Description

America in the 19th century: You are a rancher and repeatedly herd your cattle from Texas to Kansas City, where you send them off by train. This earns you money and victory points. Needless to say, each time you arrive in Kansas City, you want to have your most valuable cattle in tow. However, the "Great Western Trail" not only requires that you keep your herd in good shape, but also that you wisely use the various buildings along the trail. Also, it might be a good idea to hire capable staff: cowboys to improve your herd, craftsmen to build your very own buildings, or engineers for the important railroad line.

If you cleverly manage your herd and navigate the opportunities and pitfalls of Great Western Trail, you surely will gain the most victory points and win the game.

Quotes (from this video)
  • it's a circle and this is a very loosely defined thing there's no set in stone way to do a rondelle in a game but it's a circle
  • what a rondelle does in this particular implementation is it discourages me uh from taking the same action multiple times in a row i have to sort of like spin around the circle doing other things before i can do this one thing
  • it's not a hard and fast rule all this mechanic is not set in stone because with game design it's constantly evolving and we're constantly finding out uh new and better ways to have fun
  • you don't have to be uh you don't have to have a like a circle a geometric circle drawn on the board for a game to have a rondelle mechanic
  • it's neat all kinds of implementations all over the board

  • Consider me tantalized
  • Well make your own legally distinct klingons.
  • Bring on some type of giant space worms that feed on happiness and have an overly complicated judicial system.

Quotes (from this video)
  • The expansion takes the solo game from like an eight... up to a 10.
  • You have all that kind of good crunchy competitive mechanics but then whoop now we disappeared into this way crazy fantasy Indiana Jones.
  • It's actually a little bit more difficult with less players... you might get your butt kicked like the first couple of times.
  • Portals to alternate realities and there's like science fiction aliens and dinosaurs and snake people and Cthulhu's type monsters and you know zombies every I mean it's like everything in there.
  • I would rather play this solo than with players but I would still play with players.
  • I want one where I can kind of build and tweak decks all on my own don't worry about playing against other players and stuff and just you know throw them at different villains and see how they work.
  • They just need to straight up reprint that sucker.
  • It scratches that D&D itch like nothing else.
  • It just immerses you unlike anything that I've that I've played anywhere on this list or anywhere else.

  • Double-sided board tiles offer replayability
  • Includes the 'cowbell' mechanic for fun interaction
Cons
  • Excessively long playtime, especially in a two-player game
  • Complex iconography and tiny symbols on the board
  • Requires a large amount of table space
  • Helping farmers can feel punitive and thematically disconnected
  • The 'strength' mechanic and managing cows for it can be cumbersome
  • The anchor/city color matching for ship disc placement is poorly implemented graphic design
  • Lack of scaling for playtime in a two-player game
Thematic elements
  • Cattle drive to Argentina

Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • action selection — Players choose from a limited set of actions on their turn, often influenced by their current board state and hand of cards.
  • Deck Building — Players acquire new cow cards to improve their deck, cycling them through their hand and discard pile. Players must manage getting rid of duplicate cards or cards that don't fit their strategy.
  • End-Game Scoring Goals — Players can acquire 'gold cards' which provide end-game scoring opportunities based on specific conditions met during the game, such as having discs in certain city districts or collecting sets of farmers.
  • Hand Management — Players manage a hand of 'cow' cards, with the value of the hand impacting shipping options and scoring. Hand limits can be increased through game actions.
  • pickup and deliver — The core of the game involves moving cows to various destinations, ultimately shipping them via boats to European cities for points and money.
  • Resource Management — Players manage 'pesos' (money) and 'grain', which are used to pay for actions, hire workers, and fulfill certain game conditions.
  • Route Building — Players move their 'cow poke' along a trail, with the path and available buildings influencing their turn options. Shortcuts to cities are also a key element.
  • Set Collection — The game involves collecting diverse cow types and potentially achieving objectives related to specific farmers or city districts, which award points at the end of the game.
  • Strength (Cows) — New to this edition, some cow cards have a 'strength' value that can be used to help farmers plow fields, with higher strength requiring more cows from hand and incurring exhaustion cards.
  • Worker Placement — Players place their 'cow poke' or workers on various buildings on the board to take actions, acquire resources, or build their own private buildings.

