Welcome to Cardboard East, the flat Earth channel.

No.

Absolutely not. Hello everybody, my name is Ilya.

And my name is Tyler. Together we make up Cardboard East, a couple that loves to play board games. And this is Lauper,

who doesn't want to be here. Lauper, say hello to everybody. He's our little tripod cat. Oh, he's purring. Purring up a storm.

Oh, look at you. Look at how much hair you have. Ugh. Oh my goodness. This is why there is lint rollers everywhere. Now today, we're here to tell you about our adventures over to our journey to Canada Place. I thought you were going to say over water and I was going to say you better think twice about that one.

There are some lakes.

Maybe.

I looked out the window and I saw two lakes in the flat prairies of Canada. Probably in Ontario, too. But, yeah. Water. Now, why did we go to Ontario? Well, we went to Canada Place. And what is Canada Place, Tyler? Canada Place is a trade show put on by Asmodee Canada and they have a lots of games that are coming basically released out into the wild in Lots of hair. Games that are released out into the wild for like retailers, uh but in Canada. In Canada, cuz Canada [clears throat] also plays board games.

Mhm. And sometimes we're a little delayed when it comes to uh getting games in Canada. I think often we're delayed.

Often. But, sometimes we are ahead.

Yeah. Which is very nice. Did it happen this time? Probably not. But, maybe we have. Who knows? Uh in addition to visiting Canada Place, we also visited our lovely friend Jenna, over from the Board Game Garden.

We stayed there, actually, which was very, very kind of her. We met her lovely dogs, Penny and Dingle Boy. No. No. No. Walter. It was wonderful to grace the Board Game Garden. There's a lot of greenery in terms of games and And got a lot of games played.

We did. So, we thought we would dedicate this video to all the games that we played. That whole experience. And talk about them and talk about how much fun we had. And at the very end of the video, we're going to do a very special giveaway.

We are. As you may have guessed from either the thumbnail or the title. How fun. But of course, before we get to that, you may have noticed something in the corner of your screen. What, these things? The Well, the one thing. Well. This thing? Yeah.

Yeah. We forgot to tell you about our really fun experience that we had over the month of April. Yeah. We roughed tugged tug rug tuft I did it again. We rug tuft. What does that mean, Tyler?

to use these fun little craft guns that basically shoot yarn into a back like a cloth and make rugs. Yeah. I'm sure Ilya's probably going to put up some videos, but I decided to make a Pokéball and Ilya decided to make our logo. Cuz we just need more decorations and I really like our logo. Look how awesome it looks.

Except I feel like we have to now figure out where we can put them cuz they're like pretty small, but they need to be

They're definitely wall pieces. They're not ground rugs. They're wall rugs.

Well, this one could be ground. Who knows? What did you think of the experience? What was your favorite part of it? The actual tufting of the mat

gun? Yeah, I think I thought that was the most fun. And what did you not like about it?

There's this part where you can like shave indentations into like the lines and it it makes it look a lot cleaner, but it's hard. And like if you mess up, then like you're still digging into the yarn that is there and you don't have a whole lot to work with, so yeah. I decided not to do mine because I was too scared I would mess it up.

Yeah, fair. But shaving the rug was probably my favorite part.

Shaving was pretty fun.

It was nice to get a little bit of hairs off and make it all even and nice.

Mhm. But that is that. Yeah. So, we will do a rapid-fire now Mhm. of the games that we played and what we thought and how much or how little fun we had. Oh. Often how much. Yeah. Mainly because of the company because games with Jenna and friends

[snorts]

lots of laughs guaranteed. So, the convention was from Monday to Wednesday and we were we got there a day Well, we got there Saturday. So, we Saturday night. So, we spent Sunday playing games. And we also went on a nice nature walk.

Yeah. Which was very nice. But the games that we played are Tenth. What do you want me to say? Tenth is just great. Tenth is one of my favorite roll and writes I think.

One of your favorite roll and writes? That's some high praise from Tyler Cambos. Flip

Tyler is exceptionally good at Tenth. Well, it's just about like I don't know, comboing. It's super super cool. It makes your brain really happy I think. You'd be a good And the bingo stamps that they have going on is just like very very satisfying. Does it give you flash forwards of being in a senior home and doing all the stampings?

No, cuz I don't think I'll be able to uh You can teach everybody Tenth. Maybe. Yeah.

