Description

In Ark Nova, you will plan and design a modern, scientifically managed zoo. With the ultimate goal of owning the most successful zoological establishment, you will build enclosures, accommodate animals, and support conservation projects all over the world. Specialists and unique buildings will help you in achieving this goal.

Each player has a set of five action cards to manage their gameplay, and the power of an action is determined by the slot the card currently occupies. The cards in question are:

CARDS: Allows you to gain new zoo cards (animals, sponsors, and conservation project cards).
BUILD: Allows you to build standard or special enclosures, kiosks, and pavilions.
ANIMALS: Allows you to accommodate animals in your zoo.
ASSOCIATION: Allows your association workers to carry out different tasks.
SPONSORS: Allows you to play a sponsor card in your zoo or to raise money.

255 cards featuring animals, specialists, special enclosures, and conservation projects, each with a special ability, are at the heart of Ark Nova. Use them to increase the appeal and scientific reputation of your zoo and collect conservation points.

  • The best tends to be more of that strive for objectivity you know people going like well okay I guess chess is the best game ever or you know like uh but anytime where you get into that like real academic area there there's almost like a oh fine okay I'll admit that this one is probably the best or you know this or that.
  • I think that there is a lot more subjective in every sort of evaluation and I do think that those intangibles should be considered in what we try to evaluate as you know like meaningful best reviews.
  • I think that there is a lot more subjective in every
  • Island root and terraforming Mars were the top three

Quotes (from this video)
  • Ark Nova is my favorite game of all time.
  • Look at how gorgeous that thing is. Oh my god, I am drooling. This is such a pretty insert to get out.
  • So, inserts I think are worth it.
  • The money you get in those two games is garbage.
  • I do have a lot of inserts in a lot of my games. Now, some of them I probably shouldn't have bought because the game doesn't get played often enough.
  • Upgrade it from something that's crap to something that's really good. Don't upgrade something that's already good to something that's just a bit more good. It's not worth the money.
  • People don't respect wood enough. Wood pieces are great.
  • I don't care about miniatures in games now. I'm getting sick and tired of gray miniatures in all my games.
  • The Folded Space insert for Civilization and New Dawn is a thing of genius.
  • Do bling your games is good, but remember that you're paying a lot of money for it.
  • Live comedy these days has suffered a lot because of all the political correctness nonsense.
  • The golden age of comedians is sadly dying out.

  • this is absolutely my number one for games you could play forever because I have played many games of this this game.
  • This is basically Scrabble meets Dominion.
  • It is brutal, it is harrowing, it beats you up, and it requires near-perfect precision play.

  • the puzzle here never gets old.
  • Wonderland's War is so good.
  • Forge War is the game Isaac Childres put out before Gloomhaven.
  • Billy says it's a crafting game. That makes sense as you are forging Are you forging wars or are you forging swords or are you forging dwarves? Are you dwarves who forge the swords in a war? Maybe maybe all of them. Maybe all of it. Oh, cool. That sounds cool. I'll have to keep Is it still in print, Billy? Do you know? I don't know if if it's still in print or not.
  • Unfortunately, Richard, the masses have spoken and it is Everdell that is better than Wondrous Creatures in a 58% of the vote win.
  • If I had a top 12 people list of who I would want to play games with forever, Ruel would be my numbers 1 to 11. The 12th spot is still open, so I am taking applications, but you better get in quick because Ruel's very charming and he's very handsome, too. And I like not looking at the board game, but looking into his beautiful, beautiful eyes.

Quotes (from this video)
  • I think that there are a lot of games that even if they're not built specifically for two players, the draw to play those games that was there at four players or three players is still there at two players.
  • I think that some parts of Aries expedition becomes a lot stronger at two players than it does at three or four players.
  • I have my sandbox, you have your sandbox. This can be great at two players.
  • Well, let me tell you, nothing is going to create a marital uh battle like someone not being entirely focused on a game of sale.
  • I can kind of be doing something else while playing.
  • So to me, Ark Nova is ideal for two players.
  • Peak Spirit Island is two-player or two spirit if you're playing solo and you have uh and you want to do double-handed
  • However, it's too bigrain for me to feel like I'm up for that.
  • I just like them at two players. You know, I don't need the extra player count. That's the right amount of opposition that I need for those.

