Description

The year is 1926, and it is the height of the Roaring Twenties. Flappers dance till dawn in smoke-filled speakeasies drinking alcohol supplied by rum runners and the mob. It's a celebration to end all celebrations in the aftermath of the war to end all wars.

Yet a dark shadow grows in the city of Arkham. Alien entities known as Ancient Ones lurk in the emptiness beyond space and time, writhing at the gates between worlds. These gates have begun to open and must be closed before the Ancient Ones make our world their ruined domination.

Only a handful of investigators stand against the Arkham Horror. Will they Prevail?

Arkham Horror is a cooperative adventure game themed around H.P Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos. Players choose from 16 Investigators and take to the streets of Arkham. Before the game, one of the eight Ancient Ones is chosen and it's up to the Investigators to prevent it from breaking into our world. During the course of the game, players will upgrade their characters by acquiring skills, allies, items, weapons, and spells. It's up to the players to clean out the streets of Arkham by fighting many different types of monsters, but their main goal is to close gates to other dimensions that are opening up around town. With too many gates open the Ancient One awakens and the players only have one last chance to save the world - defeat the Ancient One in combat!

Quotes (from this video)
  • I've said for the longest time that I really want to just make more content.
  • I have said for the longest time that I really want to just make more content um and it's not so much that I want to make content that's going to be like watched with thousands of views or anything like that it's more of I just want to like use my creativity more than I have in the past.
  • My penmanship is horrible so I mean if I ever wanted to like have dark and evil thoughts or whatever um all I'd had to do is just write them out on in a journal and no one would ever be able to decipher them.
  • I don't really have any like positive or negative thoughts on that it's one of those it is what it is type things.
  • Arkham Horror was the game that got me into this whole hobby it was the game that got me this YouTube channel which is how I got a job in board game publishing.
  • The design of Arkham Horror second edition is dated.
  • Functionally the game is is clunky as all all get out.
  • You don't play Arkham horor second edition to win you play it to tell the story.
  • It's weird I guess how life turns out and the and the and the the doors that open and close and the windows of opportunity that appear.

Quotes (from this video)
  • The people who bought it really enjoyed it were like oh this is very cool and I like this and I'm very proud of the book as well because I think it's a cool rule set and I also think that the layout on it went very well took a long time but I really enjoyed the way that it came out
  • Majestic 13 did not sell all that well
  • Death Wizards has been out for a month and a couple of days and it has sold more copies than Majestic 13 has which came out 13 months ago
  • it's an indie game made by enemy spotted studios
  • so the games are shorter
  • it is a very highly tactical game
  • players must rely on their widths precise positioning and equipment to win forget about special rules rules in Army building in blackout it's all about raw tactics
  • we're kind of out cuz you talked about our our our game in your video recently and we are out of product now
  • kill team 3.0 better be good the whole obstruction line of sight has God awful
  • I would like them to change kill team drastically and make a third version and see how that works out I would kind of like them to go back to the old ways but I know I'm the only one who thinks that
  • Kingdom Death is a great example of a boutique game versus any that I've named so far
  • quar such a fantastic game love their minis
  • Fallout is the wild west of ips for me something I really can't bring myself to care about
  • it's the bombs dropped in 2077 which means that we like got to where we are now here in 2024 and then decided you know what's cool the 1950s let's go back to that and make thing and I'm like why did this happen
  • it's alternate history kind of Fallout is yes it's the future you know the bombs dropped in 2077 but the reason we got to that point was because the transistor was never invented so it that's that that's why things are different is because it's alternate history which never had clicked with me the entire time I've been playing those damn games
  • I am definitely interested in Fallout tactics
  • it was it was too board gamey for me frankly like that was the problem
  • I'm liking death Wizards a lot I'm currently working on building up some minis so I can play it nice