That could be so much fun. Good point. Another game we got to play is Whistle Wood for the first time where you essentially place tiles and build patterns and then it grows out bigger and bigger. Yeah. I really like this one.

This one was neat. That's like two rounds.

were so silly and I love a silly cat.

Yes. Yeah. Next game we played was Flip Pick Towers and this is a flip and write. Draft and write? Sort of both. But you were basically just building an an amazing cat castle over three two rounds and it was a lot It was pretty heavy actually. Yeah. Yeah. There's a lot of interactions, a lot of wine vines. I can't ever say that word.

Vines. Vines.

And dragons. And dragons and you have to give gold to the dragons to be like, "No, no, dragon, go over there. Have your gold."

Uh it was a blast. I would definitely recommend that one. It was actually one of our top games of the month, too.

Yes. Yes. Another one we played is Catan on the road, which is a 50-minute card game Catan game.

Mhm. And it was spicy. We got really close.

really close. Uh and it was just a blast. So, I'm excited to share that one a bit more and get a few more plays in of that one.

Mhm. Mhm. And especially because I'm sort of over Catan at this point, um the card game was a good refresh.

I could be convinced to revisit it. It's been so long No.

that I I would give it another shot. Yeah, no. Another one we played is Postcards. That was new to us. It was pretty pretty like straightforward in actions because all you did was you played a card to do an action. Uh sometimes it depended on the card that you had that you the action you could do, but you're just going around all of France, I believe, and just collecting uh stamps, um setting up tents, and just sort of touring around, I guess.

Trying to collect postcards and send them. The postcards were so gorgeous.

very [snorts] pretty. I was a big fan of that, and I I would like to have more of them in my presence so I can admire the beautiful scenery. Yes. Yes. Yes. Another really silly game we played is Toddles Bubbles.

Toddles Bubbles. Toddles Bubbles, yeah. Toddles Doddles Bubbles.

Bubbles. Essentially in this game, you reveal a card, and if First time. If it's the first time that's revealed, somebody will name that character of the card. Later on, if that card is revealed and already has name, you have to call out the name. So, you're trying to remember a bunch of names, you're trying to name new things, and it just gets silly, and laughs are just had. Yes. Yeah. Yeah, it's it's a memory game, essentially. It's fun.

And last but not least, on Sunday, we played Kokashi, which is a game that both me and Jenna had played on BGA, and you missed out. So, you finally got to show you and it's fun. I liked it a lot. It is like an engine building esque type game where you're just placing tiles on different columns and then activating them as you go to activate different columns and then it gets pretty pretty fun. And the tiles were clicky clacky which you do not get on BGA. That's fair. We continued our Sunday journey with gingerbread house.

That one was fun. I have wanted to play that game for so long and I'm so happy we did. It was a blast. You will place little tiles and you invite little characters and it's just So, the convention didn't start until later that evening on Monday. We got to So, we got to play the new River Valley Jewel Work game. And that one was Jewel Craft, right? River Valley Glass Work. Yeah, okay. That's why I'm getting it

River Valley Jewel Craft instead of Glass Works. Yeah, and this one was different than Glass Works, but it was still a lot of fun. It's like a set collector and your you've got this fun little grid that you need to roll die and pick one and then gather resources and spend those resources to build jewelry. And while you pick one, everyone else gets the other die you roll. So, it's always continuous and on when it's not your turn you do something a little bit different. So, I really like the dynamic feel of it and it's just such a Yeah, fun game.

Always doing something. And then we arrived.

We did. We traversed through the Ontario lands

[snorts]

into Canada Place. We got welcomed by a carpet of the hotel. And then a banner that said Canada Place. We went up some escalators and then we got to playing games. Yeah.

We did. Yes. But before that we had food, did we not? I don't know. It it We ended up having food that evening, but the more important thing is the games. And we got to play dre- Daydream, which is another uh I did not.

Oh, right. It's another roll and write. And I guess that seems to be like a theme so far throughout the game. That was a lot of fun. I like it cuz you can have like it's three uh the boards extend to be three, but you can fold them to play at just like one side, and then that's like a game mode, and then you open it up, and that's a game mode, and then three is a game mode, and they're slightly different.