  • Endeavor Deep Sea is very, very high to the top of the list.
  • I am 90% sure they would say yes.
  • My current three favorite games that don't have any kind of space or science fantasy whatever uh element to them is through the ages feast roadin and Maraca.
  • So, yeah, it's very much a multiplayer solitaire game, but it's very good.
  • I believe it's a much improve a much better version of Hrien's Wall and I love the way that the combat works against the actual the the puzzle of trying to defend yourself against the different forces that are attacking you. I really like it. So yeah, Anarchy gets a big thumbs up for me.
  • Flam Rouge, fantastic game. Definitely Flam Rouge.
  • I personally don't feel it's right for me to do them at the end of the year because most of the games I will have only played once and some of them I won't have even played.
  • I personally prefer Flam Rouge to heat.
  • Anything that wins Spiel Dejars will go on to sell way more copies, especially in the family category if it gets that Spiel Dejars award on it, which they have to pay for. They have to pay to have that award put on there, which is how Spiel Dejares makes its money. But it will sell many, many copies of the game.

  • Devir Games really need to make less games in less games in a year because then they might actually put out some belters rather than just a bunch of meh games.
  • It's using the conveyor belt mechanism that I adore from uh art from AR Nova and Civilization: The New Dawn, but there's only four slots.
  • All right, so this is giving me a very um pursuit to happiness vibe here, but with a slightly different take on it.
  • It's a very dry mechanical game.
  • This artwork looks nice. Oh, wow. Oh god. Yeah, that is pretty.
  • I like Underwater Cities. It's on my shelf. Um I like this game a lot.
  • Cascadia, which is already probably one of the best gateway games in existence.
  • So you've got new artwork, new graphic design, updated mechanics, wooden meeples, uh same quick play time that gives a 4x feel in under 90 minutes.
  • This is an expansion that's not going to really add that much to the game?
  • It's basically the snorefest of themes, but this is a new version of it.

  • So, it's going to be a little bit cooler this Shen Con. In the past, it's been very, very hot. So, hopefully it's cooler and nice so I don't get all sweaty and weird, which is a default setting of mine. So, sweaty and weird.
  • This is a quick picture of everybody.
  • We are officially in the will call line getting a few tickets that we hadn't didn't have a chance to ship to us. It's going really fast today. I feel it's going to be a lot slower on future days, but yeah, things are kicking off real soon here.
  • It is bright. It is colorful and it is air conditioned.
  • We are going to be getting ready to play sanctuary and I'm pretty excited cuz we're at an all girls table. So that's going to be awesome.
  • So, we got we just got done playing a playthrough of Sanctuary, which is a lighter version of Ark Nova.
  • This is one of the games that was on my top 10 that I was excited to see at Gen Con.
  • This is a Viking route from Ari's games.
  • We really enjoy this game. We don't get to play it nearly as much as we want to, but Ryan does play it a lot with the girls um which is fun and they get to like build decks together and then they like fight each other on it. So that's really fun, too. So looking forward to it.
  • I had more fun because of the time we spent together.
  • If you like any of the style of this game visually, it is 100% him. He's the guy who drew the pictures. He's the guy who wrote the story.

  • It is not a reimplementation of that, but in tile laying form, but it does have a lot of familiarity.
  • It is a tile lane game and a tile lane game only.
  • If you are a hardcore Arc Nova fan and someone who just prefers heavier games, you might play this and go, 'Oh, well, it doesn't quite do what Arc Nova does. That is by design for sure.'
  • I think this game is better for it.
  • But then coming into it the second time, knowing what it was and like celebrating the differences for Mark Nova, I think I was able to enjoy it a lot more the second time.
  • It's streamlined.
  • I wouldn't say it's dumbed down.
  • The spatial puzzling is very important.

  • This is going to be a bumper issue.
  • Builders of Bow's Gate, designed by Matthew Dunston, published by Whiz Kids, who have been clients of mine for many years.
  • Unfortunately, some of the wording on some of the cards made us think that a certain thing worked a particular way.
  • For me, not really. And Builders of Balders's Gate is in the same category.
  • It actually felt quite thematic, especially with the with the boss fight at the end.
  • It is still my favorite game in the genre of fantasy cooperative adventure games.
  • And for me, like I've said most months, I prefer it to Gloom Haven.
  • I had this game where at the point I could have ended the game and scored over a hundred, I think the next highest player was on about 40.
  • So, I would say if you do play spellbook, try not to go for the rush end by just putting things on your thing.
  • Let the game breathe a little bit and let everybody get a few spells because it's a it's a much more much more interesting game.
  • So, as of this morning, we are on 1,182 Patreon supporters.
  • Unfortunately, that means it's dropped since last month.
  • And I will be absolutely honest with you here. You know that I'm a very emotional person and I take a lot of things personally.
  • So, let's try and get 1,200 patron supporters.
  • Please don't think this is me begging for money or trying to guilt you into supporting me or anything like that.
  • So, we've made three donations to charity at £500 each.

