Description

Description originally from BoardgameNews

In Agricola, you're a farmer in a wooden shack with your spouse and little else. At first, on a turn, your family gets to take only two actions, one for you and one for your spouse, as might be found among all the possibilities on a farm: plowing fields; collecting materials; building fences, and so on. There are numerous choices available, and while the game progresses you'll have more and more, as each round a new action card is flipped over, offering one more possible action. You might think about having kids in order to get more work accomplished but first you'll need to expand your house to make room--and what are you going to feed all the little rug rats?

The game supports many levels of complexity, mainly through the distribution of cards which represent Minor Improvements and Occupations. In the beginner's version (called the Family Variant in the U.S. release) these cards are not used at all. For advanced play, the U.S. release includes three levels of both types of cards; Basic (E-deck), Interactive (I-deck), and Complex (K-deck), and the rulebook encourages players to experiment with the various decks and mixtures thereof. Aftermarket decks such as the Z-Deck and the L-Deck also exist. Each player starts with a hand of 7 Occupation cards (of more than 160 total) and 7 Minor Improvement cards (of more than 140 total) that he/she may use during the game if they fit into his/her strategy.

Agricola is a turn-based game, and the problem to be overcome is that each available action can be taken by only one player each round so it's important to be careful about your choices. There are countless strategies, some of which depend on your hand of cards. Sometimes it's a good choice to stay on course, and sometimes it is better to react to your opponents' actions...

  • heavy and light does not equal good and bad it's not we found that trap I found that trap the where the g games are only good if they're heavy and I've since come back to where all games are good not all games but you know all weight of games can be good based off of what their circumstances when you're playing them and who you're playing them with
  • the heavier games these are the games that we're talking about today these are the games that have bigger Longer rule sets maybe a little bit harder to learn a little bit harder to teach um they have a lot more going on a little bit more involved and the or the decisions that you make during the game are a little bit more involved you have to really think about think a couple lay layers ahead you can't just think about can't react what's happening to you you have to think a plan ahead in two turns I'll have enough resources just to buy that then I'll be able to do that to be able to do that to be able to do that
  • we're going to count down to our very heaviest
  • all right so the number seven heaviest game on our list is agrica this is weighted at 3.64 this is kind of the great granddaddy of all besides Kus but beyond that agrica uh is would be I would call the great granddaddy of all worker placement games
  • you can't score higher until you pay them a gem like look I'm doing stuff give me more money
  • I know a lot of people compare this because they are very very similar um to um Fe free for Odin but what's the one before that caverna and caverna I think is is very cool but lacks the cards and the cards is what makes agria so special and so much fun but also makes your decision decision level really high
  • I almost wish I had been introduced to this game now cuz when I was introduced to it I was a baby gamer and I was like no thank you no I don't you to feed your people that's a very stressful thing for a new game room yes yes like just that like you get punished you're like I want to have fun why am I being punished
  • this is the first game I I want I don't there probably are other games like this it's just the first one that I've played that's like this where you take actions based on your D color but you can mix and match those to create different colors in order to do different actions on the board
  • the more lucrative actions of course are going to be a mixed color and the more plain actions are going to be the primary colors but it's really interesting in the beginning of the game you don't feel like you have enough die to do anything and at the end of the game you're like I don't I can't even use all of these like I'm done with all of that
  • this is kbon EV and has a weight of 4.3 this is based off of another game that came out called kbon which I really enjoyed but kbon EV is the newer updated version
  • there's also just this supervisor named Sandra who's running around the board and every time she goes to a new section of the board she's basically inspected to see who's not doing their training and then she penalizes you based off of whatever the parameter is
  • it's a funny little comedic element in this very involved game yeah I really really like this one it's it's a fun one

  • The established ones definitely have just such a strong foothold uh that it's it's hard to
  • This sucks.
  • It was an interesting idea, but poor execution.