That one feels very Canadian to me cuz I've seen a ton of Canadian creators talk about that game, and it's just so gorgeous, and I can't wait to try it myself. We also got to play All In Predictions, which is a poker variant where basically you're playing poker, but you're also trying to predict who is going to win. So, you get points for your cards, and there's ways to manipulate them, but you also get points for guessing who'll win. So, later in the evening we gathered with a lot of our content creator friends, folks that we hadn't seen in a while, folks that we just was meeting, and we got to play Brick Like This, which is the LEGO game, and you basically just pair up. One of you is going to be teaching, the other is going to be building, but you're doing that amongst the other teams, too, so you're racing. And it is a lot of fun. We strictly have the rules where like nobody goes with anybody that they that that are that are are their couples. So, that was fun to switch it up. I liked that quite a lot. And we played with a challenge mode, which made it quite spicy. Yes, exactly. Another game we got to play is Teliko, where essentially you're trying to get rid of all your tokens by drawing tiles, pushing them in the middle contraption, and getting new tiles, but placing them on your board.

It's a gorgeous game. It's been really fun. We talked about it in our top five cuz it clearly made our top five, and it was just a joy. And then to end the evening, we played That Sound Game. This is a party game, sort of like Monikers, where you are just going to be drawing cards and sounding out those things. Sort of trying to do charades as well, but you have to have your hands behind your back and it is just a great laugh. It's a good time. Just have fun with it. That would be my biggest thing for everybody. It's It's good. We played with big teams, so it was pretty fun to explore that. Now comes day two. We kicked this day off with a round table with a bunch of content creators where we talked things, stutter, gaming, board gaming, and being a content creator, which is really interesting and it's nice to have a dedicated space to be able to do that.

Yeah, [clears throat] we often have those conversations like amongst each other just like naturally, but like a guided conversation with people from different spaces as well cuz we're talking like YouTube, short-form content, um blogs, like written blogs, and just the variety of people that are playing and creating content is always good to hear like the different perspectives. Definitely. And then we got to explore the expo hall. So, a small expo hall where essentially a bunch of publishers showcase some of the upcoming games, some of the current games that they have going on. So, we traversed, we explored, we took a little bit of a look, we saw some upcoming releases that maybe you'll see a sneak peek in this video. Is that a Hello Kitty Flip 7 I see? Maybe. There are also some games that we saw that we're not allowed to talk about yet, but Well, Tyler, don't tease people like that.

Oopsies.

But But, speaking of upcoming games, there's one I got to play Mhm. that I've been really excited for and it was there and it's called Circadia. It's a Hisashi Hayashi game and it's a very simple card game, but it has a lot of interesting strategy and feel to it where you're essentially collecting, trying to fulfill contracts but trying to alternate day and night. And both of us got to play this game separately. Uh what did you think of it? I liked it. I thought it was really interesting, the switching between day and nights and then the set collecting, but also just like being able to play the cards. The card you play down in front of you is the number of cards you get to draw. So, if you play a one, you only get to take one card. So, the balancing act of that. If I played four ones, I still only get to draw one card and now my hand is like empty. So, you have to balance through that. It was a cool little puzzle to figure out.

Very neat. We did end up getting a heavier game to the table called Forestry and this is from Capstone. It's a game about exactly that, forestry. You're going to be setting up a buildings, you're going to be taking uh tearing down trees and then also replanting them. And the game progresses in this uh sequence of just like you using up your action points. But, the interesting thing is it gets progressively more and more cuz you're basically building an engine. And fantastic. I want to play more of it. I wasn't sure I had figured out the strategy. Right at the end, I sort of had it, but I think more. More plays need to happen. More plays definitely need to happen. That one is a gem.

Mhm. Now, another one that was probably one of my favorites of the weekend was a card game called Dinop. And you may have heard of it because it has a hit song associated with it.

goodness. Just for it. It's called Dinop. Streaming now on Spotify.

It teaches you how to play the game actually.

A little bit, yeah. There's def- I've never seen a board game have a dedicated song. So, definitely give it a listen and it's it's it's a bop. But, this card game is just a gem. It's the same designer as Scout and there's definitely some Scout

Oh, you get vibes of Scout for sure. I, dare I say, like it more than Scout.