Quotes (from this video)
  • So huge thank you to Phil for not just providing us with the panels, but for all of the technical support that he's given us with regards to our sound issues that we've been having in the new studio.

  • Marvel United, baby.
  • This is a great co-op game. Also kind of on the lighter side. I really, really enjoy this one. I I freaking love this game.

  • Jimmy, what do we even own?
  • Throw out some games that you like.
  • I feel like inventors and scholars is over there.
  • No, this is not what I thought.
  • Well, you've got wavefares right now. Quote unquote wavefares.

  • This is Star Wars Rebellion, everybody. Thank you very much.
  • It's that big. Wow. Okay then.
  • Pick number eight for Nick.
  • How does he keep hitting it?
  • Real talk though.
  • I feel like a lot of like square and rectangular euros.
  • I was just about to say this is Arino. It is not.
  • Oh, that's thicker than I thought it'd be.
  • Once again, right up on the microphone. We're sorry.
  • This is distilled.
  • I got me some isats and I'm excited to have a good polyomino game.
  • I want Grand Austria Hotel.
  • We have too many big games, guys.
  • From the bottom, a square and a rectangle feel very similar.
  • Dude, right.
  • I feel legitimately I mean,
  • Is the top dented?
  • Is the top supposed to be dented?
  • All righty. Okay, I got two more. Yeah, I got two more games. I got to go I got to start going lighter. I've been doing too much big stuff.
  • You're always concerned about that.
  • A well-rounded collection.
  • So, here's the thing with these drafts, y'all.
  • Mike picks his favorite games. I try to pick an actually good collection.
  • No one's asking you to do that.
  • The prompt for these is to collect a wellrounded collection. Mike just picks his favorite games. So get out in the comments comments. Let us know.
  • I win. I win these because I actually choose.
  • It's not about making a It's about making the best list.
  • The best list is the best list for most people. Not for you.
  • I'm the one making the list.
  • No. Silly.
  • I'm picking foof girkin. This is a great trick tank game. It's called five cucumbers.
  • I feel the green how it's green. I think this is firkin.
  • All right. So, since Nick's out here sassing me.
  • All right. This is your final pick. Do what you want.
  • I'm going to go back to our drawers.
  • I'm looking for the Kinfire Delve games.
  • I feel like I stopped the Oh, wait. Hold on.
  • Whatever this was, I'm not choosing it.
  • Oh, wait. Even better.
  • This is a long thin rectangle? This might be uh the Fellowship of the Ring trick taking game.
  • Pick Pick. Pick what you think your heart says.
  • This one's in shrink. This is a fat boy.
  • I thought I had Lord of the Rings. My last picture.
  • Oh, you know what? Hold on. This has a unique box.
  • This has this little pink thing. I think this is Volano. Volamino. Volimo.
  • Am I stepping on a game?
  • This is I think Volano. And so it's got that little
  • that's my 10th pick. And on the light one day, I'm wellrounded as heck. Good god. Now I really don't know where I am, man.
  • Oh god. Sorry. I hit me in the face.
  • I
  • Yes, it is. Uh, it is a tough game to get into. Uh, and I love that.
  • I do love the dice placement for this. It's a really cool game, you know, this is where you're gonna go draft dice and then send them to the cathedral.
  • It was like, you know, like, really tough to get into. So, you know, like, I do love that and that's what we're all about.
  • You have your own story, your own world that you're building.
  • There's a ton of strategy, a ton of different things you can do in this game.
  • It's a legacy game, which means that the game evolves and changes as you play it.
  • There's a lot of political intrigue and backstabbing.

