Description

In the 2400s, mankind begins to terraform the planet Mars. Giant corporations, sponsored by the World Government on Earth, initiate huge projects to raise the temperature, the oxygen level, and the ocean coverage until the environment is habitable. In Terraforming Mars, you play one of those corporations and work together in the terraforming process, but compete for getting victory points that are awarded not only for your contribution to the terraforming, but also for advancing human infrastructure throughout the solar system, and doing other commendable things.

As a player, you acquire unique project cards (from over two hundred different ones) by buying them to your hand. The cards can give you immediate bonuses, as well as increasing your production of different resources. Many cards also have requirements and they become playable when the temperature, oxygen, or ocean coverage increases enough. Buying cards is costly, so there is a balance between buying cards and actually playing them. Standard Projects are always available to complement your hand of cards. Your basic income, as well as your basic score, are based on your Terraform Rating. However, your income is boosted by your production, and VPs are also gained from many other sources.

You keep track of your production and resources on your player board. The game uses six types of resources: MegaCredits, Steel, Titanium, Plants, Energy, and Heat. On the game board, you compete for the best places for your city tiles, ocean tiles, and greenery tiles. You also compete for different Milestones and Awards worth many VPs. Each round is called a generation and consists of the following phases:

1) Player order shifts clockwise.
2) Research phase: All players buy cards from four privately drawn.
3) Action phase: Players take turns doing 1-2 actions from these options: Playing a card, claiming a Milestone, funding an Award, using a Standard project, converting plant into greenery tiles (and raising oxygen), converting heat into a temperature raise, and using the action of a card in play. The turn continues around the table (sometimes several laps) until all players have passed.
4) Production phase: Players get resources according to their terraform rating and production parameters.

When the three global parameters (temperature, oxygen, ocean) have all reached their required levels, the terraforming is complete, and the game ends after that generation. Combine your Terraform Rating and other VPs to determine the winning corporation!

  • Casual gamers aren't malicious. They aren't sitting in rooms plotting to water down the hobby.
  • The confrontation is not the problem. It was always the point.
  • The hobby is not ruined, but it is under genuine pressure from a commercial logic that treats mechanical depth as an obstacle and player conflict as a liability.

Quotes (from this video)
  • It's okay when people don't like a game that you like. We all have different opinions.
  • The board gaming space should be a welcoming space. People should feel free and welcome to post whatever opinions they want without being attacked.
  • Don't yuck their yum.
  • When your comment or when the flood of comments are overwhelmingly about how Terraforming Mars is incredibly popular, I don't know what you're missing... what you're effectively telling the person is that the the the acceptance of Terraforming Mars as a great game is more important than the acceptance of the experience that they had.
  • Number one, we all have a bias towards ourselves. We should do our best to recognize it whenever possible. And number two, and more importantly, for the sake of this conversation and the space that we are in, the board gaming space should be a welcoming space.

  • Cloudspire is one of those games that I would absolutely love to play more of and there are plans for a rematch between me and JP on my birthday week in July.
  • The Graft is one of the new factions that just came out and it doesn't have a fortress. What it does is it has one piece on the board which moves around and that is their fortress. So, it's actually a mobile piece and it's big amoeba type thing.
  • That's that's nonsense. Um where things like saving the game, the math, the upkeep is made trivial by the video.
  • I have Frostpunk the board game. I have Frostpunk the computer game. They're the same game, but they are entirely different experiences.
  • As much as I love Agemonia, it's a 30-minute setup each time we play because we're having to get all of these things out and these things and these things and these things. And that's just the nature of the game.

  • I need to go one grade lower than that because I think I've definitely got Terraforming Mars bias here.

Pros
  • Satisfying engine-building arc
  • Theme handled with scientific authenticity
  • Playing a chain of cards that unlocks a production combo is a specific kind of joy
Cons
  • Does not respect your time
  • Significant downtime between turns with 3+ players
  • Watching deliberation is exhausting
  • Components irritate (cubes slide off, cardstock/graphic design look cheap)
  • Random draw can hand one player a beautiful synergy and another a hand that never comes together
  • Long enough that being stuck in an underperforming engine for 2 hours is a real punishment
Thematic elements

  • Mars

Quotes (from this video)
  • A game can top every ranking, win every award, sell out every print run, and still sit on your table and leave you completely cold.
  • A game being widely loved does not mean it was built for you.
  • Your table is not our table.
  • If we are hard on a game you adore, that is a data point about us, not a verdict on you.
  • Race for the Galaxy instead.
  • It delivers the same engine-building tableau satisfaction, the same thematic richness of building a galactic civilization card by card in under 45 minutes.
  • Brass: Birmingham.
  • It is a game I admire far more than I enjoy.
  • Dune Imperium again.
  • Two of our 11 alternatives are the same game. I think that tells you something honest about what our table actually wants out of an evening.

