How this game feels to play
Description

In Pandemic, several virulent diseases have broken out simultaneously all over the world! The players are disease-fighting specialists whose mission is to treat disease hotspots while researching cures for each of four plagues before they get out of hand.

The game board depicts several major population centers on Earth. On each turn, a player can use up to four actions to travel between cities, treat infected populaces, discover a cure, or build a research station. A deck of cards provides the players with these abilities, but sprinkled throughout this deck are Epidemic! cards that accelerate and intensify the diseases' activity. A second, separate deck of cards controls the "normal" spread of the infections.

Taking a unique role within the team, players must plan their strategy to mesh with their specialists' strengths in order to conquer the diseases. For example, the Operations Expert can build research stations which are needed to find cures for the diseases and which allow for greater mobility between cities; the Scientist needs only four cards of a particular disease to cure it instead of the normal five—but the diseases are spreading quickly and time is running out. If one or more diseases spreads beyond recovery or if too much time elapses, the players all lose. If they cure the four diseases, they all win!

The 2013 edition of Pandemic includes two new characters—the Contingency Planner and the Quarantine Specialist—not available in earlier editions of the game.

Pandemic is the first game in the Pandemic series.

Quotes (from this video)
  • So, it's using a lot of like core basic math skills that I think are great for kids to learn, but I also think they're great for adults to continue to do a little bit.
  • I think it's good for our minds to try to go through that math and not always pull out our calculators.
  • One of the ways I think this game sneakily teaches geography is that you have to say the names of the cities a lot.
  • Wingspan was just such a beautifully done in in teaching about birds without a very sneakily.
  • Wingspan is really good at helping us notice the world that has always been around us but see it in a new way or see it more clearly.
  • So, Let's Go to Japan does a fantastic job of teaching about a specific country's geography and culture.
  • I can see it used in great ways for language arts but also for second language learning.
  • And, whenever the design of the card really ties the theme of that of of the card into like how tall of a tree you can make or how much soil you can put on it or the habitat that it belongs in, that helps it like that kind of anchors it in my memory a little bit more than than otherwise would happen.
  • The combination of math and um and flora and fauna and just my love of the game is what what made me pick it as not my number one.

Quotes (from this video)
  • This is very like tribal like morbid.
  • It's um it's Dark Souls King Arthur, the Arthurian legend.
  • this one is kind of like it's very like tribal like morbid.
  • But if we're looking at themes of negative like negative games that I just did not care about the theme
  • I typically don't buy them if I if I don't like the theme.
  • the way that they did the theme was was so uninspired.
  • Odelin is again a good one just because it's it's Diablo generic demon fantasy thing. I find that incredibly tired.
  • Vagrant song certainly unique. I don't call it bad, but it had a hard time ringing with me
  • I was actually kind of glad you decided to quit that one.
  • So, if we're looking at games that I think does CA uh combat one of the best I'm trying to think is I mean Osworn is definitely up there.
  • That's the highlight. I mean, this is also a boss battler, but it is a campaign. But each boss is unique. I love the way that it utilizes the battle flow system. The fact that you can use cards or dice.
  • Their dedication to the secret boss. I applaud. That they they did everything they could to keep it all a mystery.
  • But then on repeat, the the mystery is gone, but the combat is still still great.
  • Because that's all it is is boss fights. I think a game funny enough that does boss fights terribly is one we've already talked about Madara
  • Madara's boss fights are [ __ ] bullet sponges with 800 health
  • the AI itself when you're doing the mobs, that works relatively well for the various enemies that are in the game, and they do level up, which is nice. They get more challenging, but it kind of just boils down to more HP and more damage. It does. They still kind of run the exact same way, but they color code it so it's not just a hodgepodge of just enemies.
  • the inverted paradigm system is amazing.
  • And actually a good positive and probably a good negative for some is atto to KDM. It depends on how you like your boss fights.
  • Don't get me wrong, they're they're extremely similar. And it just kind of depends on how you want your boss fights. KDM does it. I'm not saying KDM is necessarily a negative, but in the sense that it's combat can literally boil down to I have a character that can crit on everything
  • It's too It's just way too clunky.
  • God, no. A green [ __ ] Who the hell goes off a D 100?
  • But yeah, folklore the affliction. This was the one had had a really cool world. I like the the fable element, the gothic horror stuff. I think the characters were unique. Um but man, fiddly as all hell.
  • Yeah. And I mean, they shot for the open world.
  • It would have just been better if it was if it was uh scenario based.
  • but he doesn't want to carry any of his [ __ ] to my house.
  • I want to see it. I want to see this game of his that he owns like everything for
  • I didn't ever bring this one up because I haven't touched it in years.
  • Yeah, I know. I know. You would think with how much [ __ ] he has and how much he doesn't touch it, you would that he would want to play it. I told him we could have three. We could get cuz you'd be in on it, but he doesn't want to carry it over to my house.

