Description

Ra is an auction and set-collection game with an Ancient Egyptian theme. Each turn players are able to purchase lots of tiles with their bidding tiles (suns). Once a player has used up his or her suns, the other players continue until they do likewise, which may set up a situation with a single uncontested player bidding on tiles before the end of the round occurs. Tension builds because the round may end before all players have had a chance to win their three lots for the epoch. The various tiles either give immediate points, prevent negative points for not having certain types at the end of the round (epoch), or give points after the final round. The game lasts for three "epochs" (rounds). The game is easy to learn.

From the Box:
The game spans 1500 years of Egyptian history in less than an hour!
The players seek to expand their power and fame and there are many ways to accomplish this: Influencing Pharaohs, Building monuments, Farming on the Nile, Paying homage to the Gods, Advancing the technology and culture of the people. Ra is an auction and set collecting game where players may choose to take risks for great rewards or... And all this is for the glory of the Sun God Ra!

Quotes (from this video)
  • Ask a Board Gamer! My first question actually launches with a tragic story - i've got bad news for you Brent - i've got some bad news for you - i got bad news - Uh-oh - A fire has destroyed your entire board game collection - new stuff included - Oh no! - i know! - Oh sh*t - And you have to rebuild - i wanna know: what's the first thing you rebuild with?
  • I would start with Splendor - Dragon Strike - Citadels - Hansa Teutonica - Mysterium - Boss Monster - Kingdom Death: Monster, hands down - 1313 Dead End Drive!
  • I love it so much! I've never won a game - I have a massive amount of fun.
  • It was the first real unique board game I owned.
  • D6 is basically designed for individuals who don't know how to play Dungeons & Dragons, but it's a really simplified D&D board game version.
  • It was like mousetrap almost. You build up this elaborate scene and you trigger traps and devices... Clue to the next level!
  • I probably would start off with Scythe. I've spent so much money buying all the expansions. I've spent a ton of time going over strategy, playing with other people, teaching other people. It's a long game to get to learn if you've ever played it. I just have to get that one back.
  • It is by far the best game that I have ever played. I absolutely love cooperative gameplay.
  • I don't really like counter-operative gameplay, even though I know that nobody else ever calls it that.
  • I tried Munchkin once, and I don't want to lose my friends over a game.
  • Cosmic Encounter you want to avoid, and of course, uh, Monopoly, because everybody should avoid it at all costs.
  • Kingdom Death: Monster is probably one of the most critically acclaimed and, like, artistically inspired.
  • When you look at the miniatures and you look at the details, the time and the effort and the inspiration that goes into it is very very nice.
  • Can you still get it? - Yes, you can! They do a lot of limited print collectors models of sorts. Those are irreplaceable.
  • I don't know how I'm gonna put my kid through college since I have to buy it all again!
  • There's been a fire, and it's destroyed your entire board game collection. What game do you buy first to replenish it? - Dinosaur World.

Quotes (from this video)
  • it's a very moving experience because some of the things some of the decision making as you're trying to win the game about where to sort of spend your resources and spend your time so the effectively you can win you know you're going to have to leave certain people behind
  • the combat's really cool you know it's right up there with any good Skirmish game
  • this is another one where as soon as I was done with the campaign of the first you know the the main box I really felt like I wanted to go back and play it again but I think I need to give it time because now as time has kind of moved on I don't really have the desire to go back and play it again
  • those to me are the best of that kind of genre because it has a lot of just more physical elements than like the unlock or even exit has it has a really cool like uh very analog feeling mechanism that goes with it
  • this is other than the next game on the list probably the perfect Legacy game because it makes the right jump at the right time and it really stages you into getting to the more and more complex layers Without Really Ever Actually Ever Being Boring at any point
  • the magic of that first playthrough would not be there it just would not be there when the some of the reveals and some of the things in terms of like you know why are we playing this game 12 times in a row what's the kind of story that's threaded through here
  • the mechanically altered board and characters and stuff becomes the story itself and that is revealed to you one time and then you don't get to do it again
  • the games aren't in jail like you know what I mean like why why are you forcing me to play a certain kind of game or a certain game over and over that's jail

Quotes (from this video)
  • The older games are less as more and the newer games are more as more
  • I really don't like Katan at all so I wouldn't know what to suggest in terms of expansions or house rules
  • normally my favorite games have a good ratio of low rules overhead in comparison to the complexity and decks or so more of the depth of the game
  • I like games that are kind of 90 minutes maximum
  • I don't like using computers to play board games
  • I generally like games that have a degree of uh incentive building
  • I love supply and demand you know and kind of know Buy Buy Low sell high that kind of thing
  • my thoughts are pretty neutral um I'm pretty numb about the subject to be honest
  • for me it just felt like a generic deck building game and but instead of having more cards you are just boosting up the cards you already have
  • I like point salad style games and I don't really see it as a matter of you know being a point salad I just see it as you know you get eight points on your turn I get three points on my turn therefore you've gained five points and I haven't
  • games with a heavy setup is quite a big um deterrent for me
  • I would say you can get a really good collection in 10 to 20 games
  • I don't have a lifestyle game um I like dipping in and out of tons of different games rather than doing a deep dive into one particular game
  • I did like the the dice system in tetum you know either choosing a dice for the resources or for the action strength I thought that was a cool mechanism
  • I reckon this is kind of a p kind of a perfect storm really
  • it's a face Toof face um social activity rather than being behind a screen

  • my all-time favorite author of Mythos fiction is of course Brian Lumley
  • The thing that I like best you ask me if it rates when I go I went to or I didn't get make it to Origins this year but I was at Origins last year and when I went back in where they were doing the play areas where people signed up to play and I saw them one day playing four they had they didn't had they one copy and they copied it of the original Arkham Horror
  • The greatest reward any game designer gets is is that people are enjoying your game
  • My whole process and I start with this I always start with theme and then I go to experience this is the theme and this is the experience I want them to have and everything is built off of that
  • It's hard to think back and we're going way back in time so it's hard to think back and remember who who did what but Kevin did so many uh he was so skilled at doing so many of these things
  • It's not a deductive game is because you can replay the cases because I've made multi counter multiple encounter cards for everything
  • It's smaller it's easier to set up it's uh faster playing and it's not nearly as fiddly as the other games
  • I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed my time with this but I don't think I would encourage most people to seek it out
  • I think this game has a has kind of a different feel than the other games

  • many reasons uh I like just exploring new games without having like the pressure of like take your turn and like I got to do this and so everybody else can play can take my time
  • it's almost like are you coming into solo games for the first time have you basically never played board games or you're like oh I played like a couple as a kid but now I want to get into it or is it like the the other path where it's like yeah I play a bunch of board games but now I don't have a group or I want to explore playing on my own
  • I love it it's fun and I think also like looking at that development it is like when you play solo you're the only one playing so there's this whole thing where you're like if I win my first time without you know just getting lucky and I I have no idea what I'm doing and I won why do I play again
  • there's something special about games that let you get to negative points
  • I certainly am a big fan of of your work
