How this game feels to play
Description

Ra is an auction and set-collection game with an Ancient Egyptian theme. Each turn players are able to purchase lots of tiles with their bidding tiles (suns). Once a player has used up his or her suns, the other players continue until they do likewise, which may set up a situation with a single uncontested player bidding on tiles before the end of the round occurs. Tension builds because the round may end before all players have had a chance to win their three lots for the epoch. The various tiles either give immediate points, prevent negative points for not having certain types at the end of the round (epoch), or give points after the final round. The game lasts for three "epochs" (rounds). The game is easy to learn.

From the Box:
The game spans 1500 years of Egyptian history in less than an hour!
The players seek to expand their power and fame and there are many ways to accomplish this: Influencing Pharaohs, Building monuments, Farming on the Nile, Paying homage to the Gods, Advancing the technology and culture of the people. Ra is an auction and set collecting game where players may choose to take risks for great rewards or... And all this is for the glory of the Sun God Ra!

Quotes (from this video)
  • Pure dice chucking game where you throw dice into a bowl and try to create pairs.
  • It's basically pure luck; you can switch your brain off and just roll.
  • There was no card sharing because I actually thought that was the coolest part of Pandemic, and I thought that was a missed opportunity.
  • The cool scoring system that you might be familiar with, where only your best flight counts.
  • This is a smooth, family-friendly game.
  • Rules fit on a single page, which makes it a good introductory deck-building game.
  • It could be a great gateway for non-board gamers because of the IP tie-in.
  • Pattern Mandala is distinctively different from the original, yet wonderfully elegant.
  • I love, love, love this one.

Overall sentiment (raw)
positive
Pros
  • fast, tense bidding that rewards bluffing and risk management
  • accessible entry point for abstract strategy fans and casual players
  • low price point in bargain bins makes it easy to pick up
  • provides a light but satisfying strategic challenge without heavy setup
Cons
  • component quality is poor (cheap money, translucent tokens, questionable artwork)
  • endgame can feel anti-climactic if a dominant stack punishes late bids
  • monotone decision points can make sessions feel serial rather than interactive
  • board and money components may wear quickly with repeated use
Thematic elements
  • auction/bidding and bluffing within a quick, abstract strategy game
  • informal home gaming session around a center table, casual family play
  • casual, conversational review with personal anecdotes and practical tips
Comparison games
  • Skull and Roses
Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • auction bidding — players bid money to place their counters on numbered spaces; the auction round determines where counters are placed and who commits funds to prioritize positions, creating a tense, calculative push-pull that can flip who is advantaged
  • bluffing and psychology — players can feign desire for certain numbers, bluffing opponents into overbidding or misreading intent, which creates a social layer where hidden implications and observed behavior influence decisions rather than pure numerical arithmetic
  • center square / wildcard mechanics — wild cards modify the placement rules, allowing placements on certain numbers or providing special payoff conditions, injecting variability into each round and creating strategic pivots mid-game
  • payouts on wild cards — when a wild card is revealed, players receive payouts proportional to the number of counters currently on the board, up to a cap, which motivates aggressive investment and careful risk assessment
  • Token placement and area control — counters are placed on a board with a central structure of rings and a central 49-space, with the goal of forming a four-in-a-row pattern across rows, diagonals, or columns by careful placement of investments

Overall sentiment (raw)