  • If you need something just super fun for a party, it I'll be buying it for sure. It's it's it the production value is amazing. So much fun. I highly highly recommend this game.
  • So it almost feels
  • I had as much fun playing it as I did teaching it.
  • It almost feels like programming it.
  • They call it an auto battler uh after sort of the video games that are auto battlers but tag team.
  • It had the vibes of flip seven, but not the mechanics. You're rolling dice and there's all these different denominations of money
  • The rub is that if you haven't banked your money... you bust and you lose all your unbanked money.
  • So, it definitely I missed this. This is that's interesting.
  • and it was definitely if you like playing flip 7, you'll like this sort of game. There's a lot of these gambly, you know, have a night with hot streak, flip seven and rolly when it comes out. Uh it was just a blast.
  • And that I think speaks to why the trend not only at Gen Con, but the trend in the hobby is going towards more of those types of it's it's at least definitely the trend in my personal taste.

Quotes (from this video)
  • Through the Ages: A New Story of Civilization is the engine builder to end all engine builders.
  • In Twilight Struggle, one of the more interesting times in history is played out. And I love that each card is a real event that happened.
  • Gaia Project built on Terrammystica and perfected the form. It's the best one.
  • Gloom Haven: Jaws of the Lion has the best tutorial system I have ever seen in a game, and I think it legitimately creates new board gamers constantly because of the way they make it so approachable.
  • Each Spirit in Spirit Island can be played over and over as you learn how to master their abilities, and there are so much content in the box. It also just plays amazing solo.
  • Dune Imperium Uprising took Dune Imperium to a whole new level of scale and scope, and it's got them worms.
  • It's impossible to have a bad time playing Star Wars Rebellion, especially if you love Star Wars. Okay, mostly only if you love Star Wars, but it's really fun. It's Lord of the Rings in a box, and it's perfect.
  • For a solid like 6 years, Terraforming Mars was absolutely the king of the board game hobby. Unreal staying power.
  • Dune Imperium uses art based on the movies, but it doesn't feel at all like a movie tie-in cash grab.
  • The scale and epic stories that come out of Twilight Imperium fourth edition make it everlasting. Every time you play, you get a permanent memory and story. It's truly impressive.
  • The sheer amount of content in Gloom Haven and the card play makes this dungeon crawler a Eurogamer's delight.
  • Ark Nova takes Terraforming Mars' cardplay in Civilization's action card mechanisms and put it into a theme we're just way more interested in. just the absolute pinnacle of mashing up mechanisms into a masterpiece.
  • Pandemic Legacy Season 1 has deserved every single ounce of acclaim and accolades it's received over the years. It was an absolute phenomena when it came out.
  • I don't want to say anything nice about this game. I don't want to say anything nice about this game. I don't like this game though.
  • Fine. Fine.
  • Brass Birmingham is objectively a board game. Done. Easy. That was nice. Words that are written.
  • Brass rhymes with ass. Got him. You're done.
  • Brass Birmingham has one of the best examples of positive player interaction and a game I'd actually seek out to play for a player. Was that so hard?
  • So, that was one nice thing about every single game in the Board Game Geek top 100. Many games that we actually don't even really like, but there's always something nice to say. Exactly.
  • Just engage.
  • We had a lot of fun making it.

  • It's very clever in the way that it works between rounds because in between rounds, once you've played most of your cards, one of them passes to the player to the right, and then you will pick up the stacks of cards, but you will keep them in the order in which they are.
  • my initial impression was that I was disappointed.
  • So, yeah, it's a light card game. It plays really well. I have some minor concerns about replayability just because there's not that many cards in the shared deck, but having played three times now, and every game did play differently for me, yeah, it's fine for for what it is. It's fine.
  • It is a little bit more complex than your normal trick taking game, but not so much that it's going to be a problem.
  • Agamonia, it's still fantastic.
  • I absolutely love this game and I love what they've done with this game.
  • But that feels non-theatic and also a bit too punishing.
  • Life is short. I have limited time and if we were to play Primal with the official rules, then that campaign playthrough won't be 12 parts. It will be 25 parts and it will take us two years to do it.
  • I think this game is a little bit special.

