Description

Wingspan is a competitive, medium-weight, card-driven, engine-building board game from Stonemaier Games. It's designed by Elizabeth Hargrave and features 180 birds illustrated by Natalia Rojas and Ana Maria Martinez.

You are bird enthusiasts—researchers, bird watchers, ornithologists, and collectors—seeking to discover and attract the best birds to your network of wildlife preserves. Each bird extends a chain of powerful combinations in one of your habitats (actions). These habitats focus on several key aspects of growth:

Gain food tokens via custom dice in a birdfeeder dice tower
Lay eggs using egg miniatures in a variety of colors
Draw from hundreds of unique bird cards and play them

The winner is the player with the most points after 4 rounds.

—description from the publisher

From the 7th printing on, the base game box includes Wingspan: Swift-Start Promo Pack.

  • Must have at least one nectar stored to be eligible for bonus points.
Thematic elements

Quotes (from this video)
  • And welcome to watch it played my name is rodney smith and in this video we're going to learn the one to five player oceana expansion for wingspan designed by elizabeth hargrave and published by stonemire games who helped sponsor this video.
  • First you'll shuffle the 95 new birds into your core game.
  • The new nectar resource which is special because it's considered a wild food.
  • Nectar itself cannot be used in the spending portion of this exchange.
  • At the very end of the game players will check to see who has the most nectar tokens in the spent nectar spaces of each of their habitats and you score each of these habitats separately.
  • These are flightless birds and anytime you have a bird power or bonus card that has a condition referring to wingspan you treat these wingless birds as wild.
  • Anytime you see a yellow background this is a game end effect and these will only activate once at the end of the fourth round.

  • pleasant game experience
  • heavier style game
  • more layers in complexity and strategy than Wingspan
  • unique and different art style
  • new world being built
Cons
  • more complex than Wingspan, making it more of a gamer's game
Thematic elements
  • dragons
  • caves
Comparison games
  • Wingspan
Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • action selection — the way that you take actions you'll spend a resource that is a coin and you'll be able to do a variety of different actions.
  • Engine Building — Engine building game is very interesting and probably my favorite part about this is the way that you take actions you'll spend a resource that is a coin and you'll be able to do a variety of different actions.
  • Resource Management — Spend a resource that is a coin and you'll be able to do a variety of different actions. My favorite part about this though is there are ways to get more coins there are reasons to spend your coins so you have less turns.
  • track movement — you'll move around this Guild track and every time you get or everything you pass or get to a point you'll collect the resource more interestingly enough place a cube onto the center board which will get you a variety of different abilities some game and scoring and things along those lines.

Quotes (from this video)
  • My list is different than your list and my list is the best 10 games of 2024.
  • This engine building game is very interesting and probably my favorite part about this is the way that you take actions, you'll spend a resource that is a coin and you'll be able to do a variety of different actions.
  • The art style is very unique and different that really invited me over the first few games we played over to the last few games we played.
  • There's eight different cities with different scoring conditions the way that the goals come out they're always going to be different.
  • The art in this game is probably the most gorgeous art of 2024 it's it's a gorgeous game each of the cards is so uniquely Illustrated the cover is fantastic this game is an art piece on your table.
  • The Crew produces that almost like every three four games in my opinion because at one point you're all going to have really crappy hands but you somehow predict the order of your crappy hands at one point you'll someone will draw card redraw cards and they'll draw two aces and the probability of that is not very likely but all of a sudden an ace comes up and it's just so fun.
  • It's poker but it's taking a simple concept well simple concept like poker and turning it into this like or turning it on its head and turning into a Cooperative game that people can get behind.
  • The first time you play it it's just a discovery game and you have to accept that you you won't get very far on the tracks.
  • The reason I think this is my number one is a little bit because of the surprise element surprise in the sense that you didn't expect it I didn't expect it to be as great as I knew it was going to be good but it ended up being fantastic and grade.
  • It tickles my logic brain which is always great and it's a little puzzle that I think everybody can kind of get behind.
