Description

Pandemic Legacy is a co-operative campaign game, with an overarching story arc played through 12-24 sessions, depending on how well your group does at the game. At the beginning, the game starts in a very similar fashion as basic Pandemic, in which your team of disease-fighting specialists races against the clock to travel around the world, treating disease hot spots while researching cures for each of four plagues before they get out of hand.

During a player's turn, they have four actions available, with which they may travel around in the world in various ways (sometimes needing to discard a card), build structures like research stations, treat diseases (removing one cube from the board; if all cubes of a color have been removed, the disease has been eradicated), trade cards with other players, or find a cure for a disease (requiring five cards of the same color to be discarded while at a research station). Each player has a unique role with special abilities to help them at these actions.

After a player has taken their actions, they draw two cards. These cards can include epidemic cards, which will place new disease cubes on the board, and can lead to an outbreak, spreading disease cubes even further. Outbreaks additionally increase the panic level of a city, making that city more expensive to travel to.

Each month in the game, you have two chances to achieve that month's objectives. If you succeed, you win and immediately move on to the next month. If you fail, you have a second chance, with more funding for beneficial event cards.

During the campaign, new rules and components will be introduced. These will sometimes require you to permanently alter the components of the game; this includes writing on cards, ripping up cards, and placing permanent stickers on components. Your characters can gain new skills, or detrimental effects. A character can even be lost entirely, at which point it's no longer available for play.

  • For me, this is an S. This is one of the better games ever. I love it.
  • Um Tor Mars I've spoken about this many times. Hate love it. H I love to hate it and I hate to love it.
  • It's just like F plus for me. This is boring.
  • If this wasn't Marvel, if it was just called Champions, wouldn't be the same same wouldn't be a top 100.
  • We like lordas but like boa and kban ee is my favorite ones.
  • And then we're going to have Mara Kybo. Oh, Marbo is good. Uh I really like it still. Even though that Pirates of Marbo kind of did the same goodness in shorter amount of time.
  • I would place Marbo in B or C.
  • What? D.
  • And uh lastly for this part of the video, we're going to have come down EV S S. Yeah, that's an easy one to end on. We like lordas but like boa and kban ee is my favorite ones.
  • That was way more fun than I thought it would be.
  • I think this is fun because well we kind of have this thing in top 10 or especially in top uh when we make top 100 and top 50 because she's like oh you picked this so low or this is so high and we get like to kind of see our differences a little more clearly.
  • Also when we do the keep and we disagree we kind of I think that is fun and I thought that we we're going to agree more. So, but but it's nice that we don't.

Quotes (from this video)
  • Ticket to Ride Legacy, it's not designed to be played hundreds of times.
  • I personally find the more thematic the game the lower the replayability and the more abstract the game the higher the replayability.
  • I've recently played White Castle 50 times this year.
  • The White Castle remains one of my all-time bangers.
  • Not many. I would say Castle Burgundy I've played over 100 times.
  • This is a dice placement kind of set collection game. It's quick, it's fast, the artwork is just top tier.
  • Shakespeare. Oh, Shakespeare. What a fantastic game.
  • Arboritum. One of my favorite card games that exists. It's been remade. The second edition is equally beautiful.
  • Nippon, big economic game, but truly a beautiful system.
  • Viticulture Essential Edition came out in 2015. Viticulture was my favorite game of all time for a very long time. I love Viticulture.
  • Seven Wonders Duel came out in 2015.
  • a wild card because that's a little game called Daxu.
  • Blood Rage, Code Names, Pandemic Legacy Season 1.
  • This is a sequel to Just Lewis and Clark, I think it was called.
  • Is it playing Carcasson in Carcasson? You know, going to Gen Con?