Quotes (from this video)
  • we have familiar faces in some of the investigators like Jenny Barnes and Joe diamond and Monteray Jack we have worn out places in Arkham like City Hall the sanitarium the hospital The Boarding House on the board we have people running around in circles around the neighborhood of Arkham and of course when we go to Earth's dreamlands we are uh where the have the potential of dying in a dream
  • I approached my look at Arkham hor first edition as I might a video game demake
  • it's been mostly a good and positive thing if a little bit on the expensive side
  • everything is a little more primitive a little flipp flimsier in the cards uh and in the board the board's just kind of a fold out paper map but everything is here if a little bit more reductive but what's most important is it's still really fun and it still does a fantastic job of creating memorable moments at the table
  • chaosium didn't even take the time to make new art that is hilarious
  • this is more focused on the action and I think that's just having that subtitle there I think is a really good clue of where lonus was coming from in his attempts and I think his his successful attempts to create an adventure game a pulp Adventure game set in the world of the Cthulhu Mythos
  • even though it is Co-op there is also still a little bit of a competitive nature to the game and I think back then it was just really hard for people to wrap their hands heads around a game that wasn't competitive in some way
  • the roll to move works in this game because almost all of the monsters except for I think the hounds of tendal uh they stay out of the locations
  • I was surprised by how much I enjoyed my time with this but I don't think I would encourage most people to seek it out
  • it is so old it is kind of archaic it is primitive it is simple and reductive but it's still really fun
  • I'm so happy that I got the opportunity to to experience this game it's one that I've known about for a long time and I kind of feel I just feel very happy that I was able to experience this kind of a piece of of of gaming history

  • Player Elimination (Modified) — If an investigator is eliminated, a new one is chosen and play continues, preventing total player elimination.
  • roll-and-move — Players roll dice to determine movement around the board. This mechanic is considered to work in this game due to the danger of moving on the streets and avoiding monsters.
  • Set Collection — Collecting items, spells, and trophies is part of gameplay, contributing to investigator capabilities and victory conditions.
  • Variable player powers — Investigators have different stats and starting abilities, though in the first edition, these are less distinct than in later versions.

  • space and uh uh time kind of like works against you as a board game player collector as you gain more and more stuff to add to your collection you run out of stuff for places for that stuff you end up renting a uh a storage unit like I do
  • enough is enough they they they have their 200 300 400 plus games in their collection they're looking at the the the shelves and their wall they realize just how much is there
  • Publishers are also recognizing the fact that those things exist and the the market for what we create is changing
  • give me one box that has all the stuff that I need to play this game and yeah that box might be huge but it's one box and it's all contained of that one thing
  • I think we're getting away from that and and and also expansions for games just don't really come out that often anymore
  • do you think that uh back in the day if you will like when Arkham Horror second edition came out and then there' be another box like the exact same size as the base box that would come out you know like Dunwich or or uh have to all the name miskatonic was an expansion

  • it's size is driving it more than the numbers and as I said it's it's got a it's got to shrink down to mostly this room and there are big gaps but yeah it'll happen

  • I've played both extensively and I would say Death May Die is better in my opinion.

Pros
  • Discovery of glyphs is central to progression.
  • Mechanics like moving platforms and flooded locations add to the challenge.
  • Enemy mechanics, like persistent constructs, create an escalating threat.
Cons
  • Frustration with repeated enemy spawns ('persistent constructs').
  • Difficulty in managing resources and hand size, especially with weakness cards.
  • The scenario can feel like a race against time, with doom advancing.
  • Annoyance with specific mechanics or cards that hinder progress (e.g., Infernal Machinery).
Thematic elements
  • Exploring ancient machinery and hidden vaults to find artifacts.
  • Drowned city of Relia
Comparison games
none
Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Card draw and hand management — Players draw cards, manage their hand size, and utilize abilities that interact with their hand, discard pile, and deck.
  • Enemy Spawning and Hunter Keyword — Enemies spawn, and the 'Hunter' keyword means they move towards investigators. Persistent constructs spawn when others are defeated.
  • Flooded Locations — Locations can become partially or fully flooded, posing a threat to investigators by causing damage if they remain in a flooded location.
  • Glyph translation — Investigators can translate glyphs, which is a requirement to reveal a sealed chamber. Finding three glyphs advances the scenario.
  • Location Activation/Deactivation — Locations can be activated or deactivated, with scenario effects referencing their state. Resources are placed on activated locations.
  • Moving Platforms — A moving platform is used to navigate between locations, and can be swapped with adjacent vault locations using clues.
  • Skill Tests (Book, Combat, Evade) — Various skill tests are performed throughout the game, often with modifiers based on game state (e.g., flood level, activated locations).
  • Weakness cards — Players draw weakness cards that can have negative effects, such as costing actions or resources, or causing damage/horror.

