Description

On an uninhabited island in uncharted seas, explorers have found traces of a great civilization. Now you will lead an expedition to explore the island, find lost artifacts, and face fearsome guardians, all in a quest to learn the island's secrets.

Lost Ruins of Arnak combines deck-building and worker placement in a game of exploration, resource management, and discovery. In addition to traditional deck-builder effects, cards can also be used to place workers, and new worker actions become available as players explore the island. Some of these actions require resources instead of workers, so building a solid resource base will be essential. You are limited to only one action per turn, so make your choice carefully... what action will benefit you most now? And what can you afford to do later... assuming someone else doesn't take the action first!?

Decks are small, and randomness in the game is heavily mitigated by the wealth of tactical decisions offered on the game board. With a variety of worker actions, artifacts, and equipment cards, the set-up for each game will be unique, encouraging players to explore new strategies to meet the challenge.

Quotes (from this video)
  • All award shows including this one are just opinion pieces
  • Board games are constantly evolving it's one of the things I love about the hobby is game Games come out that do something different games come out that take an approach on something that's just a little unusual a little weird and you go huh why didn't someone think of this earlier
  • it's living proof that games that are pretty and come with a cosmetic sort of element don't have to be rubbish
  • They've taken a great board game one of the best board games out there and they have done a near perfect job of implementing it as an app and for me that is board game at Perfection
  • it took a genre I really really didn't care for and made me relook it and go okay maybe there's something here maybe there's something worth me looking at more games in this genre
  • just because a game's IP has been locked away because of lawyers and all that kind of carryon the mechanics can still be rebranded reorganized and repackaged into a way that can resonate that can work and that can still entertain

  • and if no one else likes that game but you like that game it's still a great game because that's how the hobby is
  • cute games are always the meanest
  • it's the experience that people have
  • i think this one is the most important category like i think this is to me what makes a game great because we introduce so many different games to so many different people i think if the if the experience at the table is memorable and it really sticks with somebody they'll come back they want to play more games and play that specific game
  • well i think my example is more skill based so my education example is actually furnace
  • because functionality it yes when it comes down to it is the game functional at its base
  • if it is it could it could potentially be a great game but who knows it can also still be a great game with a component oh yes yeah yeah again it's kind of the whole subjective intermingling of all the categories

Quotes (from this video)
  • The expansion takes the solo game from like an eight... up to a 10.
  • You have all that kind of good crunchy competitive mechanics but then whoop now we disappeared into this way crazy fantasy Indiana Jones.
  • It's actually a little bit more difficult with less players... you might get your butt kicked like the first couple of times.
  • Portals to alternate realities and there's like science fiction aliens and dinosaurs and snake people and Cthulhu's type monsters and you know zombies every I mean it's like everything in there.
  • I would rather play this solo than with players but I would still play with players.
  • I want one where I can kind of build and tweak decks all on my own don't worry about playing against other players and stuff and just you know throw them at different villains and see how they work.
  • They just need to straight up reprint that sucker.
  • It scratches that D&D itch like nothing else.
  • It just immerses you unlike anything that I've that I've played anywhere on this list or anywhere else.

  • Castle burgundy is a dice game you're rolling a cut of dice you'll be using the result to take different actions to expand your Province to send Goods off to different markets and all that sort of stuff you know typical themeless affair that Stephen Feld will always always offer you but that doesn't mean anything it's still a fantastic experience I still love playing castles of Burg today and is still a fascinating romp even if you do want to push that gun out of the window
  • it's a game by Jamie stigmar stonar games it's side yeah this game changed the landscape with their Kickstarter campaign it created its own unique Universe with some fantastic artwork and it's wrongly regarded as a war game it's the threat of war that is the more concerning thing in this game
  • it's a fine game but it's just not as good as everybody tells you that it is
  • Love Twilight Struggle it's a great two player only game there's a lot of debt fear it's not perfect there's a few problems with the way that the cards come in and out of the game and it can be long if you take your time and you're going to have to do that if you want to win so yeah Twilight Struggle we don't play this all the time even though I love the maybe we should play a little bit more yeah
  • Vlad sh's Rule books turn my brain into soup
  • it's a space themed reimagining of Terror mystica

