Description

Description from the publisher:

Horrific monsters and spectral presences lurk in manors, crypts, schools, monasteries, and derelict buildings near Arkham, Massachusetts. Some spin dark conspiracies while others wait for hapless victims to devour or drive insane. It’s up to a handful of brave investigators to explore these cursed places and uncover the truth about the living nightmares within.

Designed by Corey Konieczka, Mansions of Madness is a macabre game of horror, insanity, and mystery for two to five players. Each game takes place within a pre-designed story that provides players with a unique map and several combinations of plot threads. These threads affect the monsters that investigators may encounter, the clues they need to find, and which climactic story ending they will ultimately experience. One player takes on the role of the keeper, controlling the monsters and other malicious powers within the story. The other players take on the roles of investigators, searching for answers while struggling to survive with their minds intact.

Do you dare enter the Mansions of Madness?

Quotes (from this video)
  • Through the Ages: A New Story of Civilization is the engine builder to end all engine builders.
  • In Twilight Struggle, one of the more interesting times in history is played out. And I love that each card is a real event that happened.
  • Gaia Project built on Terrammystica and perfected the form. It's the best one.
  • Gloom Haven: Jaws of the Lion has the best tutorial system I have ever seen in a game, and I think it legitimately creates new board gamers constantly because of the way they make it so approachable.
  • Each Spirit in Spirit Island can be played over and over as you learn how to master their abilities, and there are so much content in the box. It also just plays amazing solo.
  • Dune Imperium Uprising took Dune Imperium to a whole new level of scale and scope, and it's got them worms.
  • It's impossible to have a bad time playing Star Wars Rebellion, especially if you love Star Wars. Okay, mostly only if you love Star Wars, but it's really fun. It's Lord of the Rings in a box, and it's perfect.
  • For a solid like 6 years, Terraforming Mars was absolutely the king of the board game hobby. Unreal staying power.
  • Dune Imperium uses art based on the movies, but it doesn't feel at all like a movie tie-in cash grab.
  • The scale and epic stories that come out of Twilight Imperium fourth edition make it everlasting. Every time you play, you get a permanent memory and story. It's truly impressive.
  • The sheer amount of content in Gloom Haven and the card play makes this dungeon crawler a Eurogamer's delight.
  • Ark Nova takes Terraforming Mars' cardplay in Civilization's action card mechanisms and put it into a theme we're just way more interested in. just the absolute pinnacle of mashing up mechanisms into a masterpiece.
  • Pandemic Legacy Season 1 has deserved every single ounce of acclaim and accolades it's received over the years. It was an absolute phenomena when it came out.
  • I don't want to say anything nice about this game. I don't want to say anything nice about this game. I don't like this game though.
  • Fine. Fine.
  • Brass Birmingham is objectively a board game. Done. Easy. That was nice. Words that are written.
  • Brass rhymes with ass. Got him. You're done.
  • Brass Birmingham has one of the best examples of positive player interaction and a game I'd actually seek out to play for a player. Was that so hard?
  • So, that was one nice thing about every single game in the Board Game Geek top 100. Many games that we actually don't even really like, but there's always something nice to say. Exactly.
  • Just engage.
  • We had a lot of fun making it.

Quotes (from this video)
  • I did not enjoy my first play of Echoes of Time.
  • this is a light tableau building card game.
  • Flow... it looks gorgeous.
  • Covenant. Number two on my most anticipated list.
  • Vlaada Chvátil. Do you know what the last game that Vlaada designed was? ... He's not actually designed a new game and had a new game published for almost 10 years.
  • It's called Severton.
  • I have spent the last 15 years of my life telling everybody that Talisman is such a bad game... And with the fifth edition, I've had to sort of eat my words on that.
  • There just isn't enough time to play all of the games.
  • IR from Osprey Games. Children of the Sun. Yeah. It is really good.
  • Druids of Adora, new Stefan Feld game from Alea
  • There may be some Essen live streams while we're there.
  • I have written to the publisher to ask for a potential review copy, yeah, but to be fair, I only emailed them yesterday.
  • Covenant. I completely forgot that was a thing. Started looking at the pictures and and thinking, yeah, I'm down for that.
  • The The Void Voynich Puzzle. Voynich Yeah. Don't forget go to bed reading the Wikipedia articles about the Voynich manuscript.
  • Saboteur is the other one which I did know. I saw it on your shelf uh today earlier, but I didn't know much about it. But now you've explained what it is, I'm kind of getting that um like Enid Blyton vibe from it. Yeah. what was it called? The Famous Five. Famous Five. Famous Five. Of that kind of stuff. Yeah. And weirdly, I'm interested. All right. And I've looked at the pictures of that, so yeah. Yeah. Yeah, Saboteur is good.
  • I'll be demoing, but I'm demoing um uh Revenant um I think twice on the Saturday from 12:00 till 4:00.
  • Trickerion with the Arcane Arts expansion. I think that's my schedule.
  • Now, the one game that I am going to be looking at is there's a new game that Mighty Boards have just announced recently called Gods. All right. Which is designed by David Thompson, Trevor Benjamin, and is right up my alley.
  • And they said, "Well, at least come round and have a look at it." And I'm like, "Yeah, I'll come round and have a look at it." But I've already agreed that I'm going to be doing content on that.
  • I find it really weird and unusual that and and everybody else does this. I'm the odd one, but all of all of these content creators go to Essen, they go to Gen Con, and they have meetings with publishers where they sit down and they make deals about payment and what videos they're going to Right. That's the worst place to have a meeting.

