic design choices because it made it super easy for me as a gamer to play the game.

Quotes (from this video)
  • We are a community full of people with maxed out credit cards cuz the next addictive board game on the shelf just needed to be purchased even though we haven't played the last dozen that came in or because we've backed 20 not realizing that they're all going to arrive in about a year and uh our satiation for brand new boxes is going to slow down in between then and now.
  • We're not the same industry that existed before the pandemic. An industry when crowdfunding was a dream that publishers could use to make things happen.
  • We're not the same community. We're more hesitant, more cautious. we are more skeptical of crowdfunding projects that don't have history and age behind them.
  • I'm hopeful and also concerned. I'm hopeful cuz I want to believe in what this space is and and what our hobby space has always been for me. A place to connect, a place to discover new worlds and go on adventures and spend time with friends, a place to heal from the impact and disruption that technology adds into our lives that social media um seeps into our very soul.
  • Get out and play some games.

Quotes (from this video)
  • Finsspan is a sequel to Wingspan
  • But unlike that you dive all the way down to the bottom every time and that has meaning in fins spin because you get a little bonus the first time each round you get to the bottom of the dive site.
  • This is a living ocean mat of uh of of young and eggs.
  • Finsspan does something somewhat special in that it has a vertical requirement on some fish and it has a horizontal requirement on other fish.
  • Finsspan is built around positive player interaction.
  • It really encourages me to lean into the predator strategy if I do that.
  • One of the distinctive features in Finsspan is how it brings the the ocean to life, the waters to life because you are moving tokens around all the time.
  • I love the positive player interaction in Finsspan.

Quotes (from this video)
  • The best value games in my collection.
  • Value can be determined in a number of ways, right? Fun and experience is part of the value.
  • Value is not only experience though. It also has to be contrasted with time spent, how many plays, the general price point, how often has that divided.
  • It adds a little bit of judgment to the pile.
  • The respectable but still unplayed Shelf of Shame also probably shouldn't be brought with you.
  • It's usually their walkthrough into the board game space. It's usually their entry gate into the hobby.
  • This is a massive game requires a lot of time to teach. Twilight Imperium is one of those epic play once a year and it has earned its space.
  • Cockroach poker is a lovely little lying, bluffing, and betrayal game where there's only one loser.
  • I've probably got a better value for my dollar on this game than any other game in this collection just by sheer number of plays. Probably like a penny a play at this point.
  • Finsspan is here. It is fun. It is teachable. It plays so rapidly. and so fast.
  • Root is one of those legacy games, one of those games that defines a game group, has defined a long history of this channel, and has certainly defined my collection.
  • Terraforming Mars, Aries Expedition, one of the best value games in my collection by far.
  • Age of Steam is the cudigra. is the best in that category.
  • Crokinol is the Superman of the board game world.
  • If you're making a list video and you're titling it top 10, you got to include 14. We all know that's the way this works.

  • The Automa's beat me 3 to one in the forest, beating me 4 to2 in the grasslands, and I'm beating them four to three in the wetlands.
  • My last game I lost by a point and I didn't get even to the mid part, the middle, like lower part of my goal.
  • I win 96 to 91. All three of these have been super tight games with the Automa.
  • So, yeah, all these games I think my best score was 100 in the first one. I think I had 92 and 96.

  • This is the number two game that people have played that they want to play again.

  • One thing I think I'd like to mention is that I still think it's fairly unique that in Scythe, the resources that you earn, the the the wheat, the wood, the the ore, the oil, that they are all kept on the board itself.
  • I love the interactions that happen here. It's one of my favorite types of interactions in games.
  • I think what I will say is uh I'm kind of amazed that it uses such a clever dice selection mechanism. And I'm kind of amazed that other games haven't tried to use this.

Pros
  • Adds a playful hummingbird mechanic that fits the Wingspan theme
  • Modular integration with existing expansions for easy plug-and-play
  • Visually appealing components; smaller hummingbird cards fit the motif
  • Simple to learn and provides a new end-of-turn decision point
Cons
  • Does not radically alter core strategy; more of a bonus layer
  • Adds many new cards, which can contribute to storage/setup challenges
  • Not essential for players who are satisfied with base Wingspan
Thematic elements
  • Bird habitat management and nectar economy via hummingbird mechanics
  • Bird sanctuary across North America, South America, Mexico, and the Caribbean
  • expansion overview/review
Comparison games
none
Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • end-of-turn hummingbird action — After performing a main action (gain food, lay eggs, draw bird cards), you end your turn by taking a hummingbird action to attract or recall hummingbirds and activate abilities shown on the bottom-left of the hummingbird cards.
  • hummingbird track and activation — Hummingbirds can be attracted to spaces or recalled; moving on the hummingbird track can trigger additional hummingbird actions and affects end-of-game scoring based on track position.
  • new birds and nectar resources — 111 new bird cards representing North/South America, Mexico, and the Caribbean, plus 40 hummingbird cards, additional nectar tokens, and bonus cards.
  • overlay mats for hummingbirds — Double-sided mats overlay the first section of the board to create dedicated spaces for hummingbird entries; designed to be compatible with other Wingspan expansions.
  • Reclaim as Action — After performing a main action (gain food, lay eggs, draw bird cards), you end your turn by taking a hummingbird action to attract or recall hummingbirds and activate abilities shown on the bottom-left of the hummingbird cards.

Quotes (from this video)
  • I would almost call it a mini. I mean, I know it is an expansion, but it really does feel like a mini expansion.
  • I love these little hummingbirds and I thought that motion of constantly having them come and having them go. I thought that was really fun.
  • This hummingbird action really is kind of the heart and soul of this expansion.
  • If you've played Wingspan a lot, and you want just a little bit, a little kind of different thing to add on to the base game, then I think that this would appeal to you.
  • I don't think this is an essential expansion at all.
  • But I do love these little hummingbirds and I thought that was just a fun motion that was constantly happening with them.
  • Oceanana expansion works the best for me, and I would actually love to see something like that a little bit more.

  • So, I wrote a whole hour of stand-up comedy all about the world of board games and I've been doing it at conventions for the past few years, but I'm taking it on tour for the first time and I'm bringing it all over America both in 2026 and in 2027 and I'm doing it over four different legs.
  • But, I want this board game comedy tour to to feel special, to feel different.
  • Like there's never been a comedy tour at board game venues before.
  • This has never happened before. Nobody has ever been insane enough to do this before, so I don't know what to expect.
  • So, you know, this is also a note to say, "I need your help."
  • And, you know, that's one of the reasons I chose to do this in board game venues and board game stores.
  • Uh I'm trying to make it more about a show about board game culture.
  • And, you know, if you're hesitating to come out to this, I totally understand and there's no pressure, but once the comedy special comes out, I will not tour with this show anymore.
  • So, this is your opportunity to come see the show if you want to see it or, you know, it will be a special available to watch on your TV or computer or something like that later.