Quotes (from this video)
  • The game builds from like the first round where you how many points do you score? Six. And to the last round, how many points did you score? 2004, right?
  • The artwork by Manny on those platforms and the production, the artwork, all of it's really cool. Really, really good.
  • This one takes the cake. And the big thing here is the variability.
  • This is effectively, in my opinion, one of the first player boards that introduced, at least to my knowledge, introduced that concept of having a bunch of stuff on your playerboard and then removing it throughout the game.
  • It made a game that wasn't really about player boards definitely a game about player boards.
  • The way that they designed this playerboard to accommodate all of the different uses of cards is actually kind of genius.
  • This playerboard serves as my guide to go through all of the important things you have to teach because the mechanisms for how you play the game, what you do in the structure of a round, not terribly difficult, but all of the different things you can do are on this board in all these sections.
  • It really makes a kind of more heavier game easier to understand because the way they presented all this information.
  • This playerboard is the reason I went to Ryan I said Ryan we should do a top 10 player boards This literally is the playerboard because when I open this thing and I see this playerboard, it just makes me want to play Revive.
  • Everything you're doing in the game, you are always always interacting with your playerboard in some fashion in a really satisfying fashion.
  • This for me, you know, and some people, you know, graphic design and illustrations uh are divisive. You know, a lot of people like some things the way they look, some people don't. This one to me, for me personally, this is what I want games to look like.
  • Sometimes the a game is terrible when what'
  • We have done it. We have compiled not just any top 10 list, but the top 10 player boards of all time.
  • The playerboard because when I open this thing and I see this playerboard, it just makes me want to play Revive.
  • It is one of the more colorful, rich looking um euros that we've had in quite some time and one of probably a reason why it's one of our favorites.
  • And I will always love and there are this is kind of summing up all of these because there are so many that we could have choose from, but I always love when you're sitting down at something and it feels like it's an inworld component.
  • Games can live or die based on how well their player boards are designed for sure.

Quotes (from this video)
  • Time Stories is a system to have adventures, and there are a ton of different expansions that let you have adventures in, um, you know, you know, ancient Greece or, uh, you know, the the Roaring 20s or in the future, all kinds of things.
  • Every time you play, you get a new adventure. And, um, it's absolutely brilliant. the best some of the best storytelling I've ever seen in board games because this game forces players to become the storytelling...
  • the original White Cycle, the I think it was 13 adventures in Time Stories is some of Jensen and my favorite adventuring gameplay we have ever seen and I highly recommend it...
  • It is constantly under attack from wave after wave of bad guys.
  • This is probably my most combat heavy game that I have talked about today and it's really saying something how good this is considering the combat is very dice roll to resolve which is something I normally don't like. But here the gameplay and the adventure uh and the replayability of the original Andor mission 3 had a really wonderful system...
  • one of my favorite cooperative games of all time. Although of all of Andor, it's the original box is still the best.
  • Runebound second edition, not third edition. Third edition is okay, but they made some big changes moving away from second edition. and second edition is where it's at.
  • what always pulled me in was the adventure of travel. I have to admit travel is often my least interesting element of of an adventure game unless they do something really interesting. And this game's travel system is brilliant.
  • you roll dice when you're going to move and all uh a bunch of different terrain types show up and every time you want to move it's a puzzle of right well with these dice what is going to be the way I travel through the world?
  • they're the coolest dice you've ever seen. Big and chunky. And then solving that puzzle.
  • the original uh Runebound Second Edition is absolutely phenomenal. one of the all-time greats uh for a true sense of adventures. We race against the clock to save a fantasy world and I love it to pieces and that would have been I believe uh my number four
  • for honorable mentions, the one that didn't make it on my mind that Richard point out was Dead Reckoning. I really like that one.
  • We just had an adventure, folks. The internet blew up on us.