Quotes (from this video)
  • Through the Ages: A New Story of Civilization is the engine builder to end all engine builders.
  • In Twilight Struggle, one of the more interesting times in history is played out. And I love that each card is a real event that happened.
  • Gaia Project built on Terrammystica and perfected the form. It's the best one.
  • Gloom Haven: Jaws of the Lion has the best tutorial system I have ever seen in a game, and I think it legitimately creates new board gamers constantly because of the way they make it so approachable.
  • Each Spirit in Spirit Island can be played over and over as you learn how to master their abilities, and there are so much content in the box. It also just plays amazing solo.
  • Dune Imperium Uprising took Dune Imperium to a whole new level of scale and scope, and it's got them worms.
  • It's impossible to have a bad time playing Star Wars Rebellion, especially if you love Star Wars. Okay, mostly only if you love Star Wars, but it's really fun. It's Lord of the Rings in a box, and it's perfect.
  • For a solid like 6 years, Terraforming Mars was absolutely the king of the board game hobby. Unreal staying power.
  • Dune Imperium uses art based on the movies, but it doesn't feel at all like a movie tie-in cash grab.
  • The scale and epic stories that come out of Twilight Imperium fourth edition make it everlasting. Every time you play, you get a permanent memory and story. It's truly impressive.
  • The sheer amount of content in Gloom Haven and the card play makes this dungeon crawler a Eurogamer's delight.
  • Ark Nova takes Terraforming Mars' cardplay in Civilization's action card mechanisms and put it into a theme we're just way more interested in. just the absolute pinnacle of mashing up mechanisms into a masterpiece.
  • Pandemic Legacy Season 1 has deserved every single ounce of acclaim and accolades it's received over the years. It was an absolute phenomena when it came out.
  • I don't want to say anything nice about this game. I don't want to say anything nice about this game. I don't like this game though.
  • Fine. Fine.
  • Brass Birmingham is objectively a board game. Done. Easy. That was nice. Words that are written.
  • Brass rhymes with ass. Got him. You're done.
  • Brass Birmingham has one of the best examples of positive player interaction and a game I'd actually seek out to play for a player. Was that so hard?
  • So, that was one nice thing about every single game in the Board Game Geek top 100. Many games that we actually don't even really like, but there's always something nice to say. Exactly.
  • Just engage.
  • We had a lot of fun making it.

Quotes (from this video)
  • No matter what you do, how much you plan, everything you put exactly right, the one thing I can guarantee you in both life and board games is that eventually something will go wrong.
  • Board games give us a small abstraction, a little picture into the greater questions of life.
  • Board games teach us all of that. They teach us how to manage risks, deal with problems as they arrive, and handle some of the more complex but guaranteed situations in life.
  • Board games give us a chance to experiment.
  • The practice of actively engaging in challenge, of directing your mind in a way so that you problem solve, you think of alternative routes, you embrace the little mild bit of stress and chaos that board games throw at us.
  • In the cooperative game market, I can think of a lot of games, but some of the first ones that come to mind are games like Pandemic or the Forbidden Game series.
  • Forbidden games have each of you play your role, much like life, and then they allow each of you to tackle that role and rely on the other people to do so in order to mitigate the chaos that is sure to come and is going to continue descending until one of you either wins or loses.
  • Pandemic is another escalating failure system.
  • Games help with stress and frustration with a surprise loss that comes at the hands of a boss that just showed up to the table.
  • In cooperative games, it's pretty obvious to see where stress management might exist. And in solo games, you give yourself the opportunity to deal with challenges that you sometimes face when you're on your own because those happen as well, whether they're internal personal struggles or external ones like the road trip with my son without anyone else here to help.
  • Board games give us a tiny little micro version of that. and risks will show up at your door. Challenges will approach.
  • The more experiences you have making tough decisions when tough decisions are needed. to sacrifice one player in order to save the team, to push a little bit farther to get the resources you need, to extend the journey, to press your luck and hopefully score a little bit more.
  • Board games are a fantastic way to do that, but they're not enough on their own. You could learn a board game inside and out and still know nothing about life. And you could live your life inside and out and still not know how to play a board game. But if you're able to do both, you're able to lean into and focus on and perfect your skills or at least try.
  • You'll be better for it in both regards.
  • And you move forward using all the skills at your fingertips, even the ones you've learned from playing games.

  • I don't feel any pressure to create content.
  • This is my full-time job, right? I don't have another job to go to.
  • I'm producing all of this content and honestly, if I could produce more, I would because I love what I do.
  • The category here or the criteria here is massively popular, really well-respected, solid Euro games that have been around for a while and stood the test of time and are known as just really, really good games.
  • No games do. It doesn't need all of the bling and everything else.
  • I think most people in life are affected by what's called seasonally adjusted disorder.
  • Entering is absolutely free. It doesn't cost you anything whatsoever.
  • The secret word this month is haggis.
  • All of my advertising revenue from all of my videos goes to charity.
  • I don't make any money out of the videos themselves on YouTube. People call me crazy. They would be right.
  • It's only 70 to go.
  • I have not. No. Not Not even heard of that one.
  • I would strongly recommend you just do it because you want to do it. Don't go out and spend £4,000 on a fancy camera, lights, and everything else and think 'Right, I'm going to be the next big channel and I'm going to get 50,000 subscribers in 6 months.'
  • One thing that really annoys me is when the games come out at retail like the same time or even before and they're cheaper.
  • I personally believe it is fundamentally, morally, and ethically wrong for me to sell a pre-production prototype copy of a game.
  • It's International Unplayed Games Day. And the date that I've chosen... is the 1st of July.
  • I have already got two of them on my channel, if not three, and I'm doing another one next Wednesday.

