Description

In Ark Nova, you will plan and design a modern, scientifically managed zoo. With the ultimate goal of owning the most successful zoological establishment, you will build enclosures, accommodate animals, and support conservation projects all over the world. Specialists and unique buildings will help you in achieving this goal.

Each player has a set of five action cards to manage their gameplay, and the power of an action is determined by the slot the card currently occupies. The cards in question are:

CARDS: Allows you to gain new zoo cards (animals, sponsors, and conservation project cards).
BUILD: Allows you to build standard or special enclosures, kiosks, and pavilions.
ANIMALS: Allows you to accommodate animals in your zoo.
ASSOCIATION: Allows your association workers to carry out different tasks.
SPONSORS: Allows you to play a sponsor card in your zoo or to raise money.

255 cards featuring animals, specialists, special enclosures, and conservation projects, each with a special ability, are at the heart of Ark Nova. Use them to increase the appeal and scientific reputation of your zoo and collect conservation points.

Quotes (from this video)
  • It's only a game.
  • Windmill Valley is a solid game from Bard & Dice, easy to teach and with nice table presence.
  • Black Forest was a standout session, potentially game of the year material.
  • Ezra and Nehemiah is mostly non-existent on theme, but it's Garfield, so I was curious to try it.
  • Ark Nova has satisfying core mechanics, but it is a long, heavy ride.
  • Setti is a solid but forgettable experience; it does the job but lacks a memorable hook.

Pros

  • Rich, non-controversial zoo theme that supports narrative play
  • High replayability via many maps, asymmetry, and card interactions
  • Strong two-player experience with a tightened playtime
  • Upgrading action cards creates a dynamic sense of progression
Cons
  • Steep learning curve and heavy rule set; first plays can be grueling
  • Long initial playtime, especially when learning and filming a playthrough
  • AP (analysis paralysis) potential due to many options and interactions
  • Mean/interactive cards can create tense dynamics; can be off-putting for some players
  • Randomness in card draws can slow progress unless players adapt
Thematic elements
  • Zoo conservation, biodiversity, and narrative storytelling within a Euro engine-building framework.
  • Zoo management in a modern city; constructing habitats, collecting animals, and educating the public.
  • Thematic, simulation-driven; emphasizes long-term planning, ecosystem balance, and storytelling through zoo development.

Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Action card drafting/activation — Players have a tableau of action cards; activating a card slides it along a track and shifts others, with later activations offering higher numbers.
  • Asymmetric boards / maps — Multiple boards provide different bonuses and challenge patterns, offering varied paths and replayability.
  • Endgame trigger by progress — The game ends when a player crosses a token threshold rather than a fixed round count, adding tension and urgency to late-game decisions.
  • Large deck with synergetic cards — A deck of over 200 unique cards provides recurring actions, icons, and chain effects that enable powerful combos when drawn and played in the right order.
  • Optional interactive cards (attack/pilfer) — A subset of cards can directly affect opponents (e.g., steal resources or hinder their plans); an optional variant can disable or minimize this interaction.
  • Reputation / association tracking — Tracks such as universities and continental affiliations grant bonuses and unlock further actions, shaping long-term strategy.
  • Tableau upgrading and middle-row access — Cards can be upgraded and certain middle-row cards become accessible, tying card upgrades to increases in available options.
  • Tile placement / hex-based tableau — Hexagonal tiles are placed on a personal board to build and upgrade the zoo layout; spatial planning drives access to actions and bonuses.

Quotes (from this video)
  • it's not one for people who don't like dice rolls because it'd be very easy to blame the dice for you for bad play but there's plenty of mitigation in Final Girl
  • Regicide is a very simple Cooperative or solo game that you can play and you can play it using just a standard deck of cards
  • the crew 2 takes the original crew and just gets rid of all of the awkward parts of it and makes it a better game with more replayability
  • Block by Block Uprising is a great game ... it makes a political statement a very blunt political statement and I kind of respect as honesty there
  • Pan Am is a network building aircraft game but you initially expect to be a bit like Ticket to Ride where you just try to put down planes and and you know get long chains of them but it has a Twist where you're actively trying to get in the way of Pan Am as it expands so that they buy your networks off you
  • unsettled is an excellent game it has some of the best writing of any game I've played
  • Roll Camera it's a hoot track it down if you can go into it knowing that what you get out of it is what you put in

  • The golden age of board games is effectively over.
  • Kickstarter didn't save the hobby from oblivion. It gutted it.
  • The next golden age won't be crowdfunded. It won't be online.
  • The next golden age will be created by people like you and me in spaces away from all the noise at tables where you'll be playing games with the people that you love.
  • Deluxe editions became the norm.
  • We stopped funding games themselves and we started funding promises.
  • The truth is, all gamers, you and I, have killed the industry.
  • If the game is good, I will play it.