Cons

Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • app integration — Because of how the app handles the surprise and keeps track of things and it helps with the combat. It really does feel I've had multiple people like how does how does it know? How does the app know?
  • randomization — Because the app does randomize some things. Maybe not enough, but it randomizes some things.
  • scenario variety — All the different stories that the app has are great. Or not I mean I shouldn't say all of them are great, but it's great that there are so many of them to choose from.

  • It's one of those games that's greater than the sum of its parts.
  • The way you explore the dungeon is so unique.
  • It's focused on strong female characters, which most games aren't.
  • The only huge downside right now is it's nearly impossible to get in the United States because of uh trade wars and shipping is insane...
  • Make sure whatever you're doing, make sure you're having fun.
  • We are so blessed with variety.

Quotes (from this video)
  • The reason I highlighted Planet Unknown is that this is a game that is purely about building a planet.
  • But I love the idea that instead of having a universe of planets that you can go and discover, instead you have one specific planet with a unique hook, a unique layout, beautiful art.
  • So, in Hot Streak, it is a racing game for mascots.
  • Delightful game. I think the the theatic and the uh mechanical twist make this game really stand out.
  • Trading in the Mediterranean. Concordia is the game that I think has really broken through in this genre.
  • They typically don't enjoy trading in the Mediterranean, but they really really enjoy Concordia.
  • But if you're not into the Viking theme of I I guess exploring and pillaging, if you're not really into that, I think a game that stands out that's mentioned here is the game A Feast for Odin.
  • But I think this game is just a really really good Eurothemed game that give players a lot of choices.
  • So, Creature Caravan doesn't even really present itself as a zombie themed game, but it is.
  • But I love that Ryan Locket put his own spin on zombie themed games by just having them be these lumbering creatures that that just follow you around.
  • I say that because our game origin story, we have a different take on the the superhero theme in our collection now.