Quotes (from this video)
  • I love Cthulhu games. I think they're so much fun. I love that world. I've read I think I believe I've read every one of Lovecraft's stories.
  • But man, I love this game. It is so much fun. I love the dice, the way you use dice in this game and how you're leveling up, but it's also driving you insane.
  • So, there's a lot of replayability with these interactions between these monster boxes and the episodes. Really love Cthulhu: Death May Die. Brilliant game.
  • Um Arkham Horror the board game, the second edition, which I played, never really thrilled me. I liked it, I didn't love it.
  • my number one Cthulhu Mythos game of all time, Mansions of Madness second edition.
  • the second edition has an app. And the app is great cuz it manages all of that stuff.
  • It's a really really fun and creepy game.

Quotes (from this video)
  • It's a tough It's a lot of work. It's a lot of work, a lot of uh time, you know, a lot of upfront costs uh and things like that.
  • Because in my mind, crowdfunding was, hey, I'm a I'm a person and I had this dream and I want to get my game out. Not, hey, we're a successful company, but we're going to do this thing because, you know, uh we want to use your money to buy to to get our stuff and then we'll do it and you test the the waters for us.
  • They'd look at me like, 'Get another job. Get another job. You're you're in the wrong business, man. This sounds like a sucky business, right?'
  • I think the fact that you can market that way and you have a platform, it makes it easier.
  • the only marketing that there's two that I well three con that I would stand by conventions of course, I would go to retailers uh and do demos like you know just drive around hit a bunch of retailers do demo nights and things like that and and teach the game there and then three would be free copies to retailers to put in their library and push the game.
  • I just feel it really should be for the the dreamer that wants wants their game out there kind of thing.
  • the paid preview stuff just doesn't do that well.
  • I think we're all just kind of collectively numb to a lot of that.
  • I believe everyone I mean they have an audience. So, you know, even if they had a hundred people in their audience, but if you know me sending out review copy and I can get, you know, two three people buy it because of that, I feel like I've made you know I've made my my money back psychologically.
  • There's a novelty to that tactile experience of and and being around the table with other people.
  • I almost wonder actually is are board games going to continue to get more and more popular the further we go into AI tech, everyone being jacked into the matrix and that will be like this this um this haven for people to actually still have real human experiences with each other next to each other.
  • Dogs of War will be the the next uh big hit uh of that line.
  • It is great and it's an alien. It's a game about aliens, but also different take. They're not looking to conquer or anything. They're seeking knowledge.

Quotes (from this video)
  • So, let's see if we can come up with the definition together. Then we'll walk back through all sorts of iterations of dungeon crawling to see how the heck we got here.
  • The genre is getting stretched in all these new creative ways to become more of a vibe.
  • And again, if you think it's really boiled down to something simple like kill monsters, grab the loot, and level up. Well, doesn't that also describe the backsabbing party game Munchkin?
  • And pretty much every single dungeon crawler we've played here is not actually a dungeon crawler by some sense of the definition.
  • Fly, you fools.
  • Rather, it's better to make combat mechanics around, say, constantly responding enemies that goofully stand around and exist to die for the adventurer's profit.
  • So actually the right terminology for a lot of dungeon crawling would be dungeon exterminating.
  • So, since we established that dungeon crawling is now dungeon exterminating with a level of vibes that you feel once your character is equipping items, fighting, and looting, let's go into some other examples of dungeon crawler feel that I felt over the years.
  • And finally, number four, dungeon crawler vibe check. There's actually now zero nada puzzle solving, at least from the strict sense of performing a dedicated puzzle within the dungeon.
  • cooperative board gaming just didn't really exist back then.
  • These are the moments that cause the high fives and make you remember game night.
  • But since it was made with a skirmish mode in mind, its turn order doesn't feel like a dungeon crawler at all.
  • This might be the most dungeon crawlery in the truest sense.
  • Wow, this is actually a pretty good comparison.
  • It's kind of like Munchkin and being dungeon crawler inspired, but now you have the threat of dying and with more mechanics.
  • We've always felt like Gloom Haven fit perfectly into what gamers wanted out of Dn D to just be a murder hobo and to kill everything in their path.
  • It wasn't so much about looting or exploration, even though it technically had those things. Rather, it was about being euro puzzly.
  • And ironically, none of them have that typical high fantasy swords and armor and elves and magic theme.
  • Yeah, I was actually chocked by this.
  • It really feels like we've gone from the video game inspiration to board game form which came with a lot of limitations as dungeon crawling in a board game is inherently timeconuming and also very component consuming.
  • For me, I started this video with the goal of, okay, we're going to nail exactly what a dungeon crawler is. But yeah, still it's just it's just like vibes, right?
  • My final thoughts. So, what do I think is going on with this genre? Well, I think it's been massively overtaken by video game influence onto your board game night.
  • And that makes my life as a reviewer more complicated, but also a lot more fun.
  • It actually sounds a lot like what Hero Quest scenarios are trying to do at the end.
  • So, what do I play now? Like what what?
  • And then I can participate in some sort of conflict like probably combat. And then I can move and interact with some sort of map thing like rooms. I don't care about the puzzle element, and it doesn't always have to be a campaign.