  • Don't call me a criminal. Don't call me a liar.
  • The reason why most stretch goals work is that they aren't they don't work like they used to
  • If you don't like it, don't back it.
  • Well, maybe you should have been uh on time.
  • Just like, 'Oh, another TMG release. I wonder how late this one's going to be.'
  • It's like the expectation. Well, you're not a month ahead of schedule, so therefore I consider you to be behind schedule, Andy, and I'm very disappointed in you.
  • I I've thought since day one that that is a cool ass looking game.
  • Why change the nice cover of the box?
  • I wish all the artwork was like that cover then I would maybe potentially get it because I really do like Merlin.
  • It's a story that allows you to take money upfront to make the thing that you want to sell people and make a little bit more money.
  • Nearly impossible to win the game.

Quotes (from this video)
  • Through the Ages: A New Story of Civilization is the engine builder to end all engine builders.
  • In Twilight Struggle, one of the more interesting times in history is played out. And I love that each card is a real event that happened.
  • Gaia Project built on Terrammystica and perfected the form. It's the best one.
  • Gloom Haven: Jaws of the Lion has the best tutorial system I have ever seen in a game, and I think it legitimately creates new board gamers constantly because of the way they make it so approachable.
  • Each Spirit in Spirit Island can be played over and over as you learn how to master their abilities, and there are so much content in the box. It also just plays amazing solo.
  • Dune Imperium Uprising took Dune Imperium to a whole new level of scale and scope, and it's got them worms.
  • It's impossible to have a bad time playing Star Wars Rebellion, especially if you love Star Wars. Okay, mostly only if you love Star Wars, but it's really fun. It's Lord of the Rings in a box, and it's perfect.
  • For a solid like 6 years, Terraforming Mars was absolutely the king of the board game hobby. Unreal staying power.
  • Dune Imperium uses art based on the movies, but it doesn't feel at all like a movie tie-in cash grab.
  • The scale and epic stories that come out of Twilight Imperium fourth edition make it everlasting. Every time you play, you get a permanent memory and story. It's truly impressive.
  • The sheer amount of content in Gloom Haven and the card play makes this dungeon crawler a Eurogamer's delight.
  • Ark Nova takes Terraforming Mars' cardplay in Civilization's action card mechanisms and put it into a theme we're just way more interested in. just the absolute pinnacle of mashing up mechanisms into a masterpiece.
  • Pandemic Legacy Season 1 has deserved every single ounce of acclaim and accolades it's received over the years. It was an absolute phenomena when it came out.
  • I don't want to say anything nice about this game. I don't want to say anything nice about this game. I don't like this game though.
  • Fine. Fine.
  • Brass Birmingham is objectively a board game. Done. Easy. That was nice. Words that are written.
  • Brass rhymes with ass. Got him. You're done.
  • Brass Birmingham has one of the best examples of positive player interaction and a game I'd actually seek out to play for a player. Was that so hard?
  • So, that was one nice thing about every single game in the Board Game Geek top 100. Many games that we actually don't even really like, but there's always something nice to say. Exactly.
  • Just engage.
  • We had a lot of fun making it.

  • I love sci-fi. That is that is a good theme for me.
  • it has um like seven modules whereas like SETI only has five, which is only a difference of two, but it's that that's so much more replay-ability because all the permutations of five different options versus seven different options. Like seven gives you so many more. So I just feel like base has a lot more replayability.
  • I also recommend Hot Streak which came out. that's a fun light light betting game. if you like Camel Up, it's like the next step. And uh to me it's way more fun than Camel Up.
  • and the gang, the gang is like a classic uh like new new party game classic. Um, we'll we can pull it out and have fun like at any time.
  • it was a Gricola because um, besides the farming theme and also teaching me worker placement, it was probably the first worker placement game I played.
  • there's just so much replay-ability in that box. Um, that you'll never see the same game twice or even close to the same game twice.
  • Agricola has so much tension.
  • Agria is just like such such a game that was like ahead of its time. It's still better than like 99.9% of the games that come out these days.
  • if you're interested in like dungeon crawlers, uh, Gloom Haven is my favorite.
  • treat it as an experience and not a game kind of situation.
  • what Vantage taught me is like uh doesn't like the game in in that sort of game, it doesn't have to be like balanced to be fun, you know? It doesn't have to be like um super scripted or super strategic. If the story is interesting, then people who love stories will still love the game.
  • board games is such a great place to like reconnect with friends and family and people you care about. So, um, keep gaming, keep buying games and I'll keep making them. And thank you all so much for the support.