Quotes (from this video)
  • So, let's see if we can come up with the definition together. Then we'll walk back through all sorts of iterations of dungeon crawling to see how the heck we got here.
  • The genre is getting stretched in all these new creative ways to become more of a vibe.
  • And again, if you think it's really boiled down to something simple like kill monsters, grab the loot, and level up. Well, doesn't that also describe the backsabbing party game Munchkin?
  • And pretty much every single dungeon crawler we've played here is not actually a dungeon crawler by some sense of the definition.
  • Fly, you fools.
  • Rather, it's better to make combat mechanics around, say, constantly responding enemies that goofully stand around and exist to die for the adventurer's profit.
  • So actually the right terminology for a lot of dungeon crawling would be dungeon exterminating.
  • So, since we established that dungeon crawling is now dungeon exterminating with a level of vibes that you feel once your character is equipping items, fighting, and looting, let's go into some other examples of dungeon crawler feel that I felt over the years.
  • And finally, number four, dungeon crawler vibe check. There's actually now zero nada puzzle solving, at least from the strict sense of performing a dedicated puzzle within the dungeon.
  • cooperative board gaming just didn't really exist back then.
  • These are the moments that cause the high fives and make you remember game night.
  • But since it was made with a skirmish mode in mind, its turn order doesn't feel like a dungeon crawler at all.
  • This might be the most dungeon crawlery in the truest sense.
  • Wow, this is actually a pretty good comparison.
  • It's kind of like Munchkin and being dungeon crawler inspired, but now you have the threat of dying and with more mechanics.
  • We've always felt like Gloom Haven fit perfectly into what gamers wanted out of Dn D to just be a murder hobo and to kill everything in their path.
  • It wasn't so much about looting or exploration, even though it technically had those things. Rather, it was about being euro puzzly.
  • And ironically, none of them have that typical high fantasy swords and armor and elves and magic theme.
  • Yeah, I was actually chocked by this.
  • It really feels like we've gone from the video game inspiration to board game form which came with a lot of limitations as dungeon crawling in a board game is inherently timeconuming and also very component consuming.
  • For me, I started this video with the goal of, okay, we're going to nail exactly what a dungeon crawler is. But yeah, still it's just it's just like vibes, right?
  • My final thoughts. So, what do I think is going on with this genre? Well, I think it's been massively overtaken by video game influence onto your board game night.
  • And that makes my life as a reviewer more complicated, but also a lot more fun.
  • It actually sounds a lot like what Hero Quest scenarios are trying to do at the end.
  • So, what do I play now? Like what what?
  • And then I can participate in some sort of conflict like probably combat. And then I can move and interact with some sort of map thing like rooms. I don't care about the puzzle element, and it doesn't always have to be a campaign.

  • We're told that this latest figure is a priest of Dagon who is actually William Vanderbilt buil himself.

  • I think she's obsessed
  • Harvey's going to suffer Two Face Down damage but an agility test will negate it.
  • Wow we are doing so good this is this is very good because now William will not suffer any additional damage if anything he should give damage to the monsters.
  • The cultist swings a staff wildly about with great fervor and little skill Harvey's going to suffer Two Face Down damage but an agility test will negate it.

  • The investigators escaped the mansion.
  • The cult will surely be destroyed.
Cons
  • Min is in danger from spreading fire.
  • Harvey is eliminated due to damage.
  • Min takes face down damage from fire.
Thematic elements
Comparison games

Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Agility Test — Harvey has to test his agility, which is only two, and needs two successes to succeed.
  • Attack action — Harvey attacks Vanderbilt again, using his 2x4 (treated as a cane). He tests his strength, which is three, and needs two successes.
  • damage calculation — Harvey's weapon connects with his attacker's chest, dealing damage equal to the test result. Three more damage is needed to defeat Vanderbilt.
  • damage mitigation — William suffers three damage, but a strength plus one roll (rolling five dice) will negate it. He has an Elder Ward, allowing him to roll one extra die. They spend a token to convert one die to a success, so William suffers no damage.
  • Damage Negation — Harvey suffers two face down damage, but agility negates one. He takes one damage, which is his fifth. All face down damages are removed, and he gains a wounded condition, limiting his move action and eliminating him due to reaching his health limit.
  • Escape Condition — The investigation is complete if an investigator escapes the mansion with a ritual component unique item. Min has the item and escapes.
  • Horror Check — Each investigator must resolve a horror check against a monster within range with the highest horror rating. William rolls against the hunting horror, testing his observation of four, needing two successes. Harvey performs a horror check against the cultist, suffering two face down horror unless observation plus one negates it. Harvey has an observation of four, rolling five dice.
  • Monster Attack — The hunting horror attacks William, attempting to drag him away. William tests his agility of three and needs two successes. If successful, William holds his ground and bats the beast away.
  • monster movement — The Deep One moves two spaces towards the nearest investigator, William, and attacks the investigator in its space with the lowest strength.
  • Movement through Fire — When an investigator enters a space with fire, they take one face down damage. Min runs towards the door, entering a space with fire.
  • Mythos Event — A Mythos event affects the investigator with a light source and the lowest observation. Fire spreads from the investigator's light source to her hand and then around her and adjacent spaces.
  • Strength Test — William rolls four dice for his strength to push a monster, needing three successes. The target number is the monster's 'Brawn', which is a value of three.

  • Investigation — Min finds what looks like a personal planner picking it up a brass key clatters from between the pages. The person using it once per round can convert an investigation symbol into a success Elder Sign.
  • push action — To help get Harvey into the library.
  • Search Action — Harvey would be able to move and still perform a search action on his next turn. Harvey will perform a search action.
  • Trade action — This allows him and any players in his space to pick up and exchange items.