Pros
  • Compact and portable — Ha fits easily into a small box or travel bag, making it ideal for social gatherings where space is limited and players may be moving between locations.
  • Extremely social with very large groups — the 3-to-17 player range opens up opportunities for big party games that are still manageably paced and fun, which is a notable strength for events, conventions, and casual gatherings.
  • Well-structured scoring that rewards partial success — unlike some party games where scoring collapses into a simple win/lose dichotomy, Ha incentivizes crafting clues that balance ambiguity and clarity to maximize points, driving ongoing engagement through multiple rounds.
  • Reduces in-jokes through deck prompts — by pinning clues to a deck of well-known films and personalities, players are less likely to rely on private references that exclude others, which helps maintain broad engagement and avoids alienation in mixed groups.
  • Loosely defined rules but clearly adaptable — the rule set remains permissive enough to let groups customize pacing and style, while still providing enough structure to prevent chaos and ensure everyone can participate.
Cons
  • No-turn format can tilt influence toward extroverted players — players who talk more or who take more initiative can dominate clue delivery and guessing, potentially reducing balance in mixed groups that include quieter participants.
  • Dependency on the deck's suitability — if the prompts do not align well with the audience's familiarity, players may struggle to generate engaging clues or may encounter references that some participants do not recognize, slowing the game down.
  • Availability concerns — the game's availability may vary by region, and for some players, obtaining a copy through distributors or retailers may be challenging, which can impede adoption as a go-to party title.
  • Thematic narrowness — because prompts focus on widely-known films and public figures, players with limited exposure to Western media or who are less familiar with mainstream pop culture might find the game less resonant or accessible.
Thematic elements
  • The core theme centers on pop culture recognition through cryptic clues. Players reference famous films and personalities, crafting clues that strike a balance between obliqueness and recognizability. The theme emphasizes crowd-pleasing knowledge of widely-known media rather than niche references, encouraging accessible play for diverse audiences.
  • Ha is framed as a light, social party game designed for informal gatherings, often in homes or at conventions, where friends and strangers come together to share a quick, convivial experience. The setting is deliberately low-stakes, focused on rapid interaction rather than deep immersion, with players taking on playful roles as clue-givers and guessers in a shared, upbeat mood.
  • Clue-giving as performance — players describe or act out hints within a one-minute window, aiming to steer guesses toward the intended answer without revealing too much. The experience relies on timing, creativity, and social interaction rather than complex strategic planning, producing a narrative of playful deduction and shared humor as clues unfold and guesses are tallied.
Comparison games
  • Dixit
  • Times Up
Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Deck-constrained prompts — A deck of cards provides prompts in the form of films and personalities. This constraint helps standardize the difficulty and keeps clues within a shared frame of reference, reducing the chance that players rely on private jokes or ultra-obscure references. It also adds a reusable structure that can be rotated or re-seeded by groups for variety.
  • Group-size dependent scoring cards — The game ships with scoring cards that adapt to a broad range of player counts (from three to seventeen players). These cards specify how many points a successful clue yields depending on how many players are present and how many guess correctly. This design enables scalable pacing and ensures that large groups remain competitive without letting the experience bog down into a lottery of luck.
  • No-turn structure with free clue selection — There are no formal turns where players wait for others; instead, each player can choose to contribute a clue when they feel ready. This promotes a flow that can feel spontaneous and energetic, but it also places emphasis on group management and moderation to ensure everyone has a fair chance to participate and that no single player dominates the pace.
  • Targeted vs. broad scoring — The scoring system is designed to land between too easy and too obscure. If everyone guesses, the points allotted are lower or zero, while if no one guesses, no points are earned. The sweet spot—achieving just the right level of ambiguity—drives strategic clue-crafting and encourages players to calibrate their clues to the overall group’s knowledge and engagement.
  • Timed clue description — A single player selects a clue by describing or acting out a film or personality within a strict one-minute timer. The clock creates a pressure-cacing rhythm that keeps the round moving and pushes players to balance detail with brevity. The mechanic rewards clarity and clever wording—enough to guide guesses without giving the answer away immediately.

Quotes (from this video)
  • It's a great little party game, actually.
  • The idea is fantastic.
  • This is a mashup of the games Dixit and Times Up.
  • There's no turns here.
  • I would recommend taking a look at it.
  • It's certainly a party game that's going to be added to my regular rotation of games.
  • Now, I think it's fair to say that this is a sort of mashup of the games Dixit and Times Up.
  • We've got that scoring, that great scoring from Dixit, where you don't want everyone to guess the right answer, but you don't want no one to guess it, so you go somewhere in the middle.
  • There's not much to it in terms of components or anything like that.

Quotes (from this video)
  • This is a two-player head-to-head game set in the world of Gatsby, kind of. And you are, it's kind of a tug-of-war over three different areas. It's very abstract.
  • Moonrise part is the sideboard with tiles that fill up and then they go to one of the players for victory points and then there's just more buildings.
  • I recommend it for anybody who plays the game a lot. Though, again, the game is sort of the kind of game you buy at Target.
  • This is a neat worker placement game played over two parts of the board on the moon and on the planet. You're trying to blast an asteroid coming.
  • the cursing was a little over the top and unnecessary. It didn't really bring anything to the table.
  • Star Trek Captain's Chair. Wow, what a game. Nine out of 10. This game takes Imperium, a deck building game, adds a Star Trek theme to it, and does a really good job in that regard.
  • Very mass market kind of racing game. You're playing out cards whether you're moving your own ships or your opponent's ships.
  • I came in at a six on this game. Ultimately, I did enjoy this as a trivia game. It's a marriage of trivia and blackjack, right?