  • The rule books for those games which were co-written by Vlarger and Jason. Uh those are really really good rule books. very very well written, absolutely perfect in terms of teaching you the game. Zero questions afterwards.
  • Well, Mage Knight, but only just Mage Knight is my number one favorite game of all time.
  • Elder Scrolls is very likely in my top 10 or top 20, but yeah. Um, it depends how much time I've got. If I had 12, 14 hours free, I'd play Elder Scrolls. If I had four or five hours free, I'd play Mage Knight.
  • Okay. Well, let's say Voidfall because the last two times that I've played Voidfall, I have specifically said I don't want to play this with people who haven't played before.

  • This is another tile lane game. You know how much I love them. It's another entwined drafting game. You know how much I love that.
  • I know it's not the prettiest game, but it does have kind of a nice retro50s sci-fi kit vibe to it.
  • The entwined drafting escalates in tension.
  • The landscape or the moonscape cards you have to play they have to be played in ascending order. So you can't just put stuff wherever you want. So you are creating a vice that you will find yourself stuck in as the game goes on.
  • Wow, really surprised me. I mean, I love Sim City style games and all that.
  • I love the uh team up here, Steve Finn and Phil Walker Harding. I want to see that combo a lot more.
  • It's got a very very tight draft, which honestly I think is best at two players.
  • The presentation is very good except for the fact that it's not colorblind friendly.
  • Theme is such an important integral element to Euros. And it always breaks my heart when publishers ignore that.
  • And that one extra bit attention to detail that so many games ignore in the pursuit of language independence really elevates the game, makes my city that I'm building feel like it has character, like it has a story, like it has a unique identity.
  • For me, it's an Azul Killer or most of the other ones in this.

  • Movie Tricks is really good. Movie Tricks is from Chitty Fox Games. It's a trick taker, but it's got a bit of a kick and I really like that.
  • Severton is a game from Vlades Shaattle. You may have heard of Vlad Shaattle, but he's got a new game this year called Severton. It's the first time he's had a new game published for about 10 years. And a little bit like Dutch Resistance: Orange Shall Overcome, it's a cooperative game where you're trying to complete missions. And it's really, really good. And not many people are talking about it.
  • The new version for me is an improved version of the game. So, if you like Ingenious or Genal, whatever you want to call it, then have a look at the 3D version. That was really good.
  • we played this game called drop alter and I absolutely blitzed it. I mean I think I won I think I won six of five of the six rounds that we played or something like that.

  • Project L is another really really good game and I really like Project L and uh and that is a completely abstract game.

  • as much as A Trespass Odyssey was the most complicated game that I've ever played and some of the rules were extremely confusing and we weren't sure of some of the rules after 25 games, that game had things in it which I have never had that experience from any other game ever.
  • And I've heard that Kingdoms for Lawn offers a similar experience.
  • But when I'm playing it solo, if I'm not live streaming it, my brain because of the weird memory issues that I have, literally gets to a point and I go up and it just stops and my short-term memory disappears and I'm like, I have no idea not only what I was doing, but where we are, what phase we're on, or anything like that.

  • The reason I highlighted Planet Unknown is that this is a game that is purely about building a planet.
  • But I love the idea that instead of having a universe of planets that you can go and discover, instead you have one specific planet with a unique hook, a unique layout, beautiful art.
  • So, in Hot Streak, it is a racing game for mascots.

