Description

Meadow is an engaging set collection game with over two hundred unique cards containing hand-painted watercolor illustrations. In the game, players take the role of explorers competing for the title of the most skilled nature observer. To win, they collect cards with the most valuable species, landscapes, and discoveries. Their journey is led by passion, a curiosity of the world, an inquiring mind, and a desire to discover the mysteries of nature. The competition continues at the bonfire where the players race to fulfill the goals of their adventures.

In this medium-weight board game for 1-4 players, you take turns placing path tokens on one of the two boards. Placing a token on the main board allows the player to get cards, but playing them requires meeting certain requirements. Playing a token on the bonfire board activates special actions (which helps to implement a chosen strategy) and gives the opportunity to achieve goals that provide additional points. Throughout the game, players collect cards in their meadow and surroundings area. At the end, the player with the most points on cards and on the bonfire board wins.

Meadow also includes envelopes with additional cards to open at specific moments...

Pros
  • Nice ideas and concepts in the scenarios
  • Beautiful artwork
  • The 'Beginning' scenario was enjoyable and added to the experience without too much extra tracking
  • The magnetic components in the 'Windmills' scenario were well-implemented
  • The hot air balloon artwork in the 'Balloons' scenario is spectacular
Cons
  • The scenarios are not modular and cannot be incorporated into the base game as modules
  • The 'Bridges' scenario requires splitting the play area and balancing scoring between left and right sides, adding more to track
  • The fit of components in the 'Windmills' scenario was too tight, causing cardboard to separate
  • The 'Windmills' scenario felt overly focused on planning and optimization rather than a hike
  • The 'Balloons' scenario involved a lot to think about and didn't feel like a hike
  • The 'Observation Tower' scenario narrowed the decision space and didn't feel thematically tied to the nature walk
  • The 'Cave' scenario doesn't feel like a meadow and features many spiders and insects, which might not appeal to all players
  • The scenarios felt very mechanical and didn't tie into the theme of the original Meadow game
  • The Adventure Book is not compatible with the Downstream expansion
  • The Adventure Book requires an additional box, creating more storage needs
  • Concerns about how often players would want to replay the scenarios
  • The scenarios don't feel like a hike and are more about chasing icons or timing actions

Quotes (from this video)
  • I didn't quite enjoy this but I want to kind of just go through what these scenarios entail what's included with the expansion and kind of just talk through what it is because I did have some fun moments with it and there are some neat ideas but ultimately I'm going back to Meadow plus the downstream expansion
  • for me at least it's not like a new gameplay experience it is a set of new rules for you to focus on and to sort of optimize your play style to do well within that set of rules if you will
  • I don't know I I felt very focused on like how I had to build this out and how I had to plan it because these have to be placed in order as well from left to right
  • it was a lot it it was more than I expected um definitely a neat concept A Lot of these have awesome ideas just not not quite for me
  • it it really sort of narrowed that decision space and had me playing in ways that just didn't thematically feel tied to that just nice calm peaceful nature walk that I'm used to
  • it doesn't really tie into the theme of the original Meadow game I didn't feel like I was going on these hikes
  • I am looking forward to returning to playing Meadow plus Downstream together
  • I think solo games and board games as a hobby in general we're always learning about our preferences and what we like what we don't like and kind of learning from that
  • I just did not click for me and that is fine it may very well work for you

Quotes (from this video)
  • as long as it has a Target at the start of its turn it's not going to move at all instead it's just going to attack the closest Target that I can see
  • if you try to move across a mouse trap you have to pause you have to stop and see if you actually successfully cross that mousetrap without springing it
  • if you don't roll a star in other words if you're a slow moving animal maybe you don't roll very many dice and therefore you don't roll the star that you in need the Trap is sprung
  • and now he's in line of sight he can attack him he's going to use the Mystic bolt now that's going to cost him one cheese
  • the best part here is he just grabbed four cheese cuz he gets two cheese for every one cheese that he rolls that's his special ability
  • so in this situation if the rat next to them was not killed he wants to go after this rat
  • so although she's wounded that doesn't count but Colin is wounded so she's going to get another die for that so that's four dice
  • so in that situation no blocks at all that means the damage gets through and we're going to be able to remove this rat Warrior right from the board
  • we only used up his move action so let's use up his main action to do search a search
  • so very heroic of You Luke I like that
  • this is the first time we've ever pulled this card and this is pretty cool so I guess the idea here is that for a period of time you've created this this Golem made out of cheese that will attack and defend for you and it's got really good stats a four attack and a three defense
  • minions are not affected by tile of effects including most traps
  • We're going to be able to remove this rat Warrior right from the board
  • so that wraps this turn up so now we have to turn it back over to you guys and once again meganos is going to be first
