How this game feels to play
Description

Gloomhaven is a game of Euro-inspired tactical combat in a persistent world of shifting motives. Players will take on the roles of wandering adventurers with their own special sets of skills and their own reasons for traveling to this dark corner of the world. Players must work together out of necessity to clear out menacing dungeons and forgotten ruins. In the process, they will enhance their abilities with experience and loot, discover new locations to explore and plunder, and expand an ever-branching story fueled by the decisions they make.
This is a game with a persistent and changing world that is ideally played over many game sessions. After a scenario, players will make decisions about what to do next, which will determine how the story continues, kind of like a “Choose Your Own Adventure” book. Playing through a scenario is a co-operative affair where players will fight against automated monsters using an innovative card system to determine the order of play and what a player does on their turn.

Each turn, a player chooses two cards to play out of their hand. The number on the top card determines their initiative for the round. Each card also has a top and bottom power, and when it is a player’s turn in the initiative order, they determine whether to use the top power of one card and the bottom power of the other, or vice-versa. Players must be careful, though, because over time they will permanently lose cards from their hands. If they take too long to clear a dungeon, they may end up exhausted and be forced to retreat.

Pros
  • Familiarity with Gloomhaven mechanics makes it easy to learn.
  • Quick to set up.
  • Cute aesthetic.
Cons
  • Feels repetitive due to similar objectives.
  • The A/B card system is not ideal, limiting combo potential early on.
  • Randomness from the modifier die is static and predictable.
  • Rulebook is poorly organized, with crucial information online.
  • Components, particularly card quality, are cheap.
  • Gameplay can be boring due to being overly watered down.
  • Takes up more table space than expected for its size.
Thematic elements
  • A shrunk-down, cutesy version of Gloomhaven where players are shrunk and use everyday objects as game elements.
  • After the events of Gloomhaven
  • Players are a new hero who gets shrunk down and interacts with the world from a miniature perspective.
Comparison games
  • Gloomhaven
  • Frosthaven
  • Jaws of the Lion
Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • dual-sided cards — Cards have an A and B side. Playing an A side card flips it to B, and playing a B side card discards it. This is the primary way to manage card longevity.
  • Modifier Track — Replaces the traditional attack modifier deck. Players have a track where modifiers change based on dice rolls, and enemies have a similar track.
  • Sequential Scenarios — Scenarios are played in a fixed sequential order, unlike the branching paths in other Gloomhaven games.
  • Solo Play — Designed exclusively for solo play, where the player controls a single character.

Quotes (from this video)
  • this is the solo only uh version of Gloom Haven and as you can see it is in an extremely extremely tiny box
  • whenever you're familiar with Gloom Haven you're going to definitely know what's going on and if you're not familiar with Gloom Haven or any of the other Frost Haven or jaws of the lion this game will still teach you that
  • the biggest difference of the game um I'm not saying I don't like it but I I'm not a huge fan because if you have cards in your hand that uh are on your aside you have no option but to play their aide unless whenever you retrieve them
  • I actually got really bored with this game um it felt really repetitive
  • every almost every single objective falls into that Gloom Haven problem where it's like oh defeat All Monsters
  • it just got insanely repetitive and I was very much bored because it's so watered down
  • everything is very much minimized it's contained in this little box so the enemies are cubes on the map except for you you have a little little mini little little crack baggie of minis
  • there's no modifier deck instead you have a modifier track kind of and it's a very simil like it's it's the same track
  • I actually do not like in this game it has a zero or a plus minus in a circle
  • it's just very it's not that it is any worse than a deck or or attack dice
  • my problem with these are that they're so static like it's it's the same same modifier thing there's no variability
  • I just really don't like the die aspect
  • the rule book is a learn to play where it barely teaches you how to start like it tells you hey play the Bruiser and go through these steps and okay you're at the end uh well the rest of the rules are online that was just so bizarre to me
  • I thought the components were kind of cheap
  • the card quality is really bad like it like almost first time setting it up I just could see the Cards start to like curl up
  • I was like hey I'm immediately familiar with what's going on here uh that's a that's a good sign
  • I was like wow I'm getting the same experience cuz you're not
  • it's cute I mean that's really what I have going for it but like the the unique changes of like the the A and bside cards was not my favorite
  • I'm going to give this a whopping six out of 10 slightly above average
  • I just was insanely bored with it and have no desire to play it again