  • Trading in the Mediterranean. Concordia is the game that I think has really broken through in this genre.
  • They typically don't enjoy trading in the Mediterranean, but they really really enjoy Concordia.
  • But if you're not into the Viking theme of I I guess exploring and pillaging, if you're not really into that, I think a game that stands out that's mentioned here is the game A Feast for Odin.
  • But I think this game is just a really really good Eurothemed game that give players a lot of choices.
  • So, Creature Caravan doesn't even really present itself as a zombie themed game, but it is.
  • But I love that Ryan Locket put his own spin on zombie themed games by just having them be these lumbering creatures that that just follow you around.
  • I say that because our game origin story, we have a different take on the the superhero theme in our collection now.

  • High replayability and depth with multiple paths to victory
  • Influential design that tightened action economy in modern games

  • Beginners can struggle with balance and pacing
Thematic elements

  • Medieval farmstead / pastoral rural life
  • Procedural/resource-management simulation with evolving decisions
Comparison games
  • Village (Agricola: Village)
  • Kver
Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Animal husbandry and paddocks — Draft animals into paddocks with limits (two per square; barns raise limits), and use animals to generate resources and points; animals breed when space allows.
  • card management — Manage a hand of occupation and improvement cards that provide boosts, powers, and scoring opportunities, guiding early-game direction.
  • Compound Scoring — accumulate points from multiple sources across 14 rounds; strategic optimization across actions determines winner.
  • End-game scoring — accumulate points from multiple sources across 14 rounds; strategic optimization across actions determines winner.
  • Farming and resource production — Plow fields, plant crops (grain, vegetables), harvest resources, and convert them into food and scoring opportunities.
  • Food and hunger management — Feed your family each round via baking, cooking, or using gathered food; failure to feed can be punished and adds tension for new players.
  • Housing and growth — Expand and upgrade your house (wood -> clay -> stone), and use births to gain new workers, integrating housing with population growth.
  • Resource Management — Plow fields, plant crops (grain, vegetables), harvest resources, and convert them into food and scoring opportunities.

  • Aricular is one of the most important and influential modern board games for a reason.
  • The best thing about this game is how unused spaces keep gathering resources.
  • Going hungry in the game is quite easy to do for new players, and you'll get punished really hard for it.
  • Agricola's nickname is misery farm, and it's called that for a good reason.

  • There are tons and tons of buildings, but they fit a few major functions.
  • The adventure system is fun and brings a ton of additional resources into your cave.

  • The first time in the earliest that it dawned on me that I could do something strategic in a board game.
  • I enjoyed the simplistic roll and move mechanism.
  • This was my first cooperative experience in board gaming, I think, and in fact was one of the first games I purchased for our own collection.
  • Ark Nova was the next game that really stood out to me ... everything made total sense of how to play this game just from watching that video.
  • I discovered Wingspan as well, which felt very similar with like the card play, the theme of it as well is just really nice.

  • Labyrinth is one of the most popular games in the world.
  • The advanced game in here, the upgraded version game, it's terrible. I really dislike it.
  • At the end of the day, even when you add in a bunch of stuff in here, you're playing the same game of Labyrinth over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.
  • The stuff they release is really slow.
  • Labyrinth doesn't strike me as the game you want to play multiple times.
  • I can't really recommend that you buy it because the price point here doesn't meet the fun.

  • Creativity rarely works that way.
  • So, SCAMPER is essentially a checklist, seven letters each representing a different approach that you could take to modify an existing product.
  • Most ideas will be bad, but occasionally, a prompt forces you into a design space you would never have explored otherwise.
  • SCAMPER will create weird and wacky games, innovative new takes on a tried and tested formula. And that's great, but commercially, without an understanding of your potential audience, it's a shot in the dark.
  • Your player persona is there to help you with your own focus. It acts as a lens through which you can view your developing game, a different set of eyes to your own.