Quotes (from this video)
  • So, the agenda. Bowels of the city.
  • When your turn begins, if your location is fully flooded, you struggle for air.
  • We also have the core here. And it says at the end of the round, if each vault location has been activated, then we can reveal the core.
  • So, I'll lose an action next turn and draw three cards now cuz one will be able to go in me under me boat when we check.
  • So, you want to try and fight an enemy every round? Just to not take the damage or succeed at fighting an enemy.
  • So, I'll take the action cuz this is before I have to check the hand limit, is it? This is drawing the card.
  • You find a persistent construct. You got something to fight.
  • It's annoying cuz they've got Hunter and when you kill one, the others come out.
  • So, that's seven V2. That's five V2. So, we don't get to do both things.
  • So, the inescapable is defeated yet again for now.
  • We found no way of like actually getting rid of him.
  • So, in the enemy phase, there's nothing. In the upkeep phase, the one I evaded wakes up as all of our cards.
  • So, we've got to move it at least twice to get anywhere new.
  • So, the core of the vault houses an elaborate control station.
  • We're obviously going to push the button.
  • Play it safe to erase one of your tasks. During the next scenario, you start with three extra resources, or you can play both sides for all they're worth, get two progress, but next scenario, you will not gain resources in the upkeep phase.
  • So, we have activated every single vault location.

Pros
  • The mulligan is a critical decision that sets the pace for the entire scenario.
  • Aggressive mulliganing (keeping only 1-2 cards) is recommended to find essential pieces.
  • Understanding your deck's role (fighter, cluever, flex, support) is crucial for mulligan decisions.
  • The deck's curve impacts mulligan priorities, with higher curves potentially needing economy cards.
  • Assets played earlier provide more value over the course of the game.
  • Skill cards are often considered 'glue' to make the deck run quicker but are not always essential for survival.
  • Survivors mulligan differently due to their cards being consistently applicable.
  • Campaign decks have different mulligan considerations than stand-alone decks.
Cons
  • Bad mulligans can be soul-crushing.
  • Consistently bad mulligans may indicate bad mulligan decisions or deck building choices.
  • Complicated or 'zany' combo decks tend to mulligan worse.
  • Certain cards, like Timely Intervention, may not be necessary in the opening hand.
  • Low economy in a deck can make mulliganing for expensive assets difficult.
Thematic elements

Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Combat — The Skids O'Toole deck is a fighter deck, focused on playing weapons and killing enemies. Players look for Robert Castaigne and guns like the Mauser or Luger in their opening hand.
  • Combo Deck — The Parallel Jim Culver deck is a ridiculous combo deck that uses Armageddon, Rod of Carnamagos, and curse tokens to cheese the game. Key assets are expensive, and economy is low, influencing mulligan decisions.
  • Deck Building — The curve of the deck is a consideration for your mulligan. If your deck runs a little bit higher, like maybe if you're sitting at uh nine cards at three or four, your emergency cashes or your economy might be more important for your mulligan.
  • investigate — The goal of the Lucius Galloway deck is to investigate. Players should look for cards like Magnifying Glass and Dr. Milan Christopher to help them investigate at six.
  • Mulligan — The mulligan is a very tricky thing to master, but it's arguably one of the most important decisions you're going to be making in an Arkham Horror scenario. Your mulligan is going to determine the pace at which you're start able to start the scenario and immediately give you an explanation like so so basically an example of how your tempo is going to go for the remainder of the scenario. Mulliganing is very crucial and a good mulligan versus a bad mulligan can be absolutely soul-crushing.
  • Support — The Carson Sinclair deck is an ultimate support deck, focused on healing people, getting clues, poking enemies, and keeping the team alive. Stand Together is a must-keep card for this role.

  • Mulliganing is very crucial and a good mulligan versus a bad mulligan can be absolutely soul-crushing.
  • you need to mulligan aggressively to find what you have.
  • When you have bad mulligans consistently, right? When you feel like you're always mulliganing badly, it's going to point to two things. One, it's not luck. One is that you're making bad mulligan decisions or you're making bad decisions with your deck.
  • Stand Together is the instant must keep. Like it's not even a question.

  • Too many games. Too many games.
  • The first hit is free. They warned me about gateway crack in school. I'm not sure if I was paying attention.
  • The problem is is like the marketing the reach of of these LCGs is like very small in the in the fandom.
  • I feel like I'm going to be just literally discarding this on my next turn. I don't care.
  • I was like, I could put it in, maybe get lucky, succeed by two or more, and then get to move. But that makes sense. Okay, has to match. Gotcha. Gotcha. Gotcha.
  • The fire burns him too.
  • I was like, I think I just chill. Yeah, I have lots of options. Lots of options as long as I don't doom out.
  • I'm the worst player of this game. And I just need to accept that at some point. This game is not for me.

