Description

Introduced by the Moors, azulejos (originally white and blue ceramic tiles) were fully embraced by the Portuguese when their king Manuel I, on a visit to the Alhambra palace in Southern Spain, was mesmerized by the stunning beauty of the Moorish decorative tiles. The king, awestruck by the interior beauty of the Alhambra, immediately ordered that his own palace in Portugal be decorated with similar wall tiles. As a tile-laying artist, you have been challenged to embellish the walls of the Royal Palace of Evora.

In the game Azul, players take turns drafting colored tiles from suppliers to their player board. Later in the round, players score points based on how they've placed their tiles to decorate the palace. Extra points are scored for specific patterns and completing sets; wasted supplies harm the player's score. The player with the most points at the end of the game wins.

Overall sentiment (raw)
positive
Pros
  • Snappy play with clear escalation
  • The cost-reduction mechanic creates meaningful chain reactions
  • Beasts add dynamic tension and extra rewards
  • Investment-like pacing makes every move feel consequential
Cons
  • Abstract visuals and theme may deter players seeking thematic immersion
  • Detachment of abstract design could be a barrier for some newcomers
Thematic elements
  • Abstract strategy with area control, where mountains, beasts, and boons shape tension and scoring
  • A mountainous landscape featuring auspicious beasts, where players place stones and contend for boons across color quadrants.
  • Abstract, strategic with thematic flavor from beasts and mountain placements
Comparison games
  • Santorini
Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Beasts as positioning anchors — Auspicious beasts provide pathways to positionally claim and wrestle control, rewarding points, extra cards, or placement improvements.
  • Card-driven actions — Boons in spaces grant cards of specific colors or other effects.
  • Cost reduction via adjacency — The cost to place a stone is reduced by the number of your stones in the same row or column, with mountains blocking growth.
  • Endgame scoring and conditions — The game ends when a player reaches 25 points or when a player cannot place a stone on their turn.
  • Stone placement — Players place a stone on the board, spending one card of the matching color quadrant per boon in the space.
Video topics + discussion points
No key topics recorded for this video.
Quotes (from this video)
  • Azure has this fantastic sense of acceleration because no stone is ever removed.
  • Every placement that you make is an investment and every card that you pick up by placing a stone is of consequence.
  • Play is extremely snappy with the game concluding when a player hits 25 points or any players unable to place a stone on their turn.
  • I was more leerary on this one, having a lot of bad prior experience with these sort of detached abstracts, but this is the first one since maybe Santorini, another mythic dueler that really had me on the edge of my seat and wanting to play more.
  • What are auspicious beasts, you ask? Well, each has a way for players to positionally claim then wrestle control and reward you with their favor of points, extra cards, or even setting a stone at top their mountain, reaping all of the placement cost reduction that bestows.

Comparison games

Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Biodiversity constraint — When attracting animals, at least one covered animal must have come from the current turn and all covered animals must be of different colors.
  • Display vs. player-count scaling — The market has one more tile than the number of players; tile distribution changes with player count.
  • Endgame ecosystem scoring — Endgame scoring uses ecosystem tiles that reward specific native species distributions and reef adjacency.
  • Habitat formation — Form habitats by connecting three hexes of the same color; habitats attract matching small animals.
  • Large animal attraction — By creating valid habitats, players can attract large animal tiles; the top tile is worth more points.
  • Reef formation — Form reefs by connecting four or more of the same color; reefs score based on adjacent small animals.
  • tile drafting — Players draft tiles from a display and must place them so that at least one side shares a color with the existing layout.
  • Turn order snail token — A central snail determines turn order for the next round; taking it lets you go first next round.