  • Trek 12 is a roll and write game.
  • What's a roll and write game? If you'd asked me 2 weeks ago, which you did, I wouldn't have known what it was.
  • the way it works is that you roll some dice, and then you write a result on your board.
  • For every fixed line, so, for example, there's one through to five, you score the highest number plus the number of other members of the fixed line.
  • Or for the zones, you score the high the number that's that the zone represents. So, this is a four plus the number of other numbers in there.
  • The person with the most points wins.

  • Ark Nova doesn't do anything new per se in terms like there's not like a new mechanic that no one's ever seen before.
  • It's living and breathing and and things are shifting all the time based on who's playing what, who's clicking on what, how people rate games and stuff.
  • It's just most awesome resource we have for board
  • This is Pandemic Legacy season 1, which won in 2015.
  • Pandemic Legacy season 1 was this phenomena like it like we've all played Pandemic for many of us, very much us included. Uh it was our gateway game into the hobby and now like what legacy game? What do you you're ripping up cards the gate?
  • it was it was cool, man. It was a whole event. Yeah, it really was massive because like you said, it'd be hard for something like that to happen again
  • But there was like one maybe two and that was kind of it. But you're also taking, right? So yeah, by Rob Davio. But you're also taking one of the most popular to this day games of all time, Pandemic. Yes. And then giving it this kind of treatment.
  • I also think they executed so well. And it's also insanely good. That's the thing. It's like it's not just like, oh this look at this like kind of gimmick that it's a legacy thing. Like no, it was really fun. So memorable
  • Uh number one is the Ark Nova. You probably knew this one was happening. Um Ark Nova won in 2021. Um, and uh, yeah, Arc Nova is so good.
  • Arc Nova is about running a zoo.
  • It's got this great kind of tableau engine building uh where you're going to be building enclosures, putting animals in them, which are, you know, the the different uh animals you're taking care of in your zoo.
  • And makes it um you know like you get more points through conservation efforts because again the track uh the appeal track has you know for every three spaces on the appeal track there's one conservation space. You are literally rewarded more heavily for doing conservation which I think is how it should be.
  • And that's the thing is like Ark Nova doesn't do anything new per se in terms like there's not like a new mechanic that no one's ever seen before. Sure. And I've always argued like you don't need to do anything new. Like you can just take things that already exist and put them into a really excellent package. And that's literally what Arcan Nova is.
  • Um, it's it's now number two. It wasn't number two recently, so it's very recently number two. Just passed up Peggandic Legacy. We'll see if it can catch Brass Birmingham.
  • Make sure to rate, talk in forums, upvote images, videos, all the different kind of stuff. Engage with BG because it really does change things like this, this list.
  • It is userdriven. It's like the hotness. It's like what's on the hotness? Whatever people are clicking on, BG doesn't choose any of that, right?
  • It's just most awesome resource we have for board gaming. We love taking a look at like the data to see like what you know what has captured people's interest

  • Offers a lot of variety with expansions

Quotes (from this video)
  • I do not know what happened. My computer crashed when I ended the stream and now the stream isn't there.
  • So, yeah, pandemic. It's one of the best co-ops, one of the best games still, after all of these years.
  • There's going to be diseases spreading across the world. We need to travel across the world as these different uh people that sort out diseases from the CDC in Atlanta.
  • In normal Pandemic, the way that we do that is by gathering our hands of cards, uh having five cards of the same color, and being in a research station and you cure a disease.
  • And in the lab, it's not that simple because we now have the lab where we actually have to do a load of steps to find the cure for the diseases before it actually goes through, but we need fewer cards to actually finish making the disease.
  • The troubleshooter can have a little peek at the infection deck and see what might be coming and can do direct flights without needing to discard the card as usual.
  • The medic removes more cubes of diseases when treating them, and automatically removes cubes of cured diseases from the city they're in, and prevents them from being placed there. Hugely powerful.
  • You win if you cure all four diseases.
  • So, we've got the card for Bogota. Bogota, first stop is in Bogota. It's not very far away, is it, to fly over there?
  • It's a bit of a shame to leave it at three cuz we could be doubling it.
  • So, the troubleshooter. We've still got improved sanitation in effect, so should remove these from Cairo.
  • This is the danger spot for an outbreak now. So, we're probably going to have to discard something.
  • The operations expert could fly over to Lima and get close to Buenos Aires.
  • The logistics of putting these bits in and getting the cubes onto the cards that they needed and like the the testing can really help you pull back a city that's about to really fail. It's so good. I love this expansion.
  • Pandemic: The Cure is amazing. I did a play through on that once, but I'd love to do that again. That's really fast dice based Pandemic.
  • It's like Simon Funky Arkham Horror kind of. With a lot of differences, but it's from one of the designers of Arkham Horror second edition, Richard Launius.