Oh, I do not. So, there's that. But, I'm sure we'll be talking about it more in the future here too. But, that is [clears throat] Dinop. Later in the evening, I got to play eight dragons which is from Wonderbow and honestly, this game is really really neat. You're moving around these workers, but these workers are carrying a lot your They're dragons and they're carrying along

Are they dragon? Yeah, they're dragging along other dragons, but these wormlings will also like activate abilities as they go across based on the board sequence that you're in and it's just this combo-tastic game where there's a bunch of different actions happening that you'll have to go through. You're collecting tiles, placing them, trying to figure out the sets that you need to make to score the most points. It's a lot of fun. It is a lot of fun. We got to play a bunch of other games throughout the day cuz Tyler would go off, I would go off, we reconvened, we played something together and generally Tuesday was just a blast of different types of games and connecting with a variety of really cool people. And then all of a sudden it's Wednesday and we only have the afternoon or the morning and afternoon cuz we're leaving that day, which is sad, but we've got to get more games in. So, here we go. But, Tyler, we forgot something extremely important.

What? On Tuesday, we partook in a puzzle contest. We got second last.

So, second last is not last, but boy oh boy did we have joy. Uh we took so long that I think the organizers left the room and just left us and the other team to finish the puzzles if we wanted to. But, it was still a lot of fun though. It was a lot of fun. The puzzle was gorgeous.

And we did it in like an hour and a half maybe?

Maybe an hour 15, I would say. I think it was a little bit faster than that. I feel like if you ever have an opportunity to enter with a bunch of friends a puzzle a speed puzzle competition, you may not win, but doing it might be really fun. Do it for the fun. Do it for the fun. Everyone loves a puzzle. And the little bit of stress that you'll go through. Exactly. But, yes, Wednesday was sad. Uh Tyler first ended up playing Behind Lens.

I did, yeah. And this is a game from Inside Up Games where you're basically just going to be sliding tiles based on the cards that you've drafted into your camera to take pictures. And the way you take pictures is by lining all of the right column up to match the photo, and then you're good to go. Those That will continue for like three rounds, and it is a fun little solitaire puzzle that you've kind of got to figure out as you go, but there's a lot of scoring that happens, and that's the exciting part about the game is you can see yourself like slowly progress throughout the rounds. And it's nice to know where you're at, but there are also secret objectives, so you never know if you're actually going to be right in the pack, if you're going to pull ahead, or if you're going to fall behind. Exactly. While Tyler was doing that, I got to play Frosted Blooms, which I've played before and I love. It is such a clever game that is still very unnatural because you're trying to create gaps with tiles, and my brain despises that cuz I like when things go together nicely. But it is nice cuz if you create those gaps, you get to put things into them.

So, kind of a payoff. Yeah. And I got to try Cat Earth. Right.

Which is basically, as we all know, the Earth is flat, and cats here are trying to push buildings off the Earth, and you're racing to push everyone else's buildings off by playing cards. So, it's it's very silly with I feel like I would like it more We played it two. I feel like I would like it more with more players cuz it became a very like chess-like game where like with more players it'd be way more chaotic, which would be really fun. Does it have a disclaimer in it saying that the flat the Earth is not indeed flat? Why would anybody think that?

Stop it.

Welcome to Covert, the flat Earth channel.

No.

Absolutely not. And then, Piles. We got to play Piles of Piles.

Have you ever played Piles? It is the silliest game because what you're trying to do is you have stacks of cards in front of you in different stacks, and you're trying to get each of those stacks to have all of one item. The way you do that is you can pick a stack up and you can exchange with the center. But, the thing is is if your item in this stack needs to go into another stack, you have to place in the center first, and then pick up this pile, and then collect it and place another card out there. While you're doing that, Tyler can steal away your little scarf. So, then you're left scarfless.

Because there's We were playing at full player count, which I highly recommend because it's wild. It's chaotic. There are people And there's only four cards in the middle, so there's like eight of us trying to grab these cards, exchange them so we can get rid of another card we might not want, unintentionally taking a card from somebody else, and it's just like super super chaotic. James, however, is amazing at this game, and we played it twice. Shout out Lil Meepos. He won both times.

Lil Meepos coming in clutch. And we ended off with a game called Tally Up, which is from the same designer as Flip Seven. Except it's a dice rolling game where you want to get combo-tastic points and not bust. Yeah. Because if you bust, you just don't get them. Very similar vibe, kind of like a Flip Seven. You're all sort of joining in on this, and you're deciding whether or not you're going to stay. And as you roll, you're going to Well, the first person who's the leader is going to stay um and continue rolling, and the points will stack up, or the points won't stack up at all cuz you'll bust. And each of the dice has different faces, so choosing what you're going to roll is the really fun part of it all. And that's a really good luck. It's like it's a vi- nice vibrant I want to play this. Let's see what this is about. Yeah, exactly. But generally, that has been our Canada Plays Adventures. But, the best part of it all was just connecting with the lovely people in Canada who also love and share the passion of our board games. Yeah, there's been a couple creators that we were really I was really happy to meet finally in person because we talked so much online, and we just communicate like through our posts and everything like that. But, being able to actually like sit down, hang out, and play some games with them is a whole different story. And it's fun to make new friends.