  • Every game I've ever bought, I've bought for a good reason. At least that's what I tell myself.
  • I don't watch playthroughs cuz playthroughs tend to be too long.
  • I think it's just the hype and how much money this project's making and all this buzz around it was making me think I should get on this now, and I just know that I'm going to get the cards, maybe play it twice, and then never play it again.
  • If it can fit in this 4x4 Kallax, then it will stay. If it doesn't fit, then something's got to go.
  • Will I still enjoy the game after 10 plays? It's not a question I ask myself.

  • We're going to use Wingspan, Scythe, and Terraforming Mars and Planet Unknown.
  • Scythe is a very specific puzzle.
  • Can't believe I skipped a turn on Wingspan. That is going to sting cuz Wingspan is not a particularly difficult realm.
  • Garrett says, 'Tough realm combo because you need pretty exact numbers for Wingspan eventually. And oh, one and a three, another low one. And I'm best served by exact for some pretty precise numbers in Scoville Tier, too. And it is easy to fall behind.'
  • You are correct, Garrett. It is a tough combination, but that's what makes the puzzle fun for me in Rolling Realms that you have these different combinations to work with.
  • All right. Take care. Let me know how you scored in the comments.

Pros
  • Dual-layered boards prevent resources from being bumped and lost.
  • Staggered spaces on dual-layer boards make intentional cube movement difficult, increasing accuracy.
  • Provides clear and accurate tracking of all resources.
  • Superior to thin cardboard player boards.
  • Enhances sturdiness and accuracy of gameplay.
Cons
  • Original cardboard player boards are easily bumped, causing loss of progress.

Quotes (from this video)
  • These are going to be the top five components that make a game experience better.
  • The organizational roll mat, and this one does it particularly well.
  • Some dice I would say that are too big is the Die from Rolling Realms.
  • The game that totally rocks with dice is made up entirely of dice.
  • Dice can really make the game fun. Dice can make the game clear and easier to understand, um or they can essentially get in the way.
  • These cards are gorgeous.
  • These cards are just stunning. They're stunning. They're well designed. They feel good.
  • So, my number two are dual layered player boards.
  • This is crucial to experiencing and enjoying Terraforming Mars, for example, or any game that has this kind of feature.
  • My runner-up for components that makes a game play better is having great organizational inserts and/or cubbies or boxes inside of your game.
  • So, for me, the Kinfire Delve card decks are 100% my high-water mark for card quality, design, really cool features that have some of those raised features, and some of them have the gold foil.
  • My number one is all about the feel of something and having something that lasts longer than cardboard.
  • So, the original game is good. But because this game is all about drawing components and having bits in your hand and having them rub up against each other in a sack while you shake your sack around cuz you want to get all everything all mixed up together really well. You've got these bits, but honestly, if you're going to play over and over and over again the way that we play, you want to get these bits.
  • So, having the upgraded bits in Quacks is going to uh preserve your game. It's going to preserve the components because you are manhandling those elements, those ingredients, all the time and again.
  • Makes the game better, makes the game feel better, but also makes the game last longer.

  • But even when I played for the first time, it does not mean anything until you score a goal.
  • It's very easy to grok that you want to put your goals out first and then get the resources, but it's so hard to implement until you played it a couple of times.
  • I really enjoy this game. I like teaching it because it's one of those lighter strategy games that really get people into the mindset or into trying heavier strategy games.
  • And it is so much fun to just watch people act like they don't care initially about whatever green team. And then like when they're winning like I have I have 17 points.
  • I like teaching heavy games when it's very logical.
  • The fun thing about Settlers is that you only are teaching kind of like 70% of the game because when the aliens come out, they have their own set of rules, and you cannot teach them until they actually show up.
  • But if you're a hobbyist it's like this like when can we play this again? It's It is so my wheelhouse. It's not even funny.
  • And it doesn't outstay its welcome. It's really pretty at the table.
  • It's not a stressful real time game.

  • Some cards have prerequisites that may be difficult to meet.
  • The cost of sponsoring awards increases with each one funded.
  • Potential for confusion with 'Jovian tags' and volcano tiles without clear rulebook explanation.

  • In the relatively near future, Earth has a serious overcrowding problem - humankind has to spread out to another planet, or perish.
  • You and your friends play corporations that are competing to... terraform Mars (as it says on the tin)
  • Whichever player has contributed the most to making Mars more livable wins the game.
  • Terraforming Mars is mostly an economic, resource management game.
  • And every round, your actual MegaCredits income is this number... plus this number.
  • Once all nine ocean tiles have been placed on Mars... and the temperature has been raised to 8 degrees... and the oxygen level is 14%... that triggers the end of the game.