Chairman of the Board - Ra video thumbnail

Overall sentiment (raw)
mixed
Pros
  • Innovative dice exhaustion mechanic adds meaningful decision-making and pacing
  • Core roll-and-write feel remains accessible and approachable
  • Push-your-luck elements on the Escape Track provide engaging risk-reward decisions
  • Prototype shows potential for map-driven replayability and future expansions
Cons
  • Threat balance can feel swingy or overly luck-dependent
  • Partial player elimination can reduce late-game engagement for trailing players
  • Prototype lacks variability; final product may rely on components and map configurations for replayability
  • Rules and turn flow could be streamlined for smoother play
Thematic elements
  • Risk-reward exploration and contract fulfillment under time pressure, with randomized threats
  • Island exploration with a grid-like map, beach spaces, and threats; players traverse the map to collect tokens and complete contracts
  • Procedural, card-driven threats integrated into a dice-driven traversal
Comparison games
  • Trails of Tuana
Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Action selection per round — Each round, players pick one of three actions: Explore, Research, or Rest (and possibly collect a rest token). Rest unexhausts dice, while Explore advances on the board and Research buys contracts.
  • Card-driven variability — Threat cards and contracts introduce variability, increasing tension and replay potential depending on the deck composition.
  • Dice exhaustion and refresh — Dice tokens start unexhausted; using a die exhausts it. To refresh, a player must pass through or touch a matching symbol on the map, which renews that die's usability and affects pacing.
  • End Game Bonuses — Escaping the island yields a bonus (e.g., 5 points for first, 3 for second); overspill of points from the Escape Track can accumulate up to a cap, and unused map spaces can incur penalties.
  • Escape track and end-game bonuses — Escaping the island yields a bonus (e.g., 5 points for first, 3 for second); overspill of points from the Escape Track can accumulate up to a cap, and unused map spaces can incur penalties.
  • Exploration-driven movement — Movement is determined by the rolled dice; players traverse the map with their explorer, cannot backtrack, and must manage dice tokens to continue exploring.
  • Research contracts and token economy — Tokens distributed on the map are cashed in via research cards for points; some tokens are rarer and more valuable than others.
  • Roll/Spin to Move — Movement is determined by the rolled dice; players traverse the map with their explorer, cannot backtrack, and must manage dice tokens to continue exploring.
  • Threat deck and resolution — At least one dice must be rolled to reveal a top threat card; threats yield points or penalties and influence end-game scoring.

  • Card drafting and hand management — Each player starts with six secret cards; players choose when to play or hold cards, replenishing to six after they pass.
  • Commodity-like scoring with multipliers — Card strength is determined by the number of matching symbols rolled, multiplied by the card's intrinsic value (e.g., strength 3 on a symbol with one die equals 3, etc.).
  • Compound Scoring — Card strength is determined by the number of matching symbols rolled, multiplied by the card's intrinsic value (e.g., strength 3 on a symbol with one die equals 3, etc.).
  • Dice Rolling — Roll seven dice and place them onto matching symbol spaces on the central board to determine available scoring for the round.
  • Dice rolling and symbol allocation — Roll seven dice and place them onto matching symbol spaces on the central board to determine available scoring for the round.
  • End Game Bonuses — Points from any cards remaining in a player's hand at the end of the game are added to the final score, incentivizing strategic savings.
  • End-game hand scoring — Points from any cards remaining in a player's hand at the end of the game are added to the final score, incentivizing strategic savings.
  • Push Your Luck — Players may push to play more cards to gain points but risk giving opponents more points; passing can reset the round’s momentum.
  • Push-your-luck / chicken tension — Players may push to play more cards to gain points but risk giving opponents more points; passing can reset the round’s momentum.
  • Simultaneous card reveal and scoring — Each player secretly selects a card from their hand and reveals it at the same time; score is calculated from the revealed cards and the round card.

  • penalty chips and bonuses — Penalty chips are awarded for skipped numbers; players may use a bonus chip to modify the perceived value of the top card by up to five points in either direction.

Quotes (from this video)
  • This is a shedding game and the defining feature of shedding is getting rid of all your cards before the others.
  • It's a trick-taking shedding game, you’re blending three different genres into a single play experience.
  • Vampire Queen is a climbing game for three to twelve players; it’s trick-taking, it’s shedding, and it’s climbing all at once.
  • The seven-trick scoring in Front Gherkin is the crown jewel for how you measure endgame value, and that choice shapes how players pace their risk.
  • Fool sits at that interesting intersection of bid, bluff, and penalty, where the loser gets punished for a misstep and the winner enjoys the lead again.
  • Wizard’s bidding and trick-taking dynamic creates a natural tension between prediction and execution, very much in the spirit of Skull King but with its own twist.
  • The history lesson here is that the East and West diverged in their design philosophies, and we now live with a delightful spectrum of games that sits between climbing, shedding, and trick-taking.