Quotes (from this video)
  • This is Great Western Trail Argentina.
  • The first game takes a little while to play. I found I don't want to say I overstate it, but it got there, it is long.
  • We don't want to be here for three hours so what we're gonna do is just like speed run this sucker and go through as fast as possible.
  • The iconography is just awful. I don't know what they're thinking. The farmers on the board, it's awful. That's some of the worst graphic design I've seen in a game in my life.
  • It feels like the definition of overstays its welcome.
  • I think it's disrespectful of the amount of table space that people have because I don't think their tables are that big.
  • It feels like the game is fined and like here which is what we set up at the base game like here like ended here I don't know because it's not it doesn't feel like it's accelerating and as long as we're talking as long as it's Fister Fester we're talking about this guy the designer of the game and what he likes to do in his games this does something a lot like Maracaibo does where it's a it's a whole run down you're moving through but you can crawl but in Maracaibo there's a detriment to crawling and here there's not as much of and Boone Lake as well there's a disincentive to crawling but here take as much time as you want it doesn't really matter the only things you're really racing and it's less pronounced in a two-player game you're Racing for these stations but here I don't know if we care too much we're evenly matched
  • I think it's disrespectful for the amount of time time it takes which is a more important that's more the thing like if I was gonna play this more often yeah I would like do like an in-house thing where I would like a house rule yeah yeah I would maybe make my own little mat where it's like this is what we're doing and it's shorter.

Pros
  • Hazards are now a way to gain money and an engine-building aspect.
  • The new setting in Argentina is cool.
  • The karaku cow provides a cheap and simple way to get victory points early and adds flexibility.
  • The Gran Jaro mechanism and strength add interlocking mechanics and engine building.
  • The game is shorter, making timing more critical.
  • The fourth farmer track interweaves directly with buildings, adding complexity to placement.
  • The grain mechanism provides new options and interweaves with other mechanics.
  • The railway mechanism allows for shortening the loop journey and adding action efficiency.
  • The port mechanism adds a competitive race element and precise timing.
  • The introduction of tokens for drawing and discarding cards is useful.
Cons
  • Randomness of new ships arriving can change things up unexpectedly.
  • Exhaustion cards (negative points) are gained when using cows to help farmers.
  • The shorter game makes it critical to get an extra delivery.
  • It can be expensive to get points from the port mechanism.
  • You can't substitute money for grain at the port mechanism.
  • Relying on train shortcuts means not using certain buildings.
  • The game can feel very tight.
Thematic elements
  • Cattle history
  • Argentina
Comparison games
  • Great Western Trail (first edition)
  • Great Western Trail (second edition)
Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Employees — Hiring employees can provide strength icons and is a new way to build strength.
  • Grain — A new currency. Grain is needed to place a disc on a ship; if grain cannot be paid, profits from the delivery must be paid. Grain replaces the railway mechanism's interaction with deliveries. Grain is obtained efficiently from farmers on employees or inefficiently through auxiliary actions. Grain is critical for the port mechanism and cannot be substituted with money there.
  • Gran Jaro mechanism — Replaces hazards and bandits. Gran Jaro fill hazard tracks, providing a benefit for building on them. A new mechanism called 'strength' is introduced. Strength can be built by clearing icons on the player board, hiring employees with strength icons, or discarding cards. Using cows to help farmers gains exhaustion cards (negative points). Strength can be spent by landing on a farmer requiring it, or at a building that allows recruiting farmers as employees.
  • hazards — Hazards have turned into Gran Jaro and fill the role of hazards from the original game. Money is paid onto spaces, waiting for someone to clear the hazard and get the money. This increases the amount of money received from hazard tracks, allowing players to time their movement to clear hazards or new recruits.
  • ports — When a delivery is made to a boat, it moves to a port. When the marker passes the correct color anchor, the boat sails away, depositing the disc on the matching port. Players can pay grain to move their disc and gain money or points. Ports are first come, first serve, adding a competitive race element. Some farmer bonuses and buildings allow discs to be placed on ports without great cattle or timing.
  • Railway — The railway is no longer related to deliveries. It now offers a way to shorten the loop journey, allowing players to jump onto a train and go to Buenos Aires early, potentially skipping farmers and buildings. This provides action efficiency rather than money efficiency.
  • Ships — Replaced the Trail of destinations. Ships have a number and players choose a ship to place a disc on, with exceptions for the cheapest or most expensive ones. Ships sail away and randomly new ships come in, which can change things up in a random way.
  • solo mode — The game now includes a solo mode.
  • Strength — A new mechanism that works with Gran Jaro. Strength can be built by clearing icons on the player board, hiring employees, or discarding cards. Strength can be spent on farmers or at buildings to recruit them as employees, which adds an engine-building aspect.