Quotes (from this video)
  • When it comes to teaching board games, I often feel a great sense of pressure to try and convey all of the game's rules effectively and clearly to the new players at the table to ensure that the game experience is enjoyable and runs smoothly.
  • Mistakes in games can really change the experience and your opinion about the game itself, especially if you've been playing that rule wrong for a really long time.
  • So, let my board game embarrassment begin.
  • It's the pitch that's going to really sell the game to whoever you're introducing it to, whether it's the theme or the flavor of the game, or how the mechanics are going to be, but missing the mark on that pitch is really going to determine whether the other players are going to really get the game or not.
  • I love board games that are centered around food. It really warms the soul and makes you feel really great inside
  • I love it when a rule book comes in sections, especially when it's color-coded and each of the things are highlighted in bold text and there's some really great examples that appear in the book itself.
  • So if anyone out there has a useful way of explaining this to me in a very simple way, I would greatly appreciate it if you write in the comment section below.
  • I'm sure I'll probably have a whole list of other board game rule mistakes I've made in all my other board games I could include in a future video.

Quotes (from this video)
  • There's something really satisfying about uh playing a game that feels like a Euro where you're competing for different objectives and then trying to uh develop a strategy that helps you to achieve those goals
  • I would definitely pick a board game with a really good strategy just because I love crunching the numbers kind of working my Tableau a little bit and Building engines using dice to try and create combos
  • Grand Austria Hotel is probably one of my favorite dice SL Euro games that I own in my collection
  • I think when I first was uh new to board game competitive games were definitely my flavor I just really wanted to win
  • but I think over time I've actually come to develop a really nice appreciation for Cooperative games
  • ultimately I'm going to have to lean towards Ticket to Ride there's a visual appeal to this and the fact that you brings that sense that the more times you play it you feel more rewarded for it
  • I am one to say that I don't like being I'm not a lucky roller and i' probably never ever kind of gamble or anything like that but I do like the feeling of rolling Dice and using Dice
  • if you were stuck on a deserted island which of these games you can only pick one would you take and play a lost ruins of arac thematic I'll give it or D Imperium also thematic cuz it's a deserted island and there's sand and the beach I guess that's kind of the connection there
  • I don't know I feel like a campaign experience is fun and I love the Miniatures and the potential for different character and story arcs and opening boxes something like Gloom Haven for example or the seventh continent but I don't know I'm just really drawn to how things fit together and puzzles and how they work
  • gaming is all about for me relationships and connections and just want to connect in with people and just sharing that enjoyment and excitement over and over again

  • And I'm wondering, Matt, if it's too much.
  • And there are there are so many games that I'm kind of like probably more more than ever.
  • I'm feeling less of the hype. Definitely less of the FOMO because come on, all these games I'm I'm coming to to um to retail. They're all coming.
  • crowdfunding fatigue.
  • The games aren't good. Like we're not saying that the game the games are great and they went to retail. So why is they well why are they being smashed onto this platform which is basically a pre-order pushing down I think uh all of those games that wouldn't necessarily get a retail release and need that uh need that money and need that funding and kind of almost bullying them out just through the amount of marketing money that goes into them.
  • It's kind of annoying and upsetting at the same time.
  • From that was birth the idea of being able to bring your ideas to life.
  • It's a 200 hours campaign. It's going to cost people £150. There is no way people will buy this game.
  • It's basically what looks like straight reprints or very simple reimplementations of games. These are also going onto the platform.
  • It's essentially anti-consumer practice which something I deeply annoy. I deeply adore. I do not like it at all.
  • It is a double risk aversion strategy.
  • We keep falling for it time and time.
  • It just became like and we got requested at all times every day and and the answer is always same we don't really do it.
  • The industry is more commonly and more regularly relying on the hype of a game more than the substance and the reality of a game rather than the game itself.
  • It is a continuous cycle of hype which is yeah and FOMO of course I mean we know the industry at least the crowdfunding industry feeds off of FOMO right it is again anti-consumer it is feeding on people that you know uh preying on people that may be prone to to that kind of marketing right so and it is you like me
  • But what do we do about it?
  • I really I really don't have an answer at this point. Uh because because I'm I'm part of the problem.
  • You tell us. Do you know?
  • Do you know? Let us know in the comments below what you think of the current state of crowdfunding.