Quotes (from this video)
  • I find that when I play games solo, I really enjoy having a reason to come back to them over and over again. And those campaigns are one of the best ways to get me to come back and play a game.
  • Almost every single concern I had with the original Sleeping Gods was fixed in Distant Skies.
  • As of this recording, I've yet to find a game that provides a better sandbox adventure.
  • I just love how this game makes you feel clever as you find ways to defeat multiple threats in one turn.
  • Although the game may look cute, the puzzles in the scenarios are no joke.
  • Each scenario takes less than 20 minutes, so it's easy to get to the table as a solo player.
  • Arkham Horror, the card game, is by far the best narrative driven campaign on this list.
  • So many scenarios, I chuckle to myself on how clever a mechanic they used or a thematic tying that worked so well.
  • With the revised boxes coming out now, it is easier than ever to pick this one up and give it a try.
  • All of a sudden, Awaken Realms designed Dragon Eclipse, and now my dreams have come true.
  • I cannot get enough of the puzzly and tactical combat, which is the backbone of this game.
  • When you have the embers of a forsaken star expansion for Zia Legends of a drift system, this game becomes an epitome of a campaign sandbox game.
  • The joy of leveling up your ship, running away from the scoundrel and racing the merchant for fame never gets old in a universe that's always changing in an unexpected ways.
  • With the theme Lord of the Rings, the first thing that comes to mind is working together to defeat a common goal. That is exactly what Lord of the Rings the card game is about.
  • I will never tire with finding synergies between different heroes or different cards and continuously appreciating the scenario design and how it challenges the players.

  • Anything that wins Spiel Dejars will go on to sell way more copies, especially in the family category if it gets that Spiel Dejars award on it, which they have to pay for. They have to pay to have that award put on there, which is how Spiel Dejares makes its money. But it will sell many, many copies of the game.

Quotes (from this video)
  • Through the Ages: A New Story of Civilization is the engine builder to end all engine builders.
  • In Twilight Struggle, one of the more interesting times in history is played out. And I love that each card is a real event that happened.
  • Gaia Project built on Terrammystica and perfected the form. It's the best one.
  • Gloom Haven: Jaws of the Lion has the best tutorial system I have ever seen in a game, and I think it legitimately creates new board gamers constantly because of the way they make it so approachable.
  • Each Spirit in Spirit Island can be played over and over as you learn how to master their abilities, and there are so much content in the box. It also just plays amazing solo.
  • Dune Imperium Uprising took Dune Imperium to a whole new level of scale and scope, and it's got them worms.
  • It's impossible to have a bad time playing Star Wars Rebellion, especially if you love Star Wars. Okay, mostly only if you love Star Wars, but it's really fun. It's Lord of the Rings in a box, and it's perfect.
  • For a solid like 6 years, Terraforming Mars was absolutely the king of the board game hobby. Unreal staying power.
  • Dune Imperium uses art based on the movies, but it doesn't feel at all like a movie tie-in cash grab.
  • The scale and epic stories that come out of Twilight Imperium fourth edition make it everlasting. Every time you play, you get a permanent memory and story. It's truly impressive.
  • The sheer amount of content in Gloom Haven and the card play makes this dungeon crawler a Eurogamer's delight.
  • Ark Nova takes Terraforming Mars' cardplay in Civilization's action card mechanisms and put it into a theme we're just way more interested in. just the absolute pinnacle of mashing up mechanisms into a masterpiece.
  • Pandemic Legacy Season 1 has deserved every single ounce of acclaim and accolades it's received over the years. It was an absolute phenomena when it came out.
  • I don't want to say anything nice about this game. I don't want to say anything nice about this game. I don't like this game though.
  • Fine. Fine.
  • Brass Birmingham is objectively a board game. Done. Easy. That was nice. Words that are written.
  • Brass rhymes with ass. Got him. You're done.
  • Brass Birmingham has one of the best examples of positive player interaction and a game I'd actually seek out to play for a player. Was that so hard?
  • So, that was one nice thing about every single game in the Board Game Geek top 100. Many games that we actually don't even really like, but there's always something nice to say. Exactly.
  • Just engage.
  • We had a lot of fun making it.