Quotes (from this video)
  • It's a tough It's a lot of work. It's a lot of work, a lot of uh time, you know, a lot of upfront costs uh and things like that.
  • Because in my mind, crowdfunding was, hey, I'm a I'm a person and I had this dream and I want to get my game out. Not, hey, we're a successful company, but we're going to do this thing because, you know, uh we want to use your money to buy to to get our stuff and then we'll do it and you test the the waters for us.
  • They'd look at me like, 'Get another job. Get another job. You're you're in the wrong business, man. This sounds like a sucky business, right?'
  • I think the fact that you can market that way and you have a platform, it makes it easier.
  • the only marketing that there's two that I well three con that I would stand by conventions of course, I would go to retailers uh and do demos like you know just drive around hit a bunch of retailers do demo nights and things like that and and teach the game there and then three would be free copies to retailers to put in their library and push the game.
  • I just feel it really should be for the the dreamer that wants wants their game out there kind of thing.
  • the paid preview stuff just doesn't do that well.
  • I think we're all just kind of collectively numb to a lot of that.
  • I believe everyone I mean they have an audience. So, you know, even if they had a hundred people in their audience, but if you know me sending out review copy and I can get, you know, two three people buy it because of that, I feel like I've made you know I've made my my money back psychologically.
  • There's a novelty to that tactile experience of and and being around the table with other people.
  • I almost wonder actually is are board games going to continue to get more and more popular the further we go into AI tech, everyone being jacked into the matrix and that will be like this this um this haven for people to actually still have real human experiences with each other next to each other.
  • Dogs of War will be the the next uh big hit uh of that line.
  • It is great and it's an alien. It's a game about aliens, but also different take. They're not looking to conquer or anything. They're seeking knowledge.

  • Once we introduce this degree of randomness into a game, then all strategic decisions and tactical decisions cease to matter.

  • DOES THIS GAME KNOW HOW TO PARTY??
  • I have rarely played a board game that is as exciting as Agricola, in sort of that stomach-churning, knot-twisting-in-your-gut kind of sense...
  • It's thrilling, and for those of you who like what I call 'funstration' - frustrating fun - Agricola is (kiss noise) Mwaa! Perfecto.

  • And considering it's one of my favorite genres of all time, and we just did a review of Kinfire, which caused me to noodle on this top 10 list again.
  • But nonetheless, no matter how you slice it, Dune Imperium does a really great job of mixing worker placement with some light elements of deck building, effortlessly weaving together this economic backbone that works so well for the world of Frank Herbert.
  • This is some of the most fun worker placement that I've done with my family, with my friends.
  • Viticulture Essential Edition which I think is just one of the best purest worker placement games that you can get.
  • It just feels refined and smart and elegant and propulsive and nuanced.
  • But I still think Viticulture Essential Edition as is, is just one of the tightest, most easily recommendable midweight Euro purchases you can give to anyone.
  • It's just man everything I love about board games.
  • But the lantern action when you draft one of the lower value dice, which yes, they are less powerful dice, but still functional.
  • it's just a beautifully presented, tight, small box Euro that gives you so much to do in such a really pleasing package that just makes you frustrated when you play that you can't get more out of any of your turns.
  • Let me know in the comments below what are your favorite worker placement games.

  • It’s Ryan from Nights Around a Table, and this is Agricola, a worker placement subsistence farming simulation board game, for 1-4 players, or 1-5 players, depending on the version we're talking about.
  • You and your friends play farmers in the 1600s who are struggling to build their little farms and keep their families fed year after year.
  • But the spaces in town are limited and exclusive, and you’ll have to duke it out with your fellow farmers to get all the stuff you need.
  • Every year, harvest time seems to come sooner and sooner, and you’ll always have a number of hungry mouths to feed.
  • If you’re short on food, you’ll have to go begging for it and lose points.
  • At the end of the game, you’ll earn points for how large and varied your farm is, and you’ll LOSE points for how large and varied it isn’t.
  • Whoever has the most points after the final harvest wins!