Quotes (from this video)
  • Providing gamers a style of game that could be played multiple times with the game changing and evolving with each play.
  • The story of the game is told through multiple play sessions on your first play you're introduced to the story by learning about the characters locations and hopefully an interesting plot line the game will then move the story along through repeated plays where characters locations mechanics and even the game board itself may change in order to draw them there to fort by the end of the campaign you took part in the story that will hopefully give you as much enjoyment as seeing a really well good movie
  • number one BG g rated pandemic legacy
  • king of death monster 1.5 which just closed on kickstarter for twelve point three million dollars and over 19,000 backers
  • 2017 is going to be a big year for campaign games with highly anticipated titles such as massive darkness first Martian charter stone pendant legacy season 2 seventh continent and bloom raven bloom raven it's supposed to be gloom haven look spell check this stuff it's really not the hard or look like an idiot here there is not a word so if you're interested in campaign games this will be your year
  • can there be too much of a good thing these types of games are meant to be played over multiple sessions providing many hours of entertainment
  • it's probably best if you can have the same group playing each time for continuity purposes
  • for me this presents a problem with the wife and kids scheduling game times can be tough and the people I game with also has a family so getting all of our schedules to sync up could be a struggle and if you go too long between sessions you may forget some aspects of the story the purpose the plot shoot even the rules would you please stop moving the teleprompter
  • even though I love campaign style games I'm only going to be able to pick one or two to play and with all these good ones coming out I hate to miss out on some great experiences so maybe too much of a good good thing isn't necessarily a bad bad thing because we have lots of choices but I know I can play six to eight different standard typical common off-the-shelf type board games over the course of a month or approximately 30 days while with a campaign-style game I'll be gosh darn lucky if I can even get to play that just one time dagnabbit
  • are you looking forward to these campaign games are you in the same boat as me having to pick only one or two to play let me know in the comments

Quotes (from this video)
  • I just missed having the option to play War of the Rings, even if I would only get the chance very seldom.
  • It's hard to get rid of them, but harder still to find storage space for all of them.
  • I'll tell myself, hey, maybe one of my friends would enjoy this or one of the friends I have yet to make in the future would enjoy this.
  • My games often find themselves becoming gifts.
  • There are games I would never part with. Even if I rarely play them, they just mean too much to me sentimentally.
  • There's just something locked away in here that I enjoy reminiscing about and it creates a value or feeling I have towards the game that I don't want to get rid of it.
  • I get attached to the games I purchase as well. I don't want my shelving to look bare.
  • The funny thing is though, isn't it about parenting? You try to do something like that to instill a good idea and then you can create this nervousness, this anxiety in your kid because now they're worried about losing something.
  • If I ever have to sell a game, I would rather give it to someone with the interest of starting that person in the wonderful world of board gaming.
  • My solution is research. a lot of research before purchasing a game. Therefore, I have no games that I want to get rid of.
  • Dungeon craws are my thing. They each do something different and I'm not going to throw any of them away. They are my heart.

  • For me it's quite important let's say you find out about the game or somebody suggests it to you a game you know that you know just like in this game have you heard this my automatic response would be to go to war game get calm page and then look at it and in my eyes guys from the title do the I remember it's on the on the desktop anyway I think on on the mobile phone or mobile the fastest different the title and obviously the picture make sure it's the right game and then my eyes go to the right down for mechanics first thing every time before going through the description
  • Mechanics for me it's the quickest one of the quickest way to find out what's the game's about
  • The mechanics are less important than the the tightness of the game
  • A giant tableau eventually breaks my brain
  • I think the perfect engine builder is is the one where you're basically winning or losing not on the quality of your engine but when
  • Mechanics for me it's the quickest one of the quickest way to find out what's the game's about.
  • I think overall for me the mechanics are less important than the the tightness of the game.
  • You want the actions that other players are taking to have a significant impact on your options or the profitability in your options.
  • Simultaneous action and turn order drafting.
  • Colome is another one I can see up there on the shelf with simultaneous oh yes he's got that same happy pigs thing yeah where you don't want to pick the most popular action and you've got a look at what around what people can do because again you can you can get yourself stuck in a situation where there's only one obvious thing for you to do and if that happens it's that's it I don't want to lose that for nobody so you gotta feed that into your strategy.

  • they don't all translate perfectly well
  • the i think what works very well with this sort of thing is that it does let you play a game quickly
  • the thing that doesn't translate well and that's cards particularly cards with text
  • that's where the app versions of games do flourish is that they introduce things that make the game easier to play
  • the challenge of changing from digital then from board game to digital game is like the space where is the focus where your eyes are seeing like the cards there's no way you can include all the cards all at once
  • it would tell you when there is no longer a tile that existed that would go somewhere
  • no one plays carcass on like that