  • I've been pushing this video off for a long time now because every single time that I was going to do this video, I had like one or two more games in my collection that I needed to just get to.
  • I got to a point where I realized if I keep waiting for that one more game I have to finish, I'm never going to do this video.
  • These are games that you have to theoretically destroy components in order to play them.
  • I really like Sagata Artisans.
  • Rise of Queensdale is like Charter Stone, just better in my opinion.
  • But My City Rolling Ball is delightful.
  • I think this was excellent and I will always wonder which game is better depending on your experience of which one you've played first.
  • I've played My City more times than any other game, period.
  • Ticket to Ride Legacy was the first game since Penel Legacy season 1 that gave me the highs of what a legacy game can in a system that was familiar and yet really opened up and explored this whole board as you went through it and just continued to unlock things.
  • This is my favorite Legacy game experience.
  • It's one of the perfect legacy games for me.
  • It's so good. It's so good.

  • the nomination lists are more important than the awards because you can go out and just buy any of these and play them.
  • We're nominating them now, and as I always say, the nomination lists are more important than the awards because you can go out and just buy any of these and play them.
  • These are going to be games that are fantastic to teach to someone who is not necessarily part of our fantastic little world of games. Something to get them in the door, get them excited about board gaming, get them introduced to all these amazing things you can do on the tabletop now.
  • And so, we got together a group of 50 plus people, that's Dice Tower staff and the other reviewers, different reviewers, and we vote on the nominations, and so we're going to present them to you.
  • Well, too bad to each of those nominations because you have to go up against the other four. That is a tough slate.
  • if you enjoy heavy strategy games, you were eating well in 2024.
  • This is a category for games that play really well with two. It doesn't mean they are exclusively two, although that's usually what is nominated, but it's just a great game for two players.
  • This is something that for the last several, several years has become an increasingly large segment of the board gaming hobby.
  • Not only are those like pretty strong solo games, but they're also some of the games that were mentioned in top lists of last year. That shows where the category has come.
  • So, these are games that do something different. We see a lot of the same stuff, which isn't necessarily a bad thing because same can be good and comforting. But, something that does something unusual or different or feels fresh, here's some games that meet that category.
  • My goodness, you now have to ask every time you sit at the table, 'Wait, is this cooperative or competitive?' That's something that was unheard of, you know, a decade ago even.
  • I used to not really appreciate how good party games can be.
  • So, this is going to be just that implementation of the theme, really immersing you into this world and this setting, uh doing something cool, or maybe just showing you a different kind of light on a thing that you're familiar with.
  • I always find it odd how the new designer category often also every year seems to dominate best games of the year category, and I like that a lot.
  • Artwork is something that just walking by a table, you can convince me to play a game just by showing me a good box cover. And I think that it's something that can We talked about the theme, can really sell that, but it's that first entry point in the game, and can grab your attention.
  • Games are a total production, and what this category is about is saying, 'This is the most impressive full productions of a board game we've seen this year.'
  • Now, in this category, we have 10 um 10 nominees, and they kind of encompass the whole package here. You know, we're we're looking at the mechanisms, we're looking at the theme, we're looking at the artwork, just all of it. Which one brought its best to the table?
  • Games that are fantastic
  • Then our next one is Codenames, a game that really brought party games back into the light, especially word team party games.
  • This has sold a gazillion copies.
  • And that is Pandemic Legacy Season 1.
  • But this is the game. It wasn't the first legacy game, but it was definitely the one that people that kind of exploded and changed
  • changing the landscape.
  • Talk about a game that truly shook everything up.

