Description

In the quiet village of Ravenswood Bluff, ‌a demon walks amongst you. During a hellish thunderstorm, on the stroke of midnight, there echoes a bone-chilling scream. The townsfolk rush to investigate and find the town storyteller murdered, their body impaled on the hands of the clocktower, blood dripping onto the cobblestones below. A Demon is on the loose, murdering by night and disguised in human form by day. Some have scraps of information. Others have abilities that fight the evil or protect the innocent. But the Demon and its evil minions are spreading lies to confuse and breed suspicion. Will the good townsfolk put the puzzle together in time to execute the true demon and save themselves? Or will evil overrun this once peaceful village?

Blood on the Clocktower is a bluffing game with players on opposing teams of Good and Evil, overseen by a Storyteller player who conducts the action and makes crucial decisions. The goal of the game is to successfully deduce and execute the demons before they outnumber the townfolk.

During a 'day' phase players socialize openly and whisper privately to trade knowledge or spread lies, culminating in a player's execution if a majority suspects them of being Evil. During a 'night' time, players close their eyes and are woken one at a time by the Storyteller to gather information, spread mischief, or kill.

The Storyteller uses the game's intricate playing pieces to guide each game, leaving others free to play without a table or board. Players stay in the thick of the action to the very end even if their characters are killed, haunting Ravenswood Bluff as ghosts trying to win from beyond the grave. If you arrive late to a game, you can enter after it's started as a powerful Traveller character with unusual talents and questionable allegiances. Each character comes with their own special ability and no two players in a game are ever the same character.

Quotes (from this video)
  • The betrayal mad.
  • Diplomacy isn't a game you spring on people. It's a game you forewarned them about.
  • You're not really playing a board game. You're playing a people game.
  • The game outwardly advertises that this would happen. It's on the box, not a game of kindness, sweeties, and happy Labradors.
  • The knife in your back feels that much sharper when you've spent six hours building a relationship only to spend the next two hours watching your former ally win with your land.
  • Betrayal is strategy. And if you sit down to play Diplomacy and suddenly you're shocked that someone lied to you, that's a failure of communication before the game even began.
  • The outplayed mad is weirdly respectful.
  • 4D chess, while you were playing checkers.

  • High replay potential due to numerous role configurations, bluffs, and faction interactions.

Thematic elements
  • Social deduction, deception, murder-mystery, supernatural factions
  • A supernatural town square with a storyteller guiding the game and residents who may be demon, minion, townsperson, or outsider—each with unique nighttime abilities and public/private information.

Pros
  • Rich, multi-layered role dynamics with a vibrant cast of characters that fosters deep strategic thinking and social play.
  • Clear, entertaining exposition of the Vizier variant and other new/minor roles (e.g., vizier, minions, leech) via live demonstration and explanation.
  • Energetic host-led presentation with witty banter and interactive audience engagement (private chats, in-game whispers, and vote dynamics).
  • High replayability due to numerous bluffing possibilities, role bluffs, and different host attribution strategies each game.
  • Strong emphasis on paranoia, misdirection, and team-building (or betrayal) through continuous information warfare.
Cons
  • Complex, dense rules and a large cast of roles, which can be difficult for new players to absorb without dedicated onboarding.
  • Reliance on players remembering multiple nights’ worth of information and potential bluff states; risk of information overload.
  • Some segments of the discussion can feel iterative or circuitous as players test hypotheses and debate loyalties, which may slow pacing for newcomers.
Thematic elements

  • day/night cycle and public voting — the game alternates night actions and daytime discussions culminating in public votes to execute a player; day actions are often public, night actions private or semi-private.
  • hidden roles with asymmetric powers — players are assigned distinct roles (townsfolk, demon/minions, and special characters) with unique abilities and win conditions that shape information flow and decisions.
  • king-centric information and choir/host dynamics — the King has a special information flow when dead-outnumbered scenarios arise; choir-boy dynamics and host/leechee interactions add layers of strategy.
  • private information and whispers — private chats and limited disclosure create opportunities for misdirection, whisper networks, and contested knowledge.
  • role revealed information and forced reveals — certain roles reveal information at opportune times; some powers force or influence how information is revealed or withheld.
