Description

In the trick-taking card game The Crew: Mission Deep Sea, you and the other players work together to search for the lost continent of Mu. This new adventure takes your crew deep down into the abyss on a search for the fabled sunken land. How far you get depends entirely on how well you work together as a team. Card by card, trick by trick, your search party will discover the challenges that lie ahead and forge a path to Mu.

This new version of The Crew has the same innovative co-operative trick-taking mechanism as the highly lauded original game — but with some exciting new surprises! While communication between your crew members is severely limited by your submerged state, it is also critical to your success; finding the hidden land in the murky depths depends not only on winning tricks, but also on carefully negotiating the order in which they are won. If things don't go as planned, you might just be able to salvage the operation, but it will take near flawless execution and perhaps a little luck to finally reach Mu.

Quotes (from this video)
  • The Crew clearly offered the most for repeated game nights. Between the mission variety and how different groups approach the same problems, we just kept pulling it out.
  • If you only buy one small cooperative card game and you want it to last, buy the Crew.
  • The mind is the stripped down two to four player game where you just have cards one to 100 and as a team you try to play them in ascending order without talking or showing your hands.
  • The mind is the purest social interaction in a weird way.
  • Take Time's depth was more about shared pre-planning, deciding which segments we wanted to sacrifice with low or high totals.

video_pk 62539 · mention_pk 155252
Board Game Critique - The Crew: Mission Deep Sea video thumbnail
Click to watch at 1:02 · YouTube ↗
Overall sentiment (raw)
positive
Pros
  • Highly accessible and easy to teach across a broad range of player counts
  • Very high replayability due to modular mission decks and varying constraints
  • Strong social tension and shared problem-solving moments that feel rewarding rather than punitive
  • Excellent value for money on a per-session basis; quick play length supports frequent replays
Cons
  • Limited depth for players seeking dense euro-style optimization or heavy system mastery
  • The novelty of missions can wane if players see a constrained deck with repeated constraints without fresh constraints
Thematic elements
  • team coordination under constrained information to accomplish mission-specific goals; collaborative problem solving under strict turn-by-turn rules; tension arises from balancing timing, risk, and resource allocation within each hand and across missions.
  • Cooperative trick-taking missions framed within the The Crew franchise; Mission Deep Sea introduces a distinct mission-centric flow that plays with color-coded objectives, draftable constraints, and short, high-pressure decision loops. The setting sits at a high level of abstraction—spaceflight vocabulary and mission-oriented language are used to justify the crew-based teamwork and the occasional tactical constraint—while the actual theme remains primarily mechanical: coordinating a team to hit precise targets under limited communication.
  • mission-driven, lightweight storytelling with explicit objective cards; the vibe emphasizes shared problem solving, quick feedback loops, and a heist-like collective planning moment when the team aligns on a difficult play.
Comparison games
  • Reicide
  • Eternal Decks
Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • cooperative constraint satisfaction — The cohesion of the group’s approach matters; players must synchronize their plays to meet the mission constraints, trading off straightforward card power for situational synergy with teammates.
  • Limited Communication — The game restricts table talk; players receive a single communication token per hand, which can be spent to reveal a chosen status about a card (highest, lowest, or only of that color), enabling targeted coordination without broad disclosure.
  • Mission-based objectives — Each hand is colored by a specific objective (win this many tricks, or avoid winning a certain trick, etc.). These constraints push players to adapt their usual trick-taking instincts to meet a precise end state, creating tension and cooperative problem solving.
  • progressive feedback and retry loop — Failure to meet a mission yields quick, light penalties and a fast reset; players learn from misreads and miscommunications and try a refined approach on the next attempt, sustaining momentum and laughter even in setback moments.
  • Trick-Taking — A traditional trick-taking loop: a lead card is played, others follow suit if able, and the highest card of the lead suit wins the trick unless trumped by a submarine or a special power; each hand includes a mission card that alters the win/lose conditions in meaningful ways.

Quotes (from this video)
  • The Crew is the king. It's the most social of the three.
  • If you're listening and thinking, I just want one great co-op card game for my group, The Crew is the answer.
  • The Crew Mission Deep Sea. It works at basically every player count. It's easy to teach. It's cheap.
  • Tom Vassel gave it a 10 out of 10 for a reason.
  • Eternal Decks is hard to learn and then hard again to master.
  • Reicide has a similar elegance.
  • There's a real chance Eternal Decks ends up as one of the standout games of 2025 for heavy cooperative puzzles.
  • It's the most flexible of the three by a mile.

Mechanics (from transcript analysis)

  • Deck reshuffle and re-setup between missions — After each mission, the deck is reshuffled and a new task is drawn; the setup is quick, enabling rapid transitions between missions.
  • Difficulty scaling with player count — Rule book provides guidance and tweaks to adjust the challenge when playing with 2–5 players, affecting mission difficulty and strategy.
  • Mission-driven objectives — Each round has a mission card that links to a target card; players must win a trick that includes that specific card to succeed.
  • Trick-taking with multiple suits — A deck is dealt to all players; tricks are won by the highest value card; rocket cards always win unless a higher rocket is played; rockets can only be started or played when you have no matching color.