It's fun to make new friends. Well, well, well. When they're departing, we got a goody bag. We did. Well, not entirely. We knew we were going to get a goody bag, but thankfully, Canada Plays or Asmodee Canada was kind enough to send them separately so that we didn't have to lug this giant box of games that they so kindly provided to us. And we thought we'd share the goody bag with you, but not only that, we're going to do a giveaway. We are. Of the entire Mhm. goody bag.

We are because they were kind enough to give us two, and we want to share the love with you. So, we're going to quickly show you what is in the goody bag, and I will tell you how you can win the giveaway. Ready, Tyler? No. Rapid fire. I I I can't.

Here's the bag. I'm going to move it over,

and then I'll start pulling things out. Are you ready? Brick like this. This is the one that we played where you make little LEGOs into shapes. Up or down? Oh, this is such a good small card game from Capstone. Roll your goat. I don't know this one. I also don't know this one either.

You turn turn you take turns playing your goat cards. A brain in box. Is there a brain in there? I bet you it's like trivia or learning or Around soccer.

Oh, there you go. War machine. I believe this is just some miniatures, so you can paint them if you're interested in them. Fine. It's going to fall over, though. Uh we have Philip VII. We have Pick Your Poison. Oh my gosh, there's so much.

Pick your poison is a party game where you anonymously answer would you rather. Toil and troubles. We have sky rockets.

Ooh, fun. Little dice or not dice, what are they called? Time sand time. Sand timers. We have nature. I'm going to put this in front here. Oh, we have Dixit kids. The art on Dixit is just unparalleled. We have Pan up Po. Is that how you say it?

Pan up Pan up Po. Pan up Po. You roll the dice, collect the shapes indicated by the dice, read the card, and do your best to build using your shapes.

Oh my goodness.

How fun. There's so much in here. There's Feeling Cute. Yes, I am. Always. There's Catan on the road.

that one? There is Inheritors. Oh, this is actually a really fun game, too. Oh my goodness. There is IQ link. Ooh, is that the little fun one where you have to puzzle it all in?

Ooh, that looks fun. And then there is Dinup. Dinup. Beasley, come here. Come say hello. I think that is all that is in this Oh, wait, no. There's a couple other things. There is a book called Call of Cthulhu. This is a solitary adventure in Canada wilds.

In Canada. There's a Canada play uh not not um not A maple leaf.

It is a leaf.

And then there are some stickers. Beasley is not included in the giveaway.

Spot it. What do you think of this giveaway, Beasley? This is a huge giveaway. All right. Beasley, we got to talk about the serious stuff. How do you enter? How do you enter? There's two steps. Step number one, answer the question of the day, which is share with us a Canadian memory. A Canadian memory? Do you have a favorite Canadian city you want to visit?

don't have a Canadian memory?

There's food. Yeah, but what if they've never been to Canada? Well, what is one fact about Can- Canada that you know? We say eh a lot. Exactly. That can be one of the things you say.

There you go. If you've If you have nothing about Canada, like what's a stereotype then of Canada that you hear? Just share something about Canada in the comments down below. Bonus points if it's maybe like a food that you really like or a city that you visited or a memory you've had in Canada or maybe a Canadian friend that you've made. Let's talk Canada. Yeah. And then number two, use this keyword in your comment. It doesn't have to be part of your answer. It can just be part of it, but this is for us to know who wants to enter the giveaway because this is going to be a Canada-only giveaway. Because Canada Plays, we thought we would celebrate Canada being a Canadian channel. Mhm. We thought we'd do a Canadian-only giveaway. But fear not, there'll be many giveaways to come in the future if you are not in Canada. And that is it. So, if you enjoyed this video, make sure you hit that thumbs up button, hit that subscribe button if you're new here cuz we love talking about board games. Which of the ones would you want to learn more about?

Which ones should we do a deeper dive in? Also, answer a question down below about Canada. And until next time, we will see you later. Bye.