  • The scale of the game is epic.
Cons
  • Fiddly sticker application.

  • The game can feel dry despite flavor.
  • Scarring mechanics can feel gamey and not heroic.
  • Losing a month has no flavor impact on the story.
  • Scenarios can only be played twice.
  • Losing grants more funding, winning grants unlockables, making reward systems feel potentially unbalanced.
  • Game can feel gamey due to self-balancing mechanics.
  • Epidemic card is punishing and can cause irreversible damage.
  • Variance in opening games can make them too easy or too hard.
  • Poor campaign pacing with a lull in the middle.
  • Abrupt and anticlimactic ending with score calculation.
  • Thematic incongruities and illogical narrative elements.
  • Lack of villains.
  • The 'search' mechanic is repetitive and not thematic.
  • Endgame twist of the soldier betraying the party feels bad.
  • Core Pandemic issues like the punishing epidemic remain.

Thematic elements
  • Saving the world from four diseases by discarding five cards of the same color while at a research center in your city.
Comparison games

  • Brass Birmingham
Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • card management — Players discard five cards of the same color while at a research center to cure diseases, with cards spread across players' hands.
  • character abilities — Characters have special abilities, some unique, that affect gameplay, such as building structures anywhere or taking from the discard pile.
  • City degeneration — Cities can degenerate, making travel in or out require discarding two cards, which is described as expensive.
  • Eradication — Eradicating a disease grants significant value, preventing nothing from happening when that disease is drawn.
  • legacy mechanics — The map evolves over 12 missions, with mechanics changing over time, including opening boxes, adding stickers, and destroying cards.
  • Objective Completion — In addition to curing diseases, players must complete other objectives each session.
  • Outbreaks — If a city exceeds three cubes, an outbreak occurs, spreading disease to surrounding cities and advancing the outbreak marker.
  • Player card draw modification — A story twist changes how player cards are drawn, which the reviewer found made drawing strictly worse.
  • Player deck depletion — Running out of cards in the player deck is one of the ways to lose the game.
  • Quarantining — Players can quarantine any city, even if it doesn't have cubes on it, providing a fallback option.
  • Scarring characters — Characters can be 'scarred' to avoid the infection step, resulting in a permanent downgrade. This can be chosen by the player.
  • Search mechanic — A mechanic involving going to certain areas, spending cards, and moving up a tracker, with a character ability to speed it up and an epidemic twist to move it back.
  • Sticker application — Stickers are placed on the board, rulebook, and character sheets to modify rules and components.
  • Team composition — The need for specific team compositions arises from objectives and character availability.

Quotes (from this video)
  • Seven years ago, before the real pandemic, four board gamers set out to finish this extremely highly rated cooperative legacy game. And now only two remain for its completion.
  • We're bad.
  • But we did it. From players switching out and dropping out, we finally finished it.
  • This video is not going to be a review.
  • It's the feeling of your board game physically evolving cuz legacy, right?
  • Doing that intentionally was a trick.
  • Moral is the point.
  • This had our group really curious to say the least.
  • It really did feel like that city fell and was like some sort of deserted wasteland.
  • Legacy does a good job of preventing that pandemic moment where you just sit around in a space and do nothing.
  • The fact that characters can die and then they get replaced by new characters you unlock or even old characters you just had sitting around. This all makes the party feel more dynamic.
  • The game just wasn't that interesting after a while.
  • It just doesn't really sit right.
  • Pandemic Legacy season 1 has really jumped the shark.
  • The endgame twist is that your best character, who is probably the soldier, betrays your party and leaves, so you can't use him.
  • The general dryness and epidemic mechanic make this game a far cry from a masterclass of design.
  • The Midame feels like such a slog.
  • The game is mega dry, but I'm surprised how there's many interesting puzzling things going on.
  • The board keeps evolving, so there's a lot more to Grock.
  • I was actually convinced I was saving the world kind of.
  • I still feel a sick thrill of uh the outbreak happening and getting to place more cubes.
  • Placing more cubes is fun.
  • It's painful Mr. Man.
  • I wonder if my enjoyment would have been higher if this game wasn't so hyped online.
  • Surely they've gotten better, right?
  • The US is burning.
  • We cannot win.
  • I actually feel like the pandemic maybe is not really for me because to this day I still feel a sick thrill of uh the outbreak happening and getting to place more cubes.