Quotes (from this video)
  • We had to pick one of our orders so you may disagree with my uh with my order but that's all right we'll uh we'll get uh you'll hear them all one way or another yeah
  • I love that because then you can time your movement and in time where when you're going to clear clear up those hazards or those new recruits which we will talk about later
  • So it's sort of a continuation of what I know was a change between first and second edition Base Great Western Trail which was increasing the amount of money you get back from the band of tracks and Hazard tracks this one continues that even even further
  • I don't know if I love the fact that they come in randomly because you can you can get an unexpected shift in lots of expensive Ships coming at the start of the game or the cheapest Ships coming and that's going to change things up in a somewhat random way
  • This gives you new type of engine build
  • So it becomes this new it becomes this new thing you can do with high value cattle that's probably the first thing normally you would in the original game you'll just get high value cattle in hand and then just hang on to it until you reach the delivery point now there are other things you can do out here and you can spend that strength
  • You know the hazards and the the hazards and the bandits always felt like yeah now I've got excess money I can spend it and get this thing that's going to score me points but now there's an engine building side to it
  • Oh yes I really love that one because it links in with the way you build your deck it kind of adds these um little interlocking mechanism that wasn't there
  • I really like that I do I do like that as well give chance to have more these workers out
  • So I think that's a again that's it doesn't feel like that big of a change but it's a really clever way of using the rail to give you an action efficiency rather than a money efficiency and it's all all these things are about diversifying everything away from that single money currency
  • I do find that in the first and second edition I feel like I want to go to all buildings oh I need this one I need to get money I need to forward my try and so on but then I also need to go to Kansas City so at the start of the game you need to start the game I want to go to every building to kind of an engine build or get resources and then get kind of I thought okay next time next time I will shortcut I will just jump ahead three steps to Kansas City but the next time comes in more building a piece so that has not happened so this actually helps me to just jump straight ahead
  • For me this is the best thing that the new game adds and it it really makes the timing of things really precise I like it
  • So you can draw two and discard two especially when later on in the game you really need that really good stock or when you have really bad card you could still draw bad but you know you can just use that it's a good it's a good little lock hedge

  • Castle burgundy is a dice game you're rolling a cut of dice you'll be using the result to take different actions to expand your Province to send Goods off to different markets and all that sort of stuff you know typical themeless affair that Stephen Feld will always always offer you but that doesn't mean anything it's still a fantastic experience I still love playing castles of Burg today and is still a fascinating romp even if you do want to push that gun out of the window
  • it's a game by Jamie stigmar stonar games it's side yeah this game changed the landscape with their Kickstarter campaign it created its own unique Universe with some fantastic artwork and it's wrongly regarded as a war game it's the threat of war that is the more concerning thing in this game
  • it's a fine game but it's just not as good as everybody tells you that it is
  • Love Twilight Struggle it's a great two player only game there's a lot of debt fear it's not perfect there's a few problems with the way that the cards come in and out of the game and it can be long if you take your time and you're going to have to do that if you want to win so yeah Twilight Struggle we don't play this all the time even though I love the maybe we should play a little bit more yeah

  • it is completely like to to try and put you off if uh if you're not familiar and you're into Euro stuff it is completely dice chucking and there there is like there is Choice there is strategy and stuff into it but more than any of that there is Dice chucking there's rooll to move there's rooll to hit there's rooll to wound there's there's so much dice in this.
  • and so many things crop up in these um random cards that you're drawing whether it's the gear that you find whether it's those um events that um that come up or the the enemies that you tend to find that like you can you can see it happen even in like the the few episodes that I did of that playthrough like it's partly like just the human thing of wanting to recognize patterns but it comes up with these satisfying uh stories so often based on just a big pile of Randomness it is crazy that it can do that.
  • Shout out to bromstone is so good they had a big Kickstarter I think that was a couple of years ago now and it's projected for this year who knows if it will deliver.