  • March of the Ants is uh from Tim Eisner. So, same guy who did uh Canopy and some guy who did Leaf. Um, and I have talked highly about both of those games. Uh, this one is a reimplementation of an older game, March of the Ants. This is an area control game, quite an aggressive area control game.
  • Now, when you put those two things together along with Board of Dice, you usually expect a very complicated, heavy, oh my god, there's so many rules type game.
  • The demo did a good job of teasing me, thinking, 'Wow, this game didn't feel that complicated.' It was It was very in-depth.
  • This could be one of the better David Turczi games I've played in recent uh you know tried out in recent um years.
  • They didn't want to just make it White Castle with two players because to be honest, White Castle worked best as a two-player game.
  • This is a two-player area control game um where basically you have followers, dudes on the map.
  • But it's beautifully produced. You got these translucent dice, these lovely artwork cards, these wooden followers.
  • Yes. Sorry, there is a spider on one of these pictures. I didn't see that coming, but uh I've seen scarier spiders, but still

  • Movie Tricks is really good. Movie Tricks is from Chitty Fox Games. It's a trick taker, but it's got a bit of a kick and I really like that.
  • Severton is a game from Vlades Shaattle. You may have heard of Vlad Shaattle, but he's got a new game this year called Severton. It's the first time he's had a new game published for about 10 years. And a little bit like Dutch Resistance: Orange Shall Overcome, it's a cooperative game where you're trying to complete missions. And it's really, really good. And not many people are talking about it.
  • The new version for me is an improved version of the game. So, if you like Ingenious or Genal, whatever you want to call it, then have a look at the 3D version. That was really good.
  • we played this game called drop alter and I absolutely blitzed it. I mean I think I won I think I won six of five of the six rounds that we played or something like that.

  • Project L is another really really good game and I really like Project L and uh and that is a completely abstract game.

  • Talisman. 34 year gap between playing it.
  • as much as A Trespass Odyssey was the most complicated game that I've ever played and some of the rules were extremely confusing and we weren't sure of some of the rules after 25 games, that game had things in it which I have never had that experience from any other game ever.
  • And I've heard that Kingdoms for Lawn offers a similar experience.
  • But when I'm playing it solo, if I'm not live streaming it, my brain because of the weird memory issues that I have, literally gets to a point and I go up and it just stops and my short-term memory disappears and I'm like, I have no idea not only what I was doing, but where we are, what phase we're on, or anything like that.
  • live streaming it and talking to the audience and keeping things going is the only way that I can actually get my brain to, you know, work and be able to cope with playing the actual game itself.

  • Card Drafting — While not explicitly stated as drafting, the mention of acquiring cards for partnerships implies a card acquisition mechanism.
  • Set Collection — Collecting animals and projects.
  • tile laying — The game features great tile-laying for habitats.
  • Victory point tracking — The game has two victory point tracks: profit and ecological impact. The game ends when these overlap, and their final positions determine the score.

  • Man, how many uh Stephan Felds am I talking about today? Was that the second, the third? I don't know. But that's why Stephen Feld is the greatest.
  • And this time he's taking on roll to move. Maybe the most hated board game mechanism of all time because of course that's, you know, Monopoly. You roll your dice, you see where you land, you get what you get. Isn't that great? No. It's a really terrible, antiquated, outdated, uh, mechanism. And yet, um, Stefan Feld found a way to make it awesome.
  • This is definitely what people would like to, you know, pjoratively call a point salad. But to me, that's a good thing because that just means, oh my gosh, there's so many different things you can do.
  • The problem with the expansions is it makes the game longer. I wish it didn't uh because now we have to spend we take more turns because we we go through all those dice, right?
  • Are you sick of Stephen Feld? If so, too bad because number 41 is Forum Trainum. uh not his most well-known game, but one of my favorites. I think this might be my number three highest ranked feld game of all time.
  • It really deserves more attention.
  • As you've seen, just gotten a small glimpse of what life is really like on the road. Because when your house is made to drive down the motorway at 50, 60, 70 mph, things shake loose. Stuff happens and maintenance is always required.

Quotes (from this video)
  • So much potential but it's sad it just missed the mark.
  • Maybe not one that I'm looking for because, you know, I tend to like my worker placement games to be a little bit more complex, a little bit heavier.
  • A game where again I completely applaud the concept and the the premise of the game, but I felt it's a bit of a one-trick pony, a bit of an experimental game rather than a good one.
  • It's a good design.
  • I think maybe it has a much lower ceiling when it comes to replayability than the original.
  • It's so well done.
  • Really enjoyed this one. It's going to stay around my collection for sure because again, I don't have anything like it at all.
  • Don't let the cutesy artwork deceive you with this game. It does actually offer a lot of of gameplay.
  • Brilliant filler, a lot of a lot of return in the time you'll invest in this game.
