Description

Vantage is an open-world, co-operative adventure game for 1-6 players that features an entire planet to explore, with players communicating while scattered across the world. With nearly eight hundred interconnected locations on four hundred cards and over nine hundred other discoverable cards, the world is your sandbox.

You begin each game of Vantage on an intergalactic vessel heading towards an uncharted planet. After crashing far from your companions, you have complete freedom as to how you explore, discover, and interact with the planet. You view your location from a first-person perspective, and you can communicate with and support other players, but you are separated by vast distances, so only you can see your current location.

Vantage is not a campaign game, and it is completely self-contained with no expansions — just a few accessories like metal coins.

Quotes (from this video)
  • The one thing I've realized from playing on board game arena is that I'm out of practice on scoring games. So I would say to game developers, make sure scoring is streamlined and not too convoluted.
  • Musical immersion and satisfying feedback for interacting with the game. Fun game vs fun video game actions may not even have any actual utility, but they still feel good.
  • Don't forget to design catchup mechanisms. The way Mario Kart World weighs its items based on racer position is such an enjoyable simple catch-up mechanism.
  • Video games reward you for completing tough challenges with meaningful unlocks. Trek 12 is my favorite example of this.
  • Video games stay fresh through patches, updates, and community content.
  • Video games let you tailor the challenge to your comfort zone from casual mode to insane mode.
  • Video games excel at simultaneous engagement. Everyone's playing all the time. Imagine Mario Kart where each player races one at a time instead of all at the same time.
  • There are few things that are more intimidating than a 20 plus page rule book. Video games drop you into the action quickly and teach you as you play.
  • Board games often withhold feedback until the final score tally. Video games give you constant feedback loops. Mid-game checkpoints and milestones could help players better understand how they're doing.
  • I am much more of a tabletop game player than a digital game player. But I over the last few years, especially in researching Vantage, I researched a lot of video games.

Pros
  • Theme integrates well with core mechanics, creating intuitive decisions around shell placement.
  • Movement and timing create tension between speed and planning, with the back-of-queue rule encouraging strategic pacing.
  • Wave replenishment keeps the game state dynamic and reduces downtime as shells run out.
  • Lighthouse tiles add a targeted scoring objective that can be combined with shell types for varied strategies.
  • Component design and visual cues support the thematic feel and rule comprehension.
Cons
  • Rule density is high; new players may need a reference sheet or walkthrough to avoid early confusion.
  • Setup is somewhat fiddly due to multiple tile types, bags, and initial placements.
  • Final scoring requires careful tracking of multiple categories, which can be complex for casual players.
  • Two-player variant reduces tile counts per shape, potentially impacting balance and pacing.
Thematic elements
  • Theme centers on collecting and arranging seashells in a bag, with lighthouse tiles providing scoring objectives and a wave mechanic driving replenishment.
  • A beach walk from the shore to a lighthouse and back to beach chairs, with waves replenishing shells throughout the course of the game.
  • Instructional/tutorial
Comparison games
none
Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • End-game scoring by shell types — Score is calculated from six main shell types using tiers based on distinctive shapes and connected clusters, with bonuses for largest clusters and diverse types.
  • Gravity-based tile placement in bag — Tiles must fall toward the bottom of the bag with at least one edge touching bottom or another tile; tiles must align with a grid pattern and maintain open paths from the top to placement locations.
  • Lighthouse tile scoring and placement — Start of the game gives each player lighthouse tiles; at a specific lighthouse visit, players may place tiles onto their bag for scoring, with front-space handling allowing multiple tiles and back-space returning tiles to the box.
  • Movement on a U-shaped track — Players move their pawn along a beach path from the start via a series of footprint spaces, racing or pacing to the lighthouse and back, with the back-most player getting to move next.
  • Open-path constraint — There must be an open path from the top of the bag to the placement location; blocked spaces cannot be used for placement.
  • Tile drafting and placement onto a personal bag — After each move, players may take up to the number of tiles indicated by the landed footprint from the region and place them on their bag following specific placement rules.
  • Wave-replenishment mechanic — A wave marker travels along the track and triggers replenishment of shells in the central beach areas, ensuring a steady supply as the game progresses.

Quotes (from this video)
  • In Santael, players are beachgoers, taking a leisurely walk up and down the beach, collecting shells along the way, which they'll drop and arrange into their own collection bags.
  • One of the keys to scoring the most points is how you place your shells in your bag.
  • A good walk and a back full of shells.
  • To score the points on your lighthouse tiles, you need to place them in your bag.
  • There is no limit to how far you can move on a turn.
  • Shells always fall under gravity towards the bottom of the bag.
  • A shell can fit through any gap of any shape or size. It's only grids which are completely closed off which you can't place in.
  • Having placed this shell here, I've now blocked off these two grid spaces.

Quotes (from this video)
  • I am continually surprised by what I find. I know the world pretty well, but I can't possibly remember all that stuff. And so when I'm playing Vantage, I am continually surprised by what I find.
  • It is no longer just a two-player game. It is a one to two-player game. And if you already own Tokido Duo, you can just buy the solo mode that we have on our web store.
  • The solo mode is built on the Automa system—something that has become a signature for our games.
  • There's more power in positivity than there is in negativity. If you have a really good experience with a game, it's worth sharing it so others can discover it too.
  • Everything in the box is used at higher player counts; there are a few dice you might not use at low counts, but almost everything else sees use.