  • This is very like tribal like morbid.
  • It's um it's Dark Souls King Arthur, the Arthurian legend.
  • this one is kind of like it's very like tribal like morbid.
  • But if we're looking at themes of negative like negative games that I just did not care about the theme
  • I typically don't buy them if I if I don't like the theme.
  • the way that they did the theme was was so uninspired.
  • Odelin is again a good one just because it's it's Diablo generic demon fantasy thing. I find that incredibly tired.
  • Vagrant song certainly unique. I don't call it bad, but it had a hard time ringing with me
  • I was actually kind of glad you decided to quit that one.
  • So, if we're looking at games that I think does CA uh combat one of the best I'm trying to think is I mean Osworn is definitely up there.
  • That's the highlight. I mean, this is also a boss battler, but it is a campaign. But each boss is unique. I love the way that it utilizes the battle flow system. The fact that you can use cards or dice.
  • Their dedication to the secret boss. I applaud. That they they did everything they could to keep it all a mystery.
  • But then on repeat, the the mystery is gone, but the combat is still still great.
  • Because that's all it is is boss fights. I think a game funny enough that does boss fights terribly is one we've already talked about Madara
  • Madara's boss fights are [ __ ] bullet sponges with 800 health
  • the AI itself when you're doing the mobs, that works relatively well for the various enemies that are in the game, and they do level up, which is nice. They get more challenging, but it kind of just boils down to more HP and more damage. It does. They still kind of run the exact same way, but they color code it so it's not just a hodgepodge of just enemies.
  • the inverted paradigm system is amazing.
  • And actually a good positive and probably a good negative for some is atto to KDM. It depends on how you like your boss fights.
  • Don't get me wrong, they're they're extremely similar. And it just kind of depends on how you want your boss fights. KDM does it. I'm not saying KDM is necessarily a negative, but in the sense that it's combat can literally boil down to I have a character that can crit on everything
  • It's too It's just way too clunky.
  • God, no. A green [ __ ] Who the hell goes off a D 100?
  • But yeah, folklore the affliction. This was the one had had a really cool world. I like the the fable element, the gothic horror stuff. I think the characters were unique. Um but man, fiddly as all hell.
  • Yeah. And I mean, they shot for the open world.
  • It would have just been better if it was if it was uh scenario based.
  • but he doesn't want to carry any of his [ __ ] to my house.
  • I want to see it. I want to see this game of his that he owns like everything for
  • I didn't ever bring this one up because I haven't touched it in years.
  • Yeah, I know. I know. You would think with how much [ __ ] he has and how much he doesn't touch it, you would that he would want to play it. I told him we could have three. We could get cuz you'd be in on it, but he doesn't want to carry it over to my house.

  • Pandemic Legacy season 1 was this phenomena like it like we've all played Pandemic for many of us, very much us included. Uh it was our gateway game into the hobby and now like what legacy game? What do you you're ripping up cards the gate?
  • it was it was cool, man. It was a whole event. Yeah, it really was massive because like you said, it'd be hard for something like that to happen again
  • But there was like one maybe two and that was kind of it. But you're also taking, right? So yeah, by Rob Davio. But you're also taking one of the most popular to this day games of all time, Pandemic. Yes. And then giving it this kind of treatment.
  • I also think they executed so well. And it's also insanely good. That's the thing. It's like it's not just like, oh this look at this like kind of gimmick that it's a legacy thing. Like no, it was really fun. So memorable
  • Uh number one is the Ark Nova. You probably knew this one was happening. Um Ark Nova won in 2021. Um, and uh, yeah, Arc Nova is so good.
  • Arc Nova is about running a zoo.
  • It's got this great kind of tableau engine building uh where you're going to be building enclosures, putting animals in them, which are, you know, the the different uh animals you're taking care of in your zoo.
  • And makes it um you know like you get more points through conservation efforts because again the track uh the appeal track has you know for every three spaces on the appeal track there's one conservation space. You are literally rewarded more heavily for doing conservation which I think is how it should be.
  • And that's the thing is like Ark Nova doesn't do anything new per se in terms like there's not like a new mechanic that no one's ever seen before. Sure. And I've always argued like you don't need to do anything new. Like you can just take things that already exist and put them into a really excellent package. And that's literally what Arcan Nova is.
  • Um, it's it's now number two. It wasn't number two recently, so it's very recently number two. Just passed up Peggandic Legacy. We'll see if it can catch Brass Birmingham.
  • Make sure to rate, talk in forums, upvote images, videos, all the different kind of stuff. Engage with BG because it really does change things like this, this list.
  • It is userdriven. It's like the hotness. It's like what's on the hotness? Whatever people are clicking on, BG doesn't choose any of that, right?

  • So, this is uh this is from the teens.
  • This is the worst round of I've ever done in the history of these kinds of games.
  • The problem is these aren't helping because it's just flavor text from Lord of the Rings.
  • I was like, Lord of the Rings doesn't have flavor text and I was like, oh, what would have a ton of flavor text is the card game, of course.
  • So, we each have a strike. Strike.
  • Gosh, man.
  • Yeah. So, what's what's our current score right now?

