Description

America in the 19th century: You are a rancher and repeatedly herd your cattle from Texas to Kansas City, where you send them off by train. This earns you money and victory points. Needless to say, each time you arrive in Kansas City, you want to have your most valuable cattle in tow. However, the "Great Western Trail" not only requires that you keep your herd in good shape, but also that you wisely use the various buildings along the trail. Also, it might be a good idea to hire capable staff: cowboys to improve your herd, craftsmen to build your very own buildings, or engineers for the important railroad line.

If you cleverly manage your herd and navigate the opportunities and pitfalls of Great Western Trail, you surely will gain the most victory points and win the game.

  • I do. I'm very mean to my books.
  • I dogge earring all day.
  • I hate reading series that aren't done. It drives me crazy.
  • The library in this is true for a lot of libraries around has so much more stuff than you think.
  • So free. So free. So incredibly free.
  • The Dresden Files has been the bane of my existence cuz it's just been for like a decade plus now.

Quotes (from this video)
  • It is disrespectful of me to do something with my evenings.
  • There is a special circle of hell for people who show up to a graduation with an air horn.
  • I really appreciate El Paso, you know, taking pretty much that same experience but distilling it down to the essential moves and it's a quick I don't know how long it took us. Less than an hour.
  • It's really hard and it can be really swingy.
  • You don't always have to teach a new game. Sometimes it's good to go back to something you know people like.
  • It is hard to teach because of the exact thing that I watched Don's face get confused about when you say you're in my garden. I'm in your garden.
  • It is chesslike in that you just try to optimize your moves over everybody else's moves.
  • It's a heavier game than I usually like, but I just think it's really clever the way it's put together.
  • The timer fits the theme in this game. You're driving 50 miles an hour in traffic trying to fight off bad guys.
  • Definite Spy Hunter vibes from this game.
  • The dice represent nature, which screws up your whole plan for that magic.
  • If you're going to play Twilight Imperium, you need to drink water, hydrate or not play.
  • And so Gunnet is a game that was sent us specifically reached out to me, asked me if we wanted to cover and they were interested in us covering it on this podcast, which is a first first time.
  • The core of the game is having the discussion of, okay, well, I'm going to give you this because you're going to act first and the first thing that's going to happen is we're going to drive the car to the left one space and then you're going to shoot.
  • I usually don't like a game with a timer, but you know, the timer fits the theme in this game. You're driving 50 miles an hour in traffic trying to fight off bad guys.
  • For a game that's seems like it's about making you feel stressed out for a brief moment and then that stress turns into moments of joy and glory. Like I think it accomplished that more often than it didn't.
  • The other game is Rollin One, uh, which is a golf game. Again, small footprint. It's a small box.
  • You take turns designing the course. So you take a number of cards that represent parts of the the you know the golf course and you put them together.
  • The golf clubs are represented by dice. So there's a d20, d12, d10 and so on.
  • And so there's actually some serious strategy to picking your club.
  • I thought it was very clever and I think both of the games are pretty darn thematic.
  • Make sure you are in the mood for the thing that you're going to partake.

Overall sentiment (raw)
positive
Pros
  • Fast playtime (around an hour)
  • Cool, chunky components like meeples and storage boxes
  • Enjoyable basic rondelle system
  • Satisfying building and upgrading mechanic
  • Unique feel of only being able to use your own built buildings
  • Challenging decisions regarding high-risk, high-reward plays
  • Clever mechanic with worker and cow discard piles
Cons
  • Component quality contrast (cool boxes/meeples vs. standard cardboard tokens/cubes)
  • Can feel like you don't get to do what you wanted due to fast pace
  • High level of randomness in card draws can be frustrating
  • Lacks the 'meat' or depth of the original Great Western Trail
Thematic elements
  • Cattle driving, building an engine
Comparison games
  • Great Western Trail
Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Engine Building — Players build and upgrade buildings on the board, which they can then activate for specific actions. The engine determines movement speed (1-3 or 1-4 spaces).
  • Hand Management — Players manage a hand of cards, balancing the need to build a good hand for scoring with the tendency to play cards quickly due to the game's pace.
  • Rondelle — The game features a rondelle movement system where players move clockwise around a small map, stopping at locations to perform actions.
  • Set Collection — Players collect cattle cards, and scoring is based on different breeds of cattle for a breeding score.
  • Tableau Building — Players can build and upgrade buildings which are added to their player area, and only they can activate their own buildings.
  • Worker Placement — Players hire workers, and the number of workers influences actions like acquiring cattle.