  • Ticket to Ride or Catan

Pros
  • Good value for the price ($35 for a starter set).
  • Lots of physical components and evidence for players to interact with.
  • The core D6 dice pool system (DPS) is easy to conceptualize and track.
  • Dice pools are public knowledge, making it easy to keep track of combatants.
  • Dice can be spent at almost any time for actions or reactions.
  • The starter set provides a complete, closed-box experience for a few sessions.
  • Encounter maps are visually appealing and usable for other games.
Cons
  • Not recommended for solo play; better solo horror RPG options exist.
  • Rules are scattered throughout the scenario book, making lookup difficult.
  • The 'learn as you play' format for RPG rules can be cumbersome.
  • Lack of character creation rules in the starter set is a significant drawback.
  • Limited utility of the starter set components for future plays.
  • The game relies heavily on tightly scripted scenarios with few random elements for the GM.
  • Player-focused puzzles are not preferred by the reviewer.
  • GM tools for generating random mysteries or encounters are lacking.
Thematic elements
  • Investigating a mystery behind a lurking dread and a ravenous hunger consuming the city, stopping a force feasting on fear before a true horror is summoned.
  • Arkham, Massachusetts in the 1920s
Comparison games
  • Call of Cthulhu RPG
  • Arkham Horror board game (first edition)
  • Arkham Horror (second edition board game)
  • Mansions of Madness 2nd Edition
  • The Walking Dead starter set
  • Call of Cthulhu RPG (latest starter set)
  • DND Essential Set
  • Forbidden Psalm
Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Action/Reaction System — Players can spend dice to perform simple or complex actions on their turn, as well as reactions to events on other players' or enemies' turns.
  • Character Health/Wounds — Characters have a pool of dice representing their health. Taking wounds limits the number of dice returned to the pool on a new turn.
  • Character Progression (in starter set) — Leveling up occurs twice during the scenario, allowing players to improve skills or gain new abilities.
  • Dice Pool System (DPS) — A dynamic pool system where dice are spent for actions, and dice also represent health. Players roll dice from their pool, with successes needed for actions. Horror dice are added to pools when taking mental trauma, and rolling a '1' on a horror die can lead to trauma.
  • Investigation — Involves examining evidence, solving puzzles (like sliding puzzles), and interacting with NPCs.
  • Mental Trauma — Mental injuries or afflictions can be placed on a character sheet, and using dice for actions may require adding a horror die. Rolling a '1' on a horror die leads to rolling on a trauma table.
  • Player-focused Puzzles — Puzzles are designed for the players to solve, not their characters, which the reviewer finds a negative aspect.

Quotes (from this video)
  • I do not recommend this game for solo play.
  • If you're looking for a solo horror RPG there are simply better options out there.
  • It's a boxed mystery game with player-focused puzzles focusing on an investigation with definitive answers.
  • One of the positives is all of the cool stuff you get in this game for the price.
  • The rules are scattered about through the scenarios through the different acts throughout the different scenes and so it makes it very difficult to find where a rule is if you need to go back and remind yourself.
  • Longtime viewers of the dungeon dive will know that I am not a fan of player focused puzzles when it comes to um RPG.
  • The core mechanism the D6 dice pool system they call it the DPS system and that is the dynamic pool system where your pool of dice are spent to do actions and your dice also represent your health.
  • For me that's a huge bummer I frame almost all of my RPG thoughts around character creation.
  • This Starter Set is completely 100% focused on these pre-generated characters and for me that's a huge bummer.
  • Overall I think the system is pretty cool.
  • I am still very curious and somewhat excited about checking out the full game when it is available.

  • And in this way, we hope that you'll be able to really determine whether or not a game would be right for you, for your family, or your gaming group.
  • So, I had to put Mansions of Madness away, Arkham Horror, all those games.
  • Preferably. Um, you don't like hit points things.
  • So, I don't mind games with strategy, but I don't mind games that leave a lot up to luck either.
  • So, I'm really interested in showing this. It's very different than the other kind of games we've played.
  • So, in What's My Word, each player gets one of these game books, and they use these to record and conceal their game word that the other player is going to be trying to guess.
  • Now, although your secret game word is concealed, you really don't want your opponent to see any of the information that you're writing down.
  • So, in the first round, purple always goes first.
  • Now zero points is not good for a score, but it does give me some useful information.
  • So now when I'm trying to think up new words for future guesses, I can easily see what letters can and cannot be in certain positions.
  • So, you could potentially, if you got all the letters right, earn 6,000 points.
  • But the important thing to remember is you don't have to guess the final word to win.
  • So post what you think I should guess in the YouTube comments.
  • Wow.
  • Thanks for seeing Christie on her first and last episode of Watch It Played.