Overall sentiment (raw)

Pros
  • Novelty of legacy elements like opening boxes and applying stickers.
  • Sense of ownership and character connection through writing on cards.
  • Dynamic characters and party composition due to character changes.
  • Cities transforming and falling adds intrigue.
  • Prevents player downtime.
  • Quarantining offers a useful fallback.
  • The idea of the board evolving is cool.
  • Can have momentum when interesting.
  • Enjoyed seeing new events and ways to use them or lose.
  • The scale of the game is epic.
Cons
  • Fiddly sticker application.
  • Destroying cards feels morally incorrect.
  • The game can feel dry despite flavor.
  • Scarring mechanics can feel gamey and not heroic.
  • Losing a month has no flavor impact on the story.
  • Scenarios can only be played twice.
  • Losing grants more funding, winning grants unlockables, making reward systems feel potentially unbalanced.
  • Game can feel gamey due to self-balancing mechanics.
  • Epidemic card is punishing and can cause irreversible damage.
  • Variance in opening games can make them too easy or too hard.
  • Poor campaign pacing with a lull in the middle.
  • Abrupt and anticlimactic ending with score calculation.
  • Thematic incongruities and illogical narrative elements.
  • Lack of villains.
  • The 'search' mechanic is repetitive and not thematic.
  • Endgame twist of the soldier betraying the party feels bad.
  • Core Pandemic issues like the punishing epidemic remain.
  • Card quality on some emergent mechanics is not good.
Thematic elements
  • Saving the world from four diseases by discarding five cards of the same color while at a research center in your city.
Comparison games
  • Pandemic
  • Brass Birmingham
Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • card management — Players discard five cards of the same color while at a research center to cure diseases, with cards spread across players' hands.
  • character abilities — Characters have special abilities, some unique, that affect gameplay, such as building structures anywhere or taking from the discard pile.
  • City degeneration — Cities can degenerate, making travel in or out require discarding two cards, which is described as expensive.
  • Eradication — Eradicating a disease grants significant value, preventing nothing from happening when that disease is drawn.
  • legacy mechanics — The map evolves over 12 missions, with mechanics changing over time, including opening boxes, adding stickers, and destroying cards.
  • Objective Completion — In addition to curing diseases, players must complete other objectives each session.
  • Outbreaks — If a city exceeds three cubes, an outbreak occurs, spreading disease to surrounding cities and advancing the outbreak marker.
  • Player card draw modification — A story twist changes how player cards are drawn, which the reviewer found made drawing strictly worse.
  • Player deck depletion — Running out of cards in the player deck is one of the ways to lose the game.
  • Quarantining — Players can quarantine any city, even if it doesn't have cubes on it, providing a fallback option.
  • Scarring characters — Characters can be 'scarred' to avoid the infection step, resulting in a permanent downgrade. This can be chosen by the player.
  • Search mechanic — A mechanic involving going to certain areas, spending cards, and moving up a tracker, with a character ability to speed it up and an epidemic twist to move it back.
  • Sticker application — Stickers are placed on the board, rulebook, and character sheets to modify rules and components.
  • Team composition — The need for specific team compositions arises from objectives and character availability.

Quotes (from this video)
  • Seven years ago, before the real pandemic, four board gamers set out to finish this extremely highly rated cooperative legacy game. And now only two remain for its completion.
  • We're bad.
  • But we did it. From players switching out and dropping out, we finally finished it.
  • This video is not going to be a review.
  • It's the feeling of your board game physically evolving cuz legacy, right?
  • Doing that intentionally was a trick.
  • Moral is the point.
  • This had our group really curious to say the least.
  • It really did feel like that city fell and was like some sort of deserted wasteland.
  • Legacy does a good job of preventing that pandemic moment where you just sit around in a space and do nothing.
  • The fact that characters can die and then they get replaced by new characters you unlock or even old characters you just had sitting around. This all makes the party feel more dynamic.
  • The game just wasn't that interesting after a while.
  • It just doesn't really sit right.
  • Pandemic Legacy season 1 has really jumped the shark.
  • The endgame twist is that your best character, who is probably the soldier, betrays your party and leaves, so you can't use him.
  • The general dryness and epidemic mechanic make this game a far cry from a masterclass of design.
  • The Midame feels like such a slog.
  • The game is mega dry, but I'm surprised how there's many interesting puzzling things going on.
  • The board keeps evolving, so there's a lot more to Grock.
  • I was actually convinced I was saving the world kind of.
  • I still feel a sick thrill of uh the outbreak happening and getting to place more cubes.
  • Placing more cubes is fun.
  • It's painful Mr. Man.
  • I wonder if my enjoyment would have been higher if this game wasn't so hyped online.
  • Surely they've gotten better, right?
  • The US is burning.
  • We cannot win.
  • I actually feel like the pandemic maybe is not really for me because to this day I still feel a sick thrill of uh the outbreak happening and getting to place more cubes.
  • It's like a combo.
  • I'm withholding my personal score until the actual review because yeah, I'm still not sure how to feel about this.

  • Sticker scratching and component durability can be finicky, and sleeve-related handling may complicate play