Quotes (from this video)
  • It's just a really quick, fast game.
  • I kind of liked that only I could use my building.
  • So, all around it's just challenging to do to do the big things.
  • It really is clever. It really does work well.
  • So, with that said, what are my quibbles with the game?
  • Because the game is so fast, sometimes you do feel like, ah man, I couldn't do the things I wanted to do.
  • So, there is a high level of randomness to the game.
  • And the last thing I'm going to say is there's not a whole bunch of meat to this game.

Um it is a phenomenal worker placement game where we are controlling a colony of ants trying to, you know, spread out into the uh the countryside, um you know, set up pheromone trails of scavenging ants, exploring, dealing with big scary bigger bugs than us, like centipedes and millipedes and whatnot, getting to the far reaches where there are huge benefits if we're the first player to occupy, and, you know, basically expand our little ant kingdom.
  • And unlike most other ant colony civilization games, there is no player versus player in this game. No direct attacking. We just have to fight, you know, the the other big bugs that are out there.
  • this is a conveyor belt game, folks, and I love conveyor belts. The conveyor belt here is the life cycle of our ants.
  • Everything about this game is fantastic.
  • It's the second best game we played this month. It's Ants.
  • The Last Droids.
  • This game is phenomenal.
  • It's an I split, I choose game, which is a fun little thing.
  • That decision, which do I keep for myself, which two do I give to the other players, is phenomenal.
  • The rules actually suggest that once the cards are revealed before the lead player hands them out and keeps one for themselves that players could say, "Hey, I really want that one."
  • The art in this game is stunning.
  • It is the best game I played this month as a three-player game.
  • As a two-player game, I don't know. So, I'm going to have to do a follow-up in a future roundup, I assume.

  • The front cover of the adventure book implores the the reader or the player or or or whatever you'd call it to um Hang on, I have it here. I do to figure out the truth of this queer mystery and I used the word queer, you know, in two ways, one of which is is a very strange kind of thing going on within the fiction. And the other, of course, is you know, as a queer person who grew up in the '80s and '90s and had to try to figure herself out not entirely successfully during that time.
  • Because for the most part writing in board games especially is quite bad. Like the the quality of of of the flavor of the literary writing is quite abysmal almost across the board. Here's the thing. I'm good at it. I know I'm good at it. I know I'm probably a better writer than most people working in board games and I'm fine with that.
  • And then on top of all that, there's all these annotations of the person who owned it. And so, you also have to piece together like parts of the life of the author of the module and the person who owned that and the way that this book then interacts with these other personal effects.
  • And so, each of those things led into another thing. And while I was doing that video, um, and a big part of that story involves his time at Parker Brothers uh during a time when Parker Brothers was expanding to also do video games and children's books and records. And and then they ended up, you know, destroying their company doing that and that's how they were sold to Hasbro eventually.

  • The simplest feature of the new expansion is the exchange tokens and play a start the game with one and can collect them through some of the expansion actions in the game.
  • The second and most significant feature of the expansion is in your new auxilary action which allows you to build branchlets up into the rails to the north.
  • Expanding north and creating cities where you're eligible to deliver to on the rails for north board is worth a reasonable amount of victory points.
  • bears in earlier games in the base game people delivered maybe three times they did not mind the minus point and now I think it's not at that good choice to deliver more than one time here I even prefer to make another first delivery maybe Chicago.
